The performance of a number of existing dynamic subgrid-scale(SGS) models is evaluated in large-eddy simulations(LES) of two prototype transitional and turbulent shear flows, a planar jet and a channel flow. The dynamic SGS models applied include the dynamic Smagorinsky model(DSM);Germano et al. 1991, Lully 1992), the dynamic tow-component model(DTM; Akhavan et al. 2000), the dynamic mixed model(DMM;Zang et al, 1993). and the dynamic two-parameter model(DTPM; Salvetti & Banerjee 1995). The results are compared with those for DNS for their evaluation. The LES results demonstrate the superior performance of DTM with use of a sharp cutoff filter and DMM with use of a box filter, as compared to their respect counterpart DSM, in predicting the mean statistics, spectra and large-scale structure of the flow, Such features of DTM and DMM derive from the construction of the models in which tow separate terms are included to represent the SGS interactions; a Smagorinsky edd-viscosity term to account for the non-local interactions, and a local-interaction term to account for the nonlinear dynamics between the resolved and subgrid scales in the vicinity of the LES cutoff. As well, overall the SGS models using a sharp cutoff filter are more successful than those using a box filter in capturing the statistics and structure of the flow. Finally, DTPM is found to be compatible or inferior to DMM.
Leading edge statistics are obtained by direct numerical simulation(DNS) of freely propagating incompressible and stagnating compressible turbulent premixed flames. Conditional averages of velocities in terms of reaction progress variable, c, and local flame surface density, ${\sum}^{\prime}_f$, are defined and compared through the flame brush. It holds asymptotically that $<u>_f=<S_d>_f$ and $<u>_u-<u>_b=D_t/L_w$ with the characteristic length scale of $\bar{c}$ variation, $L_w$. It also holds that $<u>_b=<u>_f$ for a freely propagating flame under no mean strain rate. The turbulent burning velocity, $S_T$, is determined by the conditional statistics at the leading edge under large activation energy.
The present study aims to generate turbulent inflow data to more accurately represent the turbulent flow around a square cylinder when the inflow turbulence level is significant. The modified random flow generation (RFG) technique in conjunction with a previously developed LES code is successfully adopted into a finite element based fluid flow solver to generate the required inflow turbulence boundary conditions for the three-dimensional (3-D) LES computations of transitional turbulent flow around a square cylinder at Reynolds number of 22,000. The near wall region is modelled without using wall approximate conditions and a wall damping coefficient is introduced into the calculation of sub-grid length scale in the boundary layer of the cylinder wall. The numerical results obtained from simulations are compared with each other and with the experimental data for different inflow turbulence boundary conditions in order to discuss the issues such as the synthetic inflow turbulence effects on the 3-D transitional flow behaviour in the near wake and the free shear layer, the basic mechanism by which stream turbulence interacts with the mean flow over the cylinder body and the prediction of integral flow parameters. The comparison among the LES results with and without inflow turbulence and the experimental data emphasizes that the turbulent inflow data generated by the present RFG technique for the LES computation can be a viable approach in accurately predicting the effects of inflow turbulence on the near wake turbulent flow characteristics around a bluff body.
This study represents three-dimensional turbulent flow characteristics around an axial fan measured at the operating point ${\varphi}=0.32$, which is equivalent to the maximum flowrate region, by using three-dimensional fiber-optic type LDA system. This LDA system is composed of a 5 W Argon-ion laser, two optics in back-scatter mode, three BSA's, a PC, and a three-dimensional automatic traversing system. A kind of paraffin fog is used for laser particles in this study. Mean velocity profiles around an axial fan along the downstream radial distance show that the streamwise and the tangential components exist as a predominant velocity and have the maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.8, while the radial component has a small scale distribution and its flow direction is inward except a part of blade tip. The turbulent intensity profiles show that the radial component exists the most greatly. And also the turbulent kinetic energy shows about 60% as a maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.9. Moreover, the Reynolds shear stresses do not exist at upstream flow, but the streamwise and the radial components of them show about 20% as a maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.9 at downstream flow.

