A bench-scale anoxic membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, consisting of a bioreactor coupled to a ceramic crossflow ultrafiltration module, was evaluated to treat a synthetic wastewater containing alkaline hydrolysis byproducts (hydrolysates) of RDX, The wastewater was formulated the same as RDX hydrolysates, and consisted of acetate, formate, formaldehyde as carbon sources and nitrite, nitrate as electron accepters. The MBR system removed 80 to 90% of these carbon sources, and approximately 90% of the stoichiometric amount of nitrate, 60% of nitrite. The reactor was also operated over a range of transmembrane pressures, temperatures, suspended solids concentration, and organic loading rate in order to maximize treatment efficiency and permeate flux. Increasing transmembrane pressure and temperature did not improve membrane flux significantly. Increasing biomass concentration in the bioreactor decreased the permeate flux significantly. The maximum volumetric organic loading rate was $0.72kg\;COD/m^3/day$, and the maximum F/M ratio was 0.50 kg N/kg MLSS/day and 1.82 kg COD/kg MLSS/day. Membrane permeate was clear and essentially free of bacteria, as indicated by heterotrophic plate count. Permeate flux ranged between 0.15 and $2.0m^3/m^2/day$ and was maintained by routine backwashing every 3 to 4 day. Backwashing with 2% NaOCl solution every fourth or fifth backwashing cycle was able to restore membrane flux to its original value.
We prepared monodispersed calcium alginate microspheres by controlling various conditions of emulsification procedure using a lab-scale batch type membrane emulsification system equipped with SPG (Shirasu porous glass) tubular membranes. We determined the effects of process parameters of membrane emulsification (ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, alginate concentration, emulsifier concentration, type and concentration of stabilizer, transmembrane pressure, concentration of crosslinking agent, stirring speed and membrane pore size) on the mean size and size distribution of alginate microspheres. The increase of the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, transmembrane pressure and alginate concentration led to the increase in the mean size of alginate microspheres. On the contrary, the increase in emulsifier concentration, stirring speed of the continuous phase and concentration of the crosslinking agent caused the reduction of the mean size of microspheres. Through controlling these parameters, monodisperse alginate microspheres with about $6{\mu}{\textrm{m}}$ of the mean size and 1.1 of the size distribution value were finally prepared in case of the using SPC membrane with the pore size of $2.9{\mu}{\textrm{m}}$.
This study was aimed to optimize the required condition for recovering the low soluble taste component obtained from sea tangle extract using ultrafiltration, and to investigate effects of membrane type, temperature, transmembrane pressure and flow rate respectively. We also compared relationship between the profile of permeate flux and the recovery yield of taste component under the selected optimal condition using ultrafiltration and diafiltration. Hydrophobic GR 51 PP membrane kept higher average permeate flux than hydrophilic FS membrane, and average permeate flux also had increasing tendency in relation to rising flow rate but it showed limit value of 3.7 l/min. Average permeate flux decreased as transmembrane pressure increased but it showed little change with rising temperature. Investigation upon average permeate flux, total dissolved solid and recovery yield of taste components using ultrafiltration and diafiltration resulted in relatively higher recovery yield in ultrafiltration. Compared ultrafiltration and diafiltration, average permeate flux was lower in ultrafiltration.
In the advanced treatment of sewage using the submerged membrane-coupled sequencing batch reactor (SMSBR) with media, the effect of media on the filtration performance and removal efficiency were investigated. Dosages of the media in the SMSBR were 10% based on working volume of reactor. As a control system, SMSBR without media and PAC, SMSBR with PAC (10 g/L) only, and SMSBR with media and PAC were also operated. The experimental results showed that there was no big difference observed in the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P irrespective of the dosages of the media and PAC. But transmembrane pressure (TMP) of SMSBR with media increased slowly during the operation time, while that of SMSBR without media increased rapidly. Using SMSBR with media, it was possible to operate without the membrane cleaning during the 91 days. Using SMSBR with media only, after 80 days the average removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P were 95.0, 69.3%, and 51.4%, respectively.
Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has previously been used by water industry to treat high salinity wastewater. In this study, an anoxic-oxic biofilm-membrane bioreactor (AOB-MBR) system has been developed to treat mustard tuber wastewater of 10% salinity (calculated as NaCl). To figure out the effects of operating conditions of the AOB-MBR on membrane fouling rate ($K_V$), response surface methodology was used to evaluate the interaction effect of the three key operational parameters, namely time interval for pump (t), aeration intensity ($U_{Gr}$) and transmembrane pressure (TMP). The optimal condition for lowest membrane fouling rate ($K_V$) was obtained: time interval was 4.0 min, aeration intensity was $14.6 m^3/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ and transmembrane pressure was 19.0 kPa. And under this condition, the treatment efficiency with different influent loads, i.e. 1.0, 1.9 and $3.3kgCODm^{-3}d^{-1}$ was researched. When the reactor influent load was less than $1.9kgCODm^{-3}d^{-1}$, the effluent could meet the third discharge standard of "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard". This study suggests that the model fitted by response surface methodology can predict accurately membrane fouling rate within the specified design space. And it is feasible to apply the AOB-MBR in the pickled mustard tuber factory, achieving satisfying effluent quality.

In this study, permeation experiments were carried out using the symmetric and asymmetric sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) modes for the submerged flat sheet membrane in the 0.5 wt% emulsion type cutting oil solution. The effective area and nominal pore size of the used microfiltration membrane were $0.02m^2$ and $0.15{\mu}m$, respectively. The emulsion cutting oil was rejected over 99% based on turbidity. Transmembrane pressure increased lower as the aeration rates increased. The symmetric SFCO mode was a little more effective than the symmetric SFCO mode in low permeate flux between 10 and $15L/m^2{\cdot}h$. However, the symmetric SFCO mode was shown very effectively in high permeate flux between 25 and $30L/m^2{\cdot}h$.
In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to operational time in order to estimate fouling of the submerged membrane in the membrane bioreactor(MBR). The microfiltration flat sheet module which has $0.02m^2$ of effective area and $0.15{\mu}m$ nominal pore size was submerged in the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L. The permeate experiments were carried out simultaneously to compare TMP of the run/stop (R/S) with that of the sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO). TMP for SFCO mode was up to 93% lower than that of R/S mode, and the effect of TMP drop reduced as permeate flux increased. Also, TMP of the SCFO mode was maintained below 40% of the limited operating TMP 55 kPa until the permeate operational time extended to longer than 5 times for the case as the coagulant $FeCl_3$ was dosed into the activated sludge solution with 500 mg/L concentration.
This experiment was carried out for a laboratory scale activated sludge bioreactor equipped with submerged flat sheet membrane using the synthetic wastewater. The membrane system for the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L was operated with constant permeate flux by continuously permeating and periodically 10 minute-permeating/2 minute-resting modes, respectively. The transmembrane pressure was measured as the permeate flux increased from 10 to $25L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ under the constant air flowrate 0.25 L/min. Also, the complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, incompressible cake and linear compressible cake fouling models were retrofitted for the experimental data in order to determine the state of the membrane fouling. Because the transmembrane pressure fluctuated as a pulse shape for every period of 10 minute-permeating/2-minute resting mode, the membrane fouling models were separately applied for the maximum and minimum connecting lines. The linear compressible cake fouling model for the activated sludge cakes was the best fitted with the experimental results from the above five models.
In this study, permeation experiments were conducted using naturally circulating spherical beads, backwashable plate membrane and the air supplied from the bottom of the MBR. The activated sludge solution was maintained at 8,000 mg/L of MLSS and compared transmembrane pressure (TMP) with respect to FR (filtration and relaxation), FR/BW (filtration and relaxation/backwashing), SFCO (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation) and SFCO/BW (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation/backwashing). As the backwashing flux decreased from 47 to $14L/m^2{\cdot}hr$, the TMP increased generally, but the TMP of FR system increased significantly comparing with SFCO. In addition, the backwashing method reduced more TMP comparing to the cleaning method using spherical beads, and it was confirmed that the operation method using the spherical beads and the backwashing simultaneously is more effective than each method.
When preparing calcium alginate microspheres using rotating membrane emulsification that rotates SPG (Shirasu porous glass) tubular membrane in the continuous phase, the optimal conditions of rotating membrane emulsification process parameters for producing monodisperse microspheres were determined. We determined the effects of process parameters of rotating membrane emulsification (the rotating speed of membrane module, the transmembrane pressure, the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, the alginate concentration, the emulsifier concentration, the stabilizer concentration, the crosslinking agent concentration, and the membrane pore size) on the mean size and size distribution of alginate microspheres. As a result, the size of the microspheres decreased as the rotating speed of membrane module, the emulsifier concentration, and the crosslinking agent concentration increased among the process parameters of rotating membrane emulsification. On the contrary, as the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, the transmembrane pressure, and the alginate concentration increased, the size of the microspheres increased. In the rotating membrane emulsification using an SPG membrane with a pore size of 3.2 ㎛, it was possible to finally prepare monodisperse alginate microspheres with a particle size of 4.5 ㎛ through the control of process parameters.
