  • The ultrasonic guided wave-based technique has become one of the most promising methods in non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring, because of its advantages of large area inspection, evaluating inaccessible areas on the structure and high sensitivity to small damage. To further advance the development of damage detection technologies using ultrasonic guided waves for the inspection of welded components in structures, the transmission characteristics of the ultrasonic guided waves propagating through welded joints with various types of defects or damage in steel plates are studied and presented in this paper. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model considering the different material properties of the mild steel, high strength steel and austenitic stainless steel plates and their corresponding welded joints as well as the interaction condition of the steel plate and welded joint, is developed. The FE model is validated against analytical solutions and experimental results reported in the literature and is demonstrated to be capable of providing a reliable prediction on the features of ultrasonic guided wave propagating through steel plates with welded joints and interacting with defects. Mode conversion and scattering analysis of guided waves transmitted through the different types of weld defects in steel plates are performed by using the validated FE model. Parametric studies are undertaken to elucidate the effects of several basic parameters for various types of weld defects on the transmission performance of guided waves. The findings of this research can provide a better understanding of the transmission behaviour of ultrasonic guided waves propagating through welded joints with defects. The method could be used for improving the performance of guided wave damage detection methods.

  • The properties of polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites with organoclay have been compared in terms of their thermo-mechanical properties, morphology, and gas permeability. Hexadecylamine-montmorillonite ($C_{16}$-MMT) was used as an organoclay to make PU hybrid films. The properties were investigated as a function of organoclay content (1-4 wt%) in the PU matrix. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) photographs showed that most clay layers were dispersed homogeneously into the matrix polymer in nano-scale, although some particles of clay were agglomerated. We also found that the addition of only a small amount of organoclay was enough to improve the thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of PU hybrid films while gas permeability was reduced. Even at low organoclay content (<5 wt%), the PU nanocomposite showed much better thermo-mechanical properties, and lower gas permeability than pure PU.

  • In this paper, we researched the dielectric properties and voltage dependence on slice XLPE sheet from 22[kV] and 154[kV] power cable. We studied effects for impurities and water for semiconductor shield through a dielectric properties experiment to estimate performance of insulating materials in power cable. Capacitance and $tan{\delta}$ of 22[kV], 154[kV] were 53/43[pF] and $7.4{\times}10^{-4}$, $2.1510^{-4}$. In these results, the trend was increased with the increase of temperature. The tan6 of XLPE/semiconductor layer was increased as compared with that of XLPE. Dielectric properties reliability of tan6 was small. Also, To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable in this study, we have investigated chemical properties showing by changing the content of carbon black that is semiconductive additives for underground power transmission. Specimens were made of sheet form with the three of existing resins and the nine of specimens for measurement. Chemical properties of specimens was measured by FT-ATR (Fourier Transform Attenuated Total Reflectance). The condition of specimens was a solid sheet. We could observe functional group (C=O, carbonyl group) of specimens through FT-ATR. From these experimental result, the concentration of functional group (C=O) was high according to increasing the content of carbon black. We could know EEA was excellent more than other specimens from above experimental results.

  • In the oil and gas industry, composite materials should exhibit high flexibility and strength for offshore structures. Therefore, weak points in the composites should be improved, such as brittleness, moisture penetration, and diffusion of detrimental ions into nanometric pores. This study aimed to increase the strength, flexibility, and plugging of nanopores using single-layer graphene oxide (SGO) nanosheets. Therefore, SGO is added to unsaturated polyester resin at concentrations of 0.015 and 0.15 % with Normal Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent for the formation of Nanographene Oxide Reinforced Polymer (NGORP). The mechanical properties of the prepared samples were tested using tensile testing (ASTM-D 638). It has been shown that incorporating SGO, approximately 0.015%, into the base resin resulted in enhanced properties such as rupture resistance forces increased by 745.61 N, applied stress tolerances increased by 4.1 MPa, longitude increased to 1.58 mm, elongation increased by about 2.38%, and rupture energy increased by about 204.51 J. Despite the decrease in tensile force strength properties in the manufactured nanocomposite with 0.15% SGO, it has exclusive flexibility properties such as a high required energy level for rupture of 5,576 times and a formability of 40% more than the base sample. It would be best to use NGORP manufactured from 0.015% nanosheets with exclusive properties rather than base samples for constructing parts and equipment, such as rebars, composite sheets, and transmission pipes, on offshore platforms.