The experimental study is carried out to identify the combustion generated noise mechanism in free turbulent jet diffusion flames. Axial mean fluctuating velocities in cold and reacting flow fields were measured using hot-wire anemometer and LDv.The overall sound pressure level and their spectral distribution in far field with and without combustion were also measured in an anechoic chamber. The axial mean velocity is 10-25% faster and turbulent intensities are about 10 to 15% smaller near active reacting zone than those in nonreacting flow fields. And sound pressure level is about 10-20% higher in reacting flow fields. It is also shown that the spectra of the combustion noise has lower frequency characteristics over a broadband spectrum. These results indicate that the combustion noise characteristics in jet diffusion flames are dominated by energy containing large scale eddies and the combusting flow field itself. Scaling laws correlating the gas velocity and heat of combustion show that the acoustic power of the combustion noise is linearly proportional to the 3.8th power of the mean axial velocity rather than 8th power in nonreacting flow fields, and the SPL increases linearly with logarithmic 1/2th power of the heat of combustion.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from smooth to rough surface is analyzed to examine spatially developing flow characteristics. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods with a streamwise pitch of ${\lambda}=8k$ ($=12{\theta}_{in}$), and the roughness height is $k=15{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the inlet momentum thickness. The step change is introduced $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. For the first time, full images from the DNS data with the step change from the smooth to rough walls is present to get some idea of the geometry of turbulent coherent structures over rough wall, especially focusing on their existence and partial dynamics over the rough wall. The results show predominance of hairpin vortices over the rough wall and their spanwise scale growth mechanism by merging.

Configuration of the inlet transition square duct (hereinafter referred to as "transition duct") for heat recovery steam generator (hereinafter referred to as "HRSG") in combined cycle power plant is limited by the construction type of HRSG and plant site condition. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a variation in turbulent flow pattern by roof slop angle change of transition duct for horizontal HRSG, which is influencing heat flux in heat transfer structure to the finned tube bank. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applied to predict turbulent flow pattern and comparisons are made to 1/12th scale cold model test data for verification. Re-normalization group theory (RNG) based k-$\epsilon$ turbulent model, which improves the accuracy for rapidly strained flow and swirling flow in comparison with standard k-$\epsilon$ model, is used for the results cited in this study. To reduce the amount of computer resources required for modeling the finned tube bank, a porous media model is used.

GASFLOW-MPI is a widely used scalable computational fluid dynamics numerical tool to simulate the fluid turbulence behavior, combustion dynamics, and other related thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear power plant containment. An efficient scalable linear solver for the large-scale pressure equation is one of the key issues to ensure the computational efficiency of GASFLOW-MPI. Several advanced Krylov subspace methods and scalable preconditioning methods are compared and analyzed to improve the computational performance. With the help of the powerful computational capability, the large eddy simulation turbulent model is used to resolve more detailed turbulent behaviors. A backward-facing step flow is performed to study the free shear layer, the recirculation region, and the boundary layer, which is widespread in many scientific and engineering applications. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data in the literature and the direct numerical simulation results by GASFLOW-MPI. Both time-averaged velocity profile and turbulent intensity are well consistent with the experimental data and direct numerical simulation result. Furthermore, the frequency spectrum is presented and a -5/3 energy decay is observed for a wide range of frequencies, satisfying the turbulent energy spectrum theory. Parallel scaling tests are also implemented on the KIT/IKET cluster and a linear scaling is realized for GASFLOW-MPI.

The mixing length theory is extended to close the momentum queations for two-phase turbulent flow at a first-order closure level. It is assumed that the mass fraction of the particles is of the order of unity, that the particle size is so small that the particles are fully suspended is the primary fluid, and that the relaxation time scale of the particles is of the same order as the time scale of the energy containing eddies so that the suspended particles are responsive to the fluctuating turbulent field. The bulk motion of the particles is treated as a secondary fluid with its own coefficient of momentum transport. The proposed closure is uniformly destributed acress the pipe section. Predicted velocity profiles and the friction factors are in good agreement with avaiable experimental data.
In the present study, we perform LES of turbulent flow and temperature fields in a circular impinging jet at Re=5000 for two cases of H/D=2 and 6 (H denotes the distance between the jet exit and flat plate, and D does the diameter of the jet exit). In the case of H/D=2, the regular vortical structures observed in free jet do not exist because of the smaller distance than the potential core. The Nusselt number on the wall is largest at $r/D{\cong}10.67$ where vortex rings Impinge. At $r/D{\cong}1.5{\~}2.0$, the vortex rings induce the secondary vortices, resulting in a secondary peak in the Nusselt number there. In the case of H/D=6, the vortex rings change into three-dimensional vortical structures and the small-scale vortices impinge on the flat plate. The increase of turbulent intensity due to small-scale vortices results in the largest Nusselt number at the stagnation point.
