Rotating disks are used in various machines such as data storage device, gyroscope, circular saw, etc. Transverse vibration of a rotating disk is very important for the performance of these machines. This work proposes a method to suppress transverse vibration of a very flexible rotating disk in non-contacting manner. A system considered in this study is a very flexible rotating disk with a thrust bearing pad which is located underneath the rotating disk. The pressure force generated in the gap between the rotating disk and the thrust pad pushes the rotating disk in the direction of axis of rotation while the centrifugal force and the elastic recovery force push the rotating disk in reverse direction. The balance between these forces suppresses the transverse vibration of the rotating disk. A coupled disk-fluid system is analyzed numerically. The finite element method is used to compute the pressure distribution between the thrust pad and the rotating disk while the finite difference method is used to compute the transverse vibration of a rotating disk. Results show that the transverse vibration of the rotating disk can be suppressed effectively for certain combination of air bearing and operating parameters.
The vibration of an axially moving string is studied when the string has geometric non-linearity and translating acceleration. Based upon the von karman strain theory, the equations of motion are derived considering the longitudinal and transverse deflection. The equation for the longitudinal vibration is linear and uncoupled, while the equation for the transverse vibration is non-linear and coupled between the longitudinal and transverse deflections. These equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation after they are transformed into the variational equations, i.e. the weak forms so that the admissible and comparison functions can be used for the bases of the longitudinal and transverse deflections respectively. With the discretized nonlinear equations, the time responses are investigated by using the generalized-$\alpha$ method.
Periodic longitudinal vibrations of a video and audio tape and the like used for transducing pictures and sounds may be induced by self-excited vibrations which are caused by frictions against the heads and guides, and their eccentricity, noncircularity or irregularity. It is important to analyze the longitudinal vibration of a tape because it causes distortions of a reproduced signal. It is difficult to measure directly the longitudinal vibration. In this paper a method estimating longitudinal vibration using impulse responses in the transverse direction is presented. And, the parameters boundary domain where the transverse and longitudinal vibration can be decoupled is introduced. In the domain where the both vibrations are decoupled, analytic methods using frequency characteristics and transient responses of the transverse vibration, respectively, are presented. The time domain method predicted more exactly the instantaneous phase of the longitudinal vibration than frequency domain method did.
When a cantilever beam with a lumped mass at its free end undergoes free transverse vibration, internal axial forces are produced in the beam. Such internal axial forces have an effect on free transverse vibration of the beam. This effect is studied in this paper. The equations of motion for the beam in terms of the generalized coordinates including the effect are derived. The method for determining free transverse vibration of the beam including the effect is presented. In numerical simulations, the results of free transverse vibration of the free end of the beam including and not including the effect are obtained. Based on comparison between the results obtained, the conclusions concerning the effect are given.
Information storage devices have been studied to increase the storage capacity and the data transfer rate as well as to decrease the access time and their physical sizes. Optical information storage devices have been achieved high-capacity by reducing optical spot size remarkably due to the development of Blue-ray technology. Optical information storage devices usually use 1.2mm-thick polycarbonate(PC) media to get high enough stiffness. However, it would be better if we can decrease the thickness of a disk for achieving thinner device while keeping the capacity as large as possible. Decreasing the thickness of the storage media makes it difficult to read and write data because it increases the transverse vibration of the rotating disk due to the interaction with surrounding air and the vibration characteristics of thin flexible disk itself, Therefore, a special design based on the fluid mechanics is required to suppress the transverse vibration of the disk in non-contact manner so that the optical pickup can read/write data successfully. In this study, a curved wall is proposed as a stabilizer to suppress the transverse vibration of a $95{\mu}m$-thick PC disk. The characteristics of disk vibration due to a curved wall have been studied through numerical and experimental analysis from the fluid mechanics point of view. The proposed shapes are possible candidates as stabilizers to suppress the transverse vibration of a flexible disk which rotates at high speed.
