  • Two-monthold silver carps were cultured with seven algal species and zooplankton (Moina macrocopa) in the laboratory. The carps were reared in 10 L translucent cylindrical aquaria with algae and zooplankton for 8 days. The Moina effectively fed almost cultured algae: perfectly removed Cryptomonas (NIES-282) within 60 min. Both algal diets Cryptomonas and Fragilaria (NIES-391) significantly increased the Moina population ($r^2$>0.93, p<0.005), while Microcystis (MIES-90) and Oscillatoria (NIES-204) reduced the zooplankton ($r^2$=0.97, p<001). Fish removed about 50% of all algae for 52 hrs, even 60% of Microcystis still remained: all algae reduced ca. 5${\sim}$12% of initial weight. Furthermore, a continuous supply of algae with same density resulted in the death of fish, e.g. 11 days in cyanobacteria Microcystis. Therefore, the growth limitation of silver carp by algae indicates that zooplankton is of direct dietary contributor in planktivores feeding behavior.

  • The process of embryogenesis and larval development of the asteroid sea star Asterias amurensis $(U{\ddot{u}}tken)$ was observed, with special attention paid to morphological change and larval duration. In reproductive season, mature sea stars were collected under floating net cages, located in Tongyeong, southern Korea. The mature eggs are $138\;{\mu}m$ in average diameter, semi-translucent and orange in color, sperms in good condition appear light cream to white-gray in color. Embryos develop through the holoblastic equal cleavage stage and a wrinkled blastula stage that lasts about 9 hours after fertilization. Gastrulae bearing an expanded archenteron hatch from the fertilization envelope 22 hours after fertilization. At the end of gastrulation, rudiments of the left and right coelom are formed. By day 2, larvae possess complete alimentary canal and begin to feed. At this stage, the larva is called early bipinnaria. In 6-day-old larvae, the pre- and post- oral ciliated bands form complete circuits and the bipinnarial processes start to develop. By day 12, the lateral and anterior projection of the larval wall processes along the ciliated bands begins to thicken and curl, and the ciliated bands become more prominent. By day 32, early brachiolaria are presented with three pairs of brachiolar arms. Advanced brachiolaria with a well-developed brachiolar complex (three pairs of brachia and central adhesive disc) occur 6 weeks after fertilization. In the field, spawning of the sea star was observed in April to May, settlement form larvae and just settlements seem to occur from June to July, and early juveniles occur from August to September. Although we had not described the end of brachiolaria stage, it can be tentatively estimated that the duration of the pelagic stage of A. amurensis is 40 to 50 days.

  • Physical properties and microstructure of new coumarin 4 doped $SiO_2$-PDMS ORMOSILs, synthesized by one-step (OS, acid-catalysis) and two-step (TS, acid-base catalysis) routes of sol-gel method with varying pH (0.6 to 7) and dye content $(5\;{times}\;10^{-4}\;to\;5{\times}\;10^{-2}\;mole)$, are reported. BET, UV-visible spectroscopy and SEM were used for characterizations. The increase in acid or base concentration increased the size of pores and aggregated silica particles. The samples with pH ≤ 2.5 were transparent and attributed to the small size of pores (~20 Å) and silica particles. The samples with pH > 2.5 were translucent or opaque due to non-uniform pore system formed by voids and large aggregated silica particles. The surface area was found a key factor controlling the interactions between the gel matrix and the dye. The OS samples with the highest dye concentration exhibited the minimal values of pore size, surface area and silica particle size, resulting in the concentration-quenching phenomenon.

  • Transparent ceramics are used in new technology because of their excellent mechanical properties over glasses. Transparent ceramics are nowadays widely used in armor, laser windows, and in high temperature applications. Silicon nitride ceramics have excellent mechanical properties and if transparent silicon nitride is fabricated, it can be widely used. h-BN has a lubricating property and is ductile. Therefore, adding h-BN to silicon nitride ceramics gives a lubricating property and is also machinable. Translucent silicon nitride was fabricated by hot-press sintering (HPS) and 57% transmittance was observed in the near infrared region. A higher wt. % of h-BN in silicon nitride ceramics does not favor transparency. The optical, mechanical, and tribological properties of BN dispersed polycrystalline $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were affected by the density, ${\alpha}:{\beta}$-phase ratio, and content of h-BN in sintered ceramics. The hot pressed samples were prepared from the mixture of $\alpha-Si_3N_4$, AlN, MgO, and h-BN at $1850^{\circ}C$. The composite contained from 0.25 to 2 wt. % BN powder with sintering aids (9% AlN + 3% MgO). A maximum transmittance of 57% was achieved for the 0.25 wt. % BN doped $Si_3N_4$ ceramics. Fracture toughness increased and wear volume and the friction coefficient decreased with an increase in BN content. The properties such as transmittance, density, hardness, and flexural strength decreased with an increase in content of h-BN in silicon nitride ceramics.

