  • This paper proposes an optimum design problem of structural and control systems. taking a 3-D truss structure as an example. The structure is supposed to be subjected to initial static loads and time-varying disturbances. The structure is controlled by a state feedback $H_{\infty}$ controller to suppress the effect of the disturbances. The design variables are the cross sectional areas of truss members. The structural objective function is the structural weight. As the control objective, we consider two types of performance indices. The first function represents the effect of the initial loads. The second one is the norm of the feedback gain. These objective functions are in conflict with each other. Then, first, two control objective functions are transformed into one control objective by the weighting method. Next, the structural objective is treated as the constraint. By introducing the second control objective which considers the magnitude of the feedback gain, we can per limn the design which is robust in modeling errors.

  • A strategy of the optimal shape design with FEA(Finite Element Analysis) for 2-D structure is proposed by comparing subproblem approximation method with first order approximation method. A cantilever beam with two different loading conditions, a concentrated load and an evenly distribute load, and truss structure with a concentrated loading condition are implemented to optimize the shape. It gives a good design strategy on the optimal truss structure as well as the optimal cantilever beam shape. It is found that the convergence is quickly finished with the iteration number below ten. Optimized shapes of cantilever beam and truss structure are shown with stress contour plot by the results of the subproblem approximation method and the first order approximation methd.

  • A truss is a structure in which the members are connected and arranged such that they are primarily subjected to axial loading. A truss has the advantage that it can be used for a longer span because the structure distributes the applied force to its members well, and the load is transmitted only in the axial direction of the members. Trusses manufactured using timber have more advantages than those made of other materials. In this study, the properties of parallel chord trusses composed of timber chord and steel-web members were evaluated. We constructed truss specimens with various lengths by using upper and lower chords of 2 × 4 inch spruce-pine-fir lumber and steel-web members manufactured by S and P companies. The specimens were tested in accordance with KS F 2150. The test results showed that the load at the deflection limit and the deflection limit itself increased from L/180 to L/360 regardless of the length of the specimens. For specimens of the same length, the load at the deflection limit increased as the height of the parallel timber chord truss specimens increased from 200 to 300 mm. Successive installations of the steel-web members (SST) showed almost 2 times the load at each deflection limit compared to that of SAT specimens (alternate installation of the steel-web members). When comparing the three load-deflection limits in terms of the manufacturer of the steel-web members, the load at each deflection limit for SST specimens was higher than that for PST specimens.

  • In this paper, a damage detection method using mode shapes of truss structures is presented. The theory is formulated based on the changes in the modal strain energy in a truss type structures due to damage. To examine the feasibility, the theory is applied to an experimental data of a 1:6 scale model of a typical hexagonal truss structure. The experiment consists of 17 damage scenarios subjected to three different types of damage. The damage evaluation results show that the proposed method detects successfully damage in truss elements and also show that the performance of proposed method can be significantly impacted by the noise in the measurement data for small damage.

  • Topology optimization of steel and concrete composite based on truss-like material model is studied in this paper. First, the initial design domain is filled with concrete, and the steel is distributed in it. The problem of topology optimization is to minimize the volume of steel material and solved by full stress method. Then the optimized steel and concrete composite truss-like continuum is obtained. Finally, the distribution of steel material is determined based on the optimized truss-like continuum. Several numerical results indicate the numerical instability and rough boundary are settled. And more details of manufacture and construction can be presented based on the truss-like material model. Hence, the truss-like material model of steel and concrete is efficient to establish the distribution of steel material in concrete.

  • There is a critically structural problem of scaffolding system when one of scaffold columns is remove to be used as a gangway for their temporary office in the structure before finishing all such as an apartment or office building. This is not used to checking to structurally checking at a construction site. This study is to find out which system at a site will be more effective and low-cost-high effectiveness of aluminum ladder, timber ladder, ${\phi}$1/2 inch steel pipe truss with a type of concave, convex warren truss ladders. Theses are structurally tested with horizontal set as a truss type with 1.8 meter long. Concentrated load has been loaded at the upper center of the system and checked its strain at the bottom center, using aluminum-use strain gage and steel-use gauge have been attached concave warren truss with diameter 1/2 inch has 14% stronger than convex truss. Convex truss has almost same strength as an aluminum ladder truss, it is found out.

  • This paper presents a robotic foot mechanism based on truss structure for walking robots and analyzes its effectiveness for compliant walking. The specified foot mechanism has been modeled by observing the structure and behavior of human foot. The frame of bone used in the human foot is considered as a truss, and the ligaments of the human foot are represented as a simple stiffness element. So such a robotic foot has an advantage to moderate the impact of foot when a walking robot takes a step. As a result, it is practically expected that the proposed robotic foot mechanism can contribute to reduce the physical fatigue of walking robots.

  • The primary objective of this paper is to grasp characteristics of unit system, for the stabilization of stablized truss structure that is an assemblage of unit system by prestress. This unit system is composed of a central post and eight cables, and is connected by hinge joints, and stabilized by the self-equilibrated stress system. As this unit structures itself is a statically closed and stabilized system individually, it can be employed to assemble a structure with a variety of configuration. In this paper, for the stabilization of truss structure stabilized by cable tension, it is proposed the self-equilibrated axial mode equation and the range of the various geometrical parameter about unit system.

  • This work presents a study on development of a practical and quantitative technique for assessment of the healthy state of a structure by piezoelectric impedance-based technique associated with longitudinal wave propagation measuring method. A truss structure embedded with piezoelectric patches is investigated for a fundamental study on estimation of the looseness of bolts in the joint. In order to evaluate the minute mechanical impedance change due to loosening bolt, a harmonic longitudinal elastic wave is applied to the structure by a pair of PZT patches and their electric impedance is measured simultaneously. According to the experimental results, the change of the electric impedance of P...
