By promoting the international transportation and the improvement of advanced exchange between South and North Korea, the Asian Highway plan was expected to make considerable economical effects in the North-East Asian region. This study focuses on a part of AH6 route (i.e., South Korea-North Korea-China-Far East Russia) and aims to analyze the behavioral change of international passenger transport around the Korean Peninsula by assuming the non-existent North Korea land transport network connectivity. The study was performed using two main methods. First, a stated preference survey was performed to derive the actual modal share of each travel mode. Second, a disaggregate analysis was performed to develop possible mode-choice models for international passenger travel and find out the suitable choice. Based on the results of the model estimation, it is found that over 90% of the international passenger transport would be converted to land transport (rail+highway). In addition, international railroad modal share rate would be increased from 62.8% to 66.1% and international bus would be decreased from 29.6% to 21.9% as the distance lengthened (903km~1,631km).

This study aims to draw a correlation in the choice of automobiles as the preferred mode of personal transport in relation to three factors: 5Ds, urban form and individual-level characteristics. The analysis result shows that the control at the individual level is required to analyze effective urban character and urban form elements to decrease the car choice and the 5Ds demonstrate meaningful relation to decreasing the car choice. However, it may be concluded that the density and the diversity, well-known elements in decreasing the car choice among Western cities do not show relatively large impact on Korean cities.
For accurate demand forecasting of railway logistics, we estimated intercity freight mode choice models based on the binary logit model and using production-consumption data from the Korea Transport Database. We estimated two types of models and compared the results by major item of railway logistics, such as container, cement, and steel: 1) The aggregate freight mode choice models are based on the revealed preference (RP) data and 2) The disaggregate models are based on the stated preference (SP) data. With respect to the container, the travel time variable was found to be statistically significant; however, the travel cost variable was not statistically significant in the RP model, while the travel cost variable was statistically significant in the SP model. For cement and steel, the travel cost variables were statistically significant but the travel time variables were not statistically significant in either the RP or the SP models. These results are inconsistent with results from previous studies based on SP data, which showed that the travel time variables were significant. Consequently, it can be concluded that the travel time factor should be considered in container transport, but that this factor is negligible for cement and steel transport.
The objective of this study is to develop a supply chain-based freight distribution channel choice model considering shippers' logistics behaviors which will be used for freight demand estimation. For this purpose, this study utilized the distribution channel data of the petrochemical and automobile industries collected by KTDB center. The distribution channel choice models for these industries were developed by including transport mode, time, cost, and shipment size. It was found that the multinomial logit model with transport cost, time and shipment size is the best, and as shipment increases, bigger transport mode is preferred. Generally direct distribution channel with small truck was preferred over the one using distribution center and/or big truck.

The next generation high-speed train, HEMU-430X, was developed and is now being tested. However, the existing mode choice models based on the guidelines for feasibility studies do not consider a high-speed train with a higher speed than KTX. This limitation might result in inaccurate demand forecasting. In this research, a stated preference survey was conducted in order to supplement the problem by considering the characteristics of HEMU-430X. Based on the survey results, this research developed two mode choice models, including a multinomial logit model and a nested logit model. For this purpose, the utility functions of travel time and travel costs were estimated using a Limdep 8.0 NLOGIT 3.0 package. After comparing the two models, it was concluded that the nested logit model is appropriate. The paper suggested a plan to implement the nested logit model and presented a policy implication.
In mode choice decision, travelers consider not only travel time but also reliability of its modes. In this paper, reliability was expressed in terms of standard deviation and maximum delay that were measured based on triangular distribution. In order to estimate value of time and value of reliability, the Multinomial and Nested Logit models were used. The analysis results revealed that reliability is an important factor affecting mode choice decisions. Elasticity is used to estimate the impacts of the different policies and system improvements for water transportation mode. Among these policies, decision maker can assess and select the best alternative by doing the benefit and cost analysis based on a new market share, the value of time, and the value of reliability. Finally, a set of promising policies and system improvement of the water transportation were proposed.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of trip chaining activities of elderly and explores temporal and spatial distribution. The research also estimates ordered probit model and binary logistic model to investigate various factors affecting trip chaining and mode choice patterns. We utilized household survey data for elderly conducted in 2006 and 2010 in Seoul metropolitan area. Research results indicate that trip chaining showed an increasing trend and simple trip chaining counts for more than 85%. GIS mapping expressed spatial distribution of trip departure and arrival areas, particularly showing regional changes in job-related trips. We also found that more factors influence trip chaining in 2010, compared with 2006, and travel cost is more sensitive than travel time in determining travel mode. The research contributes to establish transportation policies based on travel behavior of elderly in a upcoming super-aged society.

As the amount of information is rapidly growing, and the ubiquitous urban environments are emerging, the question which information type to provide and which communication media to support is a major challenge for commercial and public travel-information service providers. The current research reports the first findings of analyses of recent data, collected in metropolitan Seoul, about the acquisition of travel information and the communication media used. The study is based on the assumption that information acquisition and choice of communication medium is strongly context-driven. The study applies CHAID analysis to find homogeneous segments in information acquisition and use of communication media. Findings indicate that transport mode and activity are important determinant of information acquisition and choice of media. The type of travel information acquired co-varies strongly with transport mode and activity. In addition, we found evidence of time of day effects. Similarly, the choice of communication medium depends on the type of travel information searched for, transport mode and activity. The results suggest important implications of managerial and policy measures, in particular the dynamic, contextual market segmentation.
The term, travel time reliability, refers to variations in journey time that travelers cannot predict. This issue has been one of the main research topics in transport studies. This paper, especially, investigates the value of travel time reliability. The marginal substitution rate method is suggested as the way for the valuation and travelers' stated preference data are collected based on a choice experiment. A mode choice model is estimated using the data surveyed. The parameters of travel costs and travel time reliability from the model are used to calculate the marginal substitution rate that is interpreted as the value of travel time reliability. The value is arranged by travel areas of intercity and urban trips and by journey purposes of working and non-working types. The result of this research is expected to be helpful of conducting more cautious economic feasibility studies of transport schemes.

With the advent of age that people spend more time and money on leisure activities, there is increasing interest in professional sport games. The location of large scale sport facilities has substantial impacts on existing transportation pattern because the facility attracts and generates massive traffic volume within a short period of time. This study aims to develop a mode choice model of leisure trips of which the destinations are a sport facility. A structured SP (stated preference) survey questionnaires were developed through an experimental design, and professional sport spectators were asked to state their preference in the choice of transport mode to the sport facility. The survey results show that public transportation is preferred to passenger cars for their trip to big sports event, implying that the convenience of back home trip after the event is an important factor of their mode choice. This study is a rare research on the trip pattern to sports complex in Korea, which provides policy implications on the provision of mass transit including subway system to large scale sport complexes. And it is also expected that this study contributes to future researches on leisure trip pattern.
