  • Recently, stretchable and transparent electrodes have received great attention owing to their potential for realizing wearable electronics. Unlike the traditional transparent electrodes represented by indium tin oxide (ITO), stretchable and transparent electrodes are able to maintain their electrical and mechanical properties even under stretching stress. Lots of research efforts have been dedicated to the development of stretchable and transparent electrodes since they represent the most important engineering platform for the production of wearable electronics. Various approaches using silver nanowires, nanostructured networks, conductive polymers, and carbon-based electrodes have been explored by many world leading research groups. In this review, present and recent advances in the fabrication methods of stretchable and transparent electrodes are discussed.

  • We reported on antireflective ZnSnO (ZTO)/Ag bilayer and ZTO/Ag/ZTO trilayer source/drain (S/D) electrodes for all-transparent ZTO channel based thin film transistors (TFTs). The ZTO/Ag bilayer is more transparent (83.71%) and effective source/drain (S/D) electrodes for the ZTO channel/Al2O3 gate dielectric/ITO gate electrode/glass structure than ZTO/Ag/ZTO trilayer because the bottom ZTO layer in the trilayer increasea contact resistance between S/D electrodes and ZTO channel layer and reduce the antireflection effect. The ZTO based all-transparent TFTs with ZTO/Ag bilayer S/D electrode showed a saturation mobility of 4.54cm2/Vs and switching property (1.31V/decade) comparable to TTFT with Ag S/D electrodes.

  • We investigated the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities and electrooptical characteristics of semi-transparent silver paste electrodes substituting indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. Experimental results show that a uniform vertical LC alignment and a large pretilt angle were achieved using the semi-transparent silver paste. The vertical alignment mode based on the semi-transparent silver paste electrodes showed appropriate electro-optical characteristics and a high transparency in comparison with that based on the ITO electrodes. These results indicate that the semi-transparent silver paste electrodes of liquid crystal displays could substitute the ITO electrodes.

  • Anodic oxidized $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays are promising materials for application in photoelectrochemical solar cells as the photoanode, because of their attractive properties including slow electron recombination rate, superior light scattering, and smooth electrolyte diffusion. However, because of the opacity of these nanotube electrodes, the back-side illumination is inevitable for the application in solar cells. Therefore, for the fabrication of solar cells with the anodic oxidized nanotube electrodes, it is required to develop efficient and transparent counter electrodes. Here, we demonstrate quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) based on the nanotube photoanode and transparent counter electrodes. The transparent counter electrodes based on Pt electrocatalysts were prepared by a simple thermal decomposition methods. The photovoltaic performances of QDSCs with nanotube photoanode were tested and optimized depending on the concentration of Pt precursor solutions for the preparation of counter electrodes.

  • The 'field-effect' underlies the operation of most conventional electronic devices. However, effective control and implementation of the field-effect in semiconductor devices are limited due to screening of the electric-field by conducting electrodes. Thus far, the electronic devices have necessarily been designed to avoid or minimize the electric-field screening effect. As an alternative approach to this, a new type of conducting electrodes which would be transparent to both visible light and electric-field while being electrically conductive have been developed. Here, we define these electrodes as 'electric-field transparent electrodes' and provide a review on related work. Particular attention is paid to the material selection and design strategies to enhance the electric-field transparency of the electrodes while maintaining good electrical conductivity and optical transparency. We then introduce potential applications of the electric-field transparent electrodes in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

  • Multilayer transparent electrodes (MTE) based on an ultrathin metal layer assisted by additional dielectric or semiconducting layers are investigated as electrodes in OLEDs including an inverted geometry. A special attention is paid to their tuning capability in injection behavior and to their potential for ultra-flexible electrodes.

  • We have investigated liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of transparent electrodes as Al-doped ZnO (AZO) substituting indium tin oxide (ITO). The experiment results show that a uniform vertical LC alignment on AZO electrodes based on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface were achieved. A high pretilt angle of about $88^{\circ}$ was obtained. EO performances of the VA cell on rubbed PI surfaces with AZO electrodes are almost the same as that of the VA cell with ITO electrodes. These results appeared that AZO electrodes as transparent electrodes of LCDs could substitute ITO electrodes.

  • In this study, composite transparent electrodes were fabricated either from a conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) or silver nanowire (AgNW). Three transparent electrodes such as PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PSS and AgNW mixture, and AgNW were fabricated. As for a transparent electrode, measured sheet resistance values were 89.6, 60.6 and 28.6 Ω/sq, and the transmittance values were 80.2, 82.0 and 83.8% while surface roughness (Rq) values were 4.1, 8.1, 20.4 nm for PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PSS and AgNW mixture, and AgNW, respectively. To verify the overall performance of these composite electrodes, we applied these electrodes to the top electrode of the solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs). PEDOT:PSS provided the best performance with a fill factor (FF) of 51.2% and a photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.2%, while traditional metal top electrode OSC provided FF of 60.5% and PCE of 3.1%.

  • A hybrid transparent electrode was fabricated with graphene and silver nanowires (Ag NWs). Three different processes were used to fabricate the hybrid electrode. Measurements of the sheet resistances, transmittances, and surface roughnesses of the hybrid electrodes were used to identify the optimal fabrication process. The surface roughness of the hybrid electrodes with Ag NWs embedded in a transparent polymer matrix was significantly lower than that of the other hybrid electrodes. A hybrid electrode fabricated by transferring graphene onto Ag NWs after spin-coating the Ag NWs onto the substrate showed the lowest sheet resistance. The transmittance of the hybrid electrodes was comparable to that of Ag NW electrodes.

  • Zinc tin oxide transparent thin film transistors (ZTO TTFTs) were fabricated by using $n^+$ Si wafers as gate electrodes. Indium (In), aluminum (Al), indium tin oxide (ITO), silver (Ag), and gold (Au) were employed for source and drain electrodes, and the mobility and the threshold voltage of ZTO TTFTs were observed as a function of electrode. The ZTO TTFTs adopting In as electrodes showed the highest mobility and the lowest threshold voltage. It was shown that Ag and Au are not suitable for the electrodes of ZTO TTFTs. As the results of this study, it is considered that the interface properties of electrode/ZTO are more influential in the properties of ZTO TTFTs than the conductivity of electrode.