  • The purpose of our study is to evaluate the ability of nickel-titanium(NiTi) files in maintaining the original curvature of a curved root canal during canal preparation. Curved canals on translucent resin blocks were prepared with Profiles and stainless steel files and they were placed at the platform which can reproduce the same position. The unprepared and prepared canal forms were accurately compared by double exposure technique of photography. The results were as follows : 1 NiTi files made a canal comparatively taper, but stainless steel files didn't make a canal taper, wicest at midportion and comparatively wide at a apical portion. 2. Canals preparations with no. 25 Profile.06 up to the working length were most excellent in taperness and in maintaining the original curvature. Canals prepared with no 30 Profile.06 up to the working length made a little outer transportation at a apical portion, but not severe. 3. Canal preparations with Profile GT were excellent in taperness and in maintaining the original curvature, but made more enlargement toward the inner side at the starting portion of the curvature. 4. Canal preparations with stainless steel files were not tapered and provided the largest transportation.

  • We characterized egg development and investigated the effects of temperature on embryonic development time, in the convict cichlid Amatitlania nigrofasciata. Fertilized eggs of this species have an ovoid shape (horizontal axis, $1.56{\pm}0.02mm$; vertical axis, $1.26{\pm}0.04mm$) and smooth translucent chorion surrounded by a layer of mucous secretion. At $27{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, the first cleavage, blastula, gastrula and 16-somite stages of A. nigrofasciata eggs began at 1.5, 4.83, 14 and 40 hours after fertilization, respectively. We measured the development rate of embryos at $12-33^{\circ}C$ and found that the time period from fertilization to hatching was 94 hours at $24^{\circ}C$, 64 hours at $27^{\circ}C$ and 50 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. At temperatures of $12-21^{\circ}C$, all fertilized eggs died before hatching and those incubated at $33^{\circ}C$ died immediately after hatching.

  • Background: A leaf cuticle has different structures and functions as a barrier to water loss and as protection from various environmental stressors. Methods: Leaves of Panax ginseng were examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to investigate the characteristics and development of the epicuticular structure. Results: Along the epidermal wall surface, the uniformly protuberant fine structure was on the adaxial surface of the cuticle. This epicuticular structure was highly wrinkled and radially extended to the marginal region of epidermal cells. The cuticle at the protuberant positions maintained the same thickness. The density of the wall matrix under the structures was also similar to that of the other wall region. By contrast, none of this structure was distributed on the abaxial surface, except in the region of the stoma. During the early developmental phase of the epicuticular structure, small vesicles appeared on wallecuticle interface in the peripheral wall of epidermal cells. Some electron-opaque vesicles adjacent to the cuticle were fused and formed the cuticle layer, whereas electron-translucent vesicles contacted each other and progressively increased in size within the epidermal wall. Conclusion: The outwardly projected cuticle and epidermal cell wall (i.e., an epicuticular wrinkle) acts as a major barrier to block out sunlight in ginseng leaves. The small vesicles in the peripheral region of epidermal cells may suppress the cuticle and parts of epidermal wall, push it upward, and consequently contribute to the formation of the epicuticular structure.

  • The pros and cons of green building thermal insulation materials and systems have been reviewed from traditional thermal insulation materials such as mineral wool and polyurethane to new thermal insulation materials like VIP and aerogel and future insulating VIM and DIM. VIPs and aerogels with very low thermal conductivity can use for green buildings to significantly increase residential area by reducing energy consumption. Aerogels can be produced as not only opaque and but also translucent forms, thus enabling a wide range of possible building application. For building applications, there are many properties to consider like building site adaptability and mechanical strength, fire protection, cost and environmental impact.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to identify the effects of the sintering conditions of dental zirconia on the grain size and translucency. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten specimens of each of two commercial brands of zirconia (Lava and KaVo) were made and sintered under five different conditions. Microwave sintering (MS) and conventional sintering (CS) methods were used to fabricate zirconia specimens. The dwelling time was 20 minutes for MS and 20 minutes, 2, 10, and 40 hours for CS. The density and the grain size of the sintered zirconia blocks were measured. Total transmission measurements were taken using a spectrophotometer. Two-way analysis of variance model was used for the analysis and performed at a type-one error rate of 0.05. RESULTS. There was no significant difference in density between brands and sintering conditions. The mean grain size increased according to sintering conditions as follows: MS-20 min, CS-20 min, CS-2 hr, CS-10 hr, and CS-40 hr for both brands. The mean grain size ranged from 347-1,512 nm for Lava and 373-1,481 nm for KaVo. The mean light transmittance values of Lava and KaVo were 28.39-34.48% and 28.09-30.50%, respectively. CONCLUSION. Different sintering conditions resulted in differences in grain size and light transmittance. To obtain more translucent dental zirconia restorations, shorter sintering times should be considered.
