Transparent materials are necessary for most photoelectric devices, which allow the light generation from electric energy or vice versa. Metal oxides are usual materials for transparent conductors to have high optical transmittance with good electrical properties. Functional designs may apply in various applications, including solar cells, photodetectors, and transparent heaters. Nanoscale structures are effective to drive the incident light into light-absorbing semiconductor layer to improve solar cell performances. Recently, the new metal oxide materials have inaugurated functional device applications. Nickel oxide (NiO) is the strong p-type metal oxide and has been applied for all transparent metal oxide photodetector by combining with n-type ZnO. The abrupt p-NiO/n-ZnO heterojunction device has a high transmittance of 90% for visible light but absorbs almost entire UV wavelength light to show the record fastest photoresponse time of 24 ms. For other applications, NiO has been applied for solar cells and transparent heaters to induce the enhanced performances due to its optical and electrical benefits. We discuss the high possibility of metal oxides for current and future transparent electronic applications.
Silver nanowire random networks are promising candidates for replacing indium tin oxide (ITO) as transparent and conductive electrodes. They can also be used as transparent heating films with self-cleaning and defogging properties. By virtue of the Joule heating effect, silver nanowire random networks can be heated when voltage bias is applied; however, they are unsuitable for long-term use. In this work, we study the Joule heating of silver nanowire random networks embedded in polymers. Silver nanowire random networks embedded in polymers exhibit breakdown under the application of electric current. Their surface morphological changes indicate that nanoparticle formation may be the main cause of this electrical breakdown. Numerical analyses are used to investigate the temperatures of the silver nanowire and substrate.

A normally open thermopneumaticc-actuated microvalve has been fabricated and their properties are investigated. The advantages of the proposed microvalve are of the low cost fabrication process and the transparent optical property using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. The fabricated microvalves with in-channel configuration are easily integrated with other microfluidic devices on the same substrate. The fabrication process of thermopneumatic-actuated microvalvesusing PDMS is very simple and its performance is very suitable for a disposable lab-on-a-chip. The PDMS membrane deflection increases and the flow rates of the microchannel with microvalvels decrease as the applied power to the ITO heater increases. The powers at flow-off are dependent on the membrane thickness and the applied inlet pressure but are independent of the channel width of microvalves. The flow rate is well controlled by the switching function of ITO heater and the closing/opening times are around 20 sec and 25 sec, respectively.

The objective of this work is to measure space and time resolved wall heat fluxes during nucleate pool boiling of R113/R11 mixtures using a microscale heater array in conjunction with a high speed CCD. The microscale heater array is constructed using VLSI techniques, and consists of 96 serpentine platinum resistance heaters on a transparent quartz substrate. Electronic feedback circuits are used to keep the temperature of each heater at a specified temperature and the variation in heating power required to keep the temperature constant is measured. Heat flux data around an isolated bubble are obtained with triggered CCD images. CCD images are obtained at a rate of 1000frames/second. The heat transfer variation vs. time on the heaters directly around the nucleation site is plotted and correlated with images of the bubble obtainedby using the high speed CCD. For both of the mixture(R11/R113) and pure system(pure R11, pure R113), the wall heat fluxes are presented and compared to find out the qualitative difference between pure and binary mixture nucleate boiling.
The thin film that is electrically conductive and optically transparent is called conductive transparent thin film. ITO(Indium-Tin Oxide) which is a kind of conductive transparent thin film has been widely used in solar cell, transparent electrical heater, selective optical filter, FDP(Flat Display Panel) such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and so on. Especially in PDP, ITO films is used as a transparent electrode in order to maintain discharge and decrease consumption power through the improvement of cell structure. In this study, we prepared ITO by reactive r.f. sputtering with indium-tin(Sn wt 10%) alloy target instead of indium-tin oxide target. The ITO films deposited at low temperature $150^{\circ}C$ and 8% $O_2$ partial pressure showed about $3.6{\Omega}/{\square}$. At the end of firing, the resistance of ITO was decreased, the optical transparence was improved above 90%.