  • Co-Fe-Al-O nano-granular thin films with high electrical resistivity, fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering under an $Ar+O_2$ atmosphere, are found to show good soft magnetic properties in the GHz frequency range. The real part value of the relative permeability is 260 at low frequencies and this value is maintained up to the GHz frequency range. A non-integrated type noise filter on a coplanar waveguide transmission line is demonstrated by using the Co-Fe-Al-O nano-granular thin film with the dimensions of $4\;mm(l){\times}4\;mm(w){\times}0.1\;{\mu}m(t)$. The insertion loss is very low being less than 0.3 dB and this low value is maintained up to 2 GHz. At a ferromagnetic resonance frequency of 3.3 GHz, the degree of noise suppression is measured to be 3 dB. This level of noise attenuation is small for real applications, but there is much room for further improvement by increasing the magnetic volume and integrating the magnetic thin film into the CPW transmission line.

  • Adiabatic property of plywood wall panel was examined to evaluate their thermal conductivities. The amount of heat loss was investigated through overall heat transmission experiment. Styroform and grass wool showed less heat loss. However, yellowsoil board and laminated lumber showed high volume specific heat capacity. When the changes of indoor and outdoor temperature were checked in model house, wall manufactured with styroform and grass wool was affected easily by the changes of outdoor temperature. Yellowsoil, the mixed board of yellowsoil and sawdust, and laminated lumber, which have high volume specific heat capacity, were not affected much. The rates of overall heat transmission were much better in styroform and grasswool, but the adiabatic properties were much higher in yellowsoil board and the mixed board of yellowsoil and sawdust. The results showed that the insulating material can be developed using yellowsoil and wood, which are nature friendly materials.

  • The filtering characteristics of planar distributed feedback (DFB) waveguides composed by gratings with different period are solved using equivalent transmission-line network. To analyze explicitly its band-pass and resonance properties, a longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT) based on Floquet's theorem and Babinet's principle is newly developed. The numerical results reveal that this approach offers a simple and analytic algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of cascaded DFB structure with different period, and the bandwidth and side-lobe suppression of cascaded DFB filter are sensitively dependent on the variation of aspect ratio and the number of grating at each region.

  • The IGBT structure developed in this paper is used as a high power switch semiconductor for DC transmission and distribution and it is expected that it will be used as an important electronic device for new and long distance DC transmission in the future by securing fast switching speed and improved breakdown voltage characteristic. As a new type of next generation power semiconductors, it is designed to improve the switching speed while at the same time improving the breakdown voltage characteristics, reducing power loss characteristics, and achieving high current density advantages at the same time. These improved properties were obtained by further introducing SiO2 into the N-drift region of the Planar IGBT and were compared and analyzed using the Sentaurus TCAD simulation tool.

  • Gas-assisted etching (GAE) with focused ion beam (FIB) was applied to prepare plan-view specimens of Cu thin-layer on a silicon substrate for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). GAE using $XeF_2$ gas selectively etched the silicon substrate without volume loss of the Cu thin-layer. The plan-view specimen of the Cu thin film prepared by FIB milling with GAE was observed by scanning electron microscopy and $C_S$-corrected high-resolution TEM to estimate the size and microstructure of the TEM specimen. The GAE with FIB technique overcame various artifacts of conventional FIB milling technique such as bending, shrinking and non-uniform thickness of the TEM specimens. The Cu thin film was uniform in thickness and relatively larger in size despite of the thickness of <200 nm.

  • Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a class of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have attracted growing interest because of their promising applications. The properties of TMDs strongly depend on the crystalline structure and the number and stacking sequence of layers in their crystals and thin films. Though electrical, mechanical, and magnetic studies of 2D materials are being conducted, there is an evident lack of direct atom-by-atom visualization, limiting insight on these highly exciting material systems. Herein, we present our recent studies on the characterization of 2D layered materials by means of aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), in particular via high angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging. We have identified the atomic arrangements and defects in 2H stacked TMDs, 1T stacked TMDs, distorted 1T stacked TMDs, and vertically integrated heterojunctions of 2D TMDs crystals.