Most ultrasonic vibration cutting tools are operated at the resonance condition of the longitudinal vibration of the structure consisting of booster, horn and bite. In this study, a transverse vibration tool with beam shape is designed to utilize the vibration characteristics of the beam. Design point of the transverse vibration tool is to match the resonance frequency of the bite to the frequency of the signal to excite the piezoelectric element in the booster. The design process to match the natural frequency of the longitudinal vibration mode of the horn and that of the transverse vibration mode of the bite is presented. Dimensions of the horn and bite are searched by trend analysis through which the standard shapes of the horn and bite are determined. After the dimensions of each component of the cutting tool consisting of booster, horn and bite are determined, the assembled structure was experimentally tested to verify that true resonant condition is achieved and proper vibrational displacement are obtained to ensure that enough cutting force is generated.
In this study, the time varying boundary control using the right boundary transverse motion is suggested to stabilize the transverse vibration of an axially moving string on the basis of the energy flux between the moving string and the boundaries. The effectiveness of the active velocity boundary control is showed through the FDM simulation results. Sliding mode control is adopted in order to achieve velocity tracking control of the time varying right boundary to dissipate vibration energy of the string effectively. Optical sensor system for measuring the transverse vibration of an axially moving string is developed, and the angle of the incident wave to the right boundary, which is the input of the velocity boundary controller, is obtained. Experimental research is carried out to examine the validity and the performance of the transverse vibration control using the suggested velocity right boundary control scheme.

The present study investigated the effect of transverse vibration on the hemorheological characteristics of blood using a newly designed pressure-scanning capillary viscometer. As vibration was applied, aggregated blood cells (rouleaux) were disaggregated. The range of vibration frequency and amplitude are $0{\sim}100\;Hz$ and $0{\sim}0.8\;mm$, respectively for a capillary diameter 0.84 mm. As vibration increased, blood viscosity initially increased and tended to decrease. In order to delineate the unexpected results, the present study proposed two counteracting mechanisms of vibration related with red blood cell (RBC) aggregation affecting hemo-rheological properties. One is the reduction of RBC aggregation due to vibration causing an increase of blood viscosity. The other is forced cell migration due to the transverse vibration, which in turn forms a cell-free layer near the tube wall and causes a decrease of flow resistance.
The transverse vibration of the deploying beam from rigid hub was analyzed by simulation and experiment. The linear governing equation of the deploying beam was obtained using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. To discretize the governing equation, the Galerkin method was used. After transforming the governing equation into the weak form, the weak form was discretized. The discretized equation was expressed by the matrix-vector form, and then the Newmark method was applied to simulate. To consider the damping effect of the beam, we conducted the modal test with various beam length. The mass proportional damping was selected by the relation of the first and second damping ratio. The proportional damping coefficient was calculated using the acquired natural frequency and damping ratio through the modal test. The experiment was set up to measure the transverse vibration of the deploying beam. The fixed beam at the carriage of the linear actuator was moved by moving the carriage. The transverse vibration of the deploying beam was observed by the Eulerian description near the hub. The deploying or retraction motion of the beam had the constant velocity and the velocity profile with acceleration and deceleration. We compared the transverse vibration results by the simulation and experiment. The observed response by the Eulerian description were analyzed.
Free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with a transverse non0propagating open carck are investigated. In the present analysis a special ply-angle distribution referred to as asymmetric stiffness configuration inducing the elastic coupling between chord-wise bending and extension is considered. The open crack is modelled as an equivalent rotational spring whose spring constant is calculated on the basis of fracture mechanics of composite material structures. Governing equations of a composite beam with a open crack are derived via Hamilton's Principle and Timoshenko beam theory encompassing transverse shear and rotary inertia effect. the effects of various parameters such as the ply angle, fiber volume fraction, crack depth, crack position and transverse shear on the free vibration characteristics of the beam with a crack is highlighted. The numerical results show that the natural frequencies obtained from Timoshenko beam theory are always lower than those from Euler beam theory. The presence of intrinsic cracks in anisotropic composite beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of a cracked beam.