Coatings on glass with highly transparent conducting oxide films(TCOs) are performed mostly by using indium tin oxide(ITO). This Oxide material is very common for applications where both high electrical conductivity. Photovoltaic cells, transparent electrical heater, selective optical filter, and a optical transmittance are essential. In this study, ITO thin films were deposited on $SiO_2$/soda-line glass plates by a dc magnetron sputtering technique. The crystallinity and electrical properties of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) scanning and 4-point probe. The optical transmittance of ITO films in the range of 300-800nm were measured with a spectrophotometer. As a result, we obtained polycrystalline structured ITO films with (222), (400), and (440) peak. Transmittance of all the films were higher than 90% in the visible range.
ZnO/Cu/ZnO (ZCZ) thin films were deposited at room temperature on a glass substrate using direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF, 13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering and then the effect of post-deposition electron irradiation on the structural, optical, electrical and transparent heater properties of the films were considered. ZCZ films that were electron beam irradiated at 500 eV showed an increase in the grain sizes of their ZnO(102) and (201) planes to 15.17 nm and 11.51 nm, respectively, from grain sizes of 13.50 nm and 10.60 nm observed in the as deposited films. In addition, the film's optical and electrical properties also depended on the electron irradiation energies. The highest opto-electrical performance was observed in films electron irradiated at 500 eV. In a heat radiation test, when a bias voltage of 18 V was applied to the film that had been electron irradiated at 500 eV, its steady state temperature was about 90.5 ℃. In a repetition test, it reached the steady state temperature within 60 s at all bias voltages.
The material that is both conductive in electricity and transparent to the visible ray is called transparent conducting thin film. It has many fields of application such as Solar Cell, Liquid Crystal display, Vidicon on T.V, transparent electrical heater, selective optical filter, and a optical electric device , etc. In the recent papers on several TCO( transparent conducting oxide ) material, the study is mainly focusing on ITO(indium tin oxide) because ITO shows good results on both optical and electrical properties. Nowaday, in the development of LCD(Liquid Crystal display), the low temperature process to reduce the production cost and to deposit ITO on polymer substrate (or low melting substrate) has been demanded. In this study, we prepared indium tin oxide(ITO) by a cylindrical DC magnetron sputtering with Indium-tin (9:1) alloy target instead of indium-tin oxide target. The resistivity of the film deposited in oxygen partial pressure of 5% and substrate temperature of 140.deg. C. is 1.6*10$\^$-4/.ohm..cm with 85% optical transmission in viaible ray.

Many practical applications of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have been proposed and there have been attempts to utilize CNT films as transparent electrodes for solar cells and displays. Our group has considered the use of the CNT film as a thin film heater (TFH) and proposed it for the first time and reported the thermal behavior of the TFH made of single walled CNTs. However, due to the relatively high electrical resistance of the CNT film, using the TFH in application areas requiring high heat flux has been a difficult problem. To overcome this obstacle, we adopted a 'branch electrodes' concept to increase the film conductance dramatically. If two branch electrodes are inserted into a TFH whose original electrical resistance is R, the total resistance will be reduced to R/9. Because of the increased aspect ratio, the resistance of each segmented TFH will be reduced to R/3. Furthermore, since they are connected in parallel, the total resistance reduces to R/9. This could be extended to n branch electrodes, and the total resistance of the film will be reduced to R/(n+1)2, if the resistance of electrodes are negligibly small. We fabricated the heaters with different number of branch electrodes. The number of branch electrodes of the fabricated heaters are 0, 2, 4, 8 and their electrical resistance are 101.4, 39.5, 20.0, $15.4{\Omega}$, respectively. We applied 20V to each heater and monitored the temperature variations. We could achieve high heating temperature even with low voltage supply. This technique could be applied to relevant industrial applications which need high power film heater.

A thermopneumatic-actuated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropump has been fabricated and their properties are characterized. The diffusers are used as a flow-rectifying element instead of passive check valves. The advantages of the proposed microvalve are of the low cost fabrication process and the transparent optical property using PDMS and indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. We presented the PDMS micropump that is easily integrated with the in-channel PDMS microvalves on the same substrate. The flowrate of the micropump increases linearly as the applied pulse voltage to the ITO heater increases. The fabricated ITO heater resistance is 6.54k$\Omega$. The peak of the flow rate is observed at the duty ratio of 10% for the applied pulse voltage of 55V at 6Hz and the maximum flow rate of 78nl/min is measured.
