  • The amplitude and phase lag of surface deformation were determined for a compliant coating under the action of turbulent pressure fluctuations. For this purpose, pressure fluctuations were measured experimentally. The amplitude and duration of coherent wave train of pressure fluctuations were investigated using digital filtration. The transient response was calculated for stabilization of forced oscillations of the coating in approximation of local deformation. The response of coating was analyzed with considerations of its inertial properties and limited duration of coherent harmonics action of pressure fluctuations. It is shown that a compliant coating interacts not with the whole spectrum of pressure fluctuations, but only with a frequency range near the first resonance. According to the analysis, with increasing elasticity modulus of the coating material E, deformation amplitude decreases as 1/E, and dimensionless velocity of the coating surface decreases as $1/\sqrt{E}$. For sufficiently hard coatings, deformation amplitude becomes smaller than the thickness of viscous sublayer, while surface velocity remains comparable to vertical velocity fluctuations of the flow.

  • Objective: This study reports the effects of Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules as a treatment for transient hypertension. Methods: Four patients experienced sudden blood pressure elevation without a history of hypertension treatment. There was no specific history of disease, as confirmed by laboratory examination and image diagnosis. The patients were treated with Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules and their blood pressure analyzed over time. Results: After treatment with Huanglianjiedu-tang granules, the mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of all patients decreased significantly. Conclusions: The study suggests that Huanglianjiedu-tang (黃連解毒湯) granules could be a primary treatment for hypertension. A well-designed study should be conducted for further evaluation of the effectiveness of the treatment.

  • We propose a transient evaluation scheme using a pressure measurement in a complicate pipeline systems. Conservation of mass and momentum equations in time domain can be transformed into a pressure head and flowrate relationship between upstream and downstream point in frequency domain. The impedance formulations were derived to address measured pressure at downstream to evaluate of flowrate or pressure head at any point of system. Both branched pipeline element and looped pipeline element can be generally addressed in the platform of the basic reservoir pipeline valve system. The convolution of time domain response function with measured pressure head from a downstream point provides flowrate or pressure head response in any point of the designated pipeline system. The proposed method was validated through comparison between traditional method of characteristics and the proposed method in several hypothetical systems.

  • A mathematical model for the prediction of carbon-dioxide absorption rate during the transient state of rotary type absorber is developed. The rotary type absorber operates using a fast rotating porous structure and clean water. The model for the transient state rotary type absorbers is based on the steady state model of packed tower absorber. The paper manipulates the operating data of an arbitrary quasi-steady state condition of rotary type absorber for the determination of the coefficients involved in the model developed. The prediction accuracy is evaluated from the measured data of rotary type absorber operated under fast transient state. The measured data include the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in mixed gas and the pressure of absorber. The relative error in carbon dioxide prediction is estimated to be 20% at maximum. The model is successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of a closed cycle diesel engine.

  • The current paper focuses the analysis of leakage detection in water pipeline systems by means of the transient method. In order to obtain essential data for evaluation the existing methodology, an extensive experimental process has been carried out in a single pipeline system, Several experimental tests were performed with and without a leakage in the system. Using the unsteady friction and improved unsteady friction factors gives reasonable match between the computed and measured results on the condition of the flow situations presented in the paper. The transient method attempts to estimate the leakage in water pipelines using observed pressure data collected during transient events on the system.

  • In the case of high-energy line breaks in nuclear power plants, supersonic steam jet is formed due to the rapid depressurization. The steam jet can cause impingement load on the adjacent structures, piping systems and components. In order to secure the design integrity of the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to evaluate the load characteristics of the steam jet generated by high-energy pipe rupture. In the design process of nuclear power plant, jet impingement load evaluation was usually performed based on ANSI/ANS 58.2. However, U.S. NRC recently pointed out that ANSI/ANS 58.2 oversimplifies the jet behavior and that some assumptions are non-conservative. In addition, it is recommended that dynamic analysis techniques should be applied to consider transient load characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an evaluation methodology that can analyze the dynamic load characteristics of steam jet ejected when high energy pipe breaks. This research group has developed and validated the CFD analysis methodology to evaluate the transient behavior of supersonic impinging jet in the previous study. In this study, numerical study on the transient load characteristics of supersonic steam jet impingement was carried out and amplitude and frequency analysis of transient jet load was performed.

  • A method for the control of pulsating pressure transients in the hydraulic brake system has been presented and experimentally verified. This control is accomplished by installing flow restricting devices at appropriate locations in the brake oil pipe line. The experimental results presented are expected to provide a basis for transient control design of hydraulic brake systems.

  • This paper describes a methodology for determination of representative CANDU feeder geometry and the pressure drops between inlet/outlet header and fuel channel in the primary loop. A code, MEDOC, was developed based on this methodology and helps perform a calculation of equivalent feeder geometry for a selected channel group on the basis of feeder geometry data (fluid volume, mass flow rate, loss factor) and given property data pressure, quality, density) at inlet/outlet header. The equivalent feeder geometry calculated based on this methodology will be useful fur the transient thermohydraulic analysis of the primary heat transport system for the CANDU heavy water-cooled pressure tube reactor.

  • An elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis was performed on the contacting teeth surfaces of involute spur gears. Kinematics of the gear and the pinion were taken into account to get accurate geometric clearances around the elastohydrodynamic lubrication region of the contacting teeth. Pressure and film thickness distribution for the whole contacting faces in lubricated condition at several time steps were obtained through the analysis. Besides the pressure spike at the outlet region, a representative phenomenon in elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime, the pressure at the inlet region was slightly higher than that of the center region. The film thickness of transient condition was thicker than that of steady condition.

  • The autoignition and subsequent flame propagation of initially nonpremixed turbulent system have been numerically analyzed. The unsteady flamelet modeling based on the RIF (Representative Interactive Flamelet) concept has been employed to account for the influences of turbulence on these essentially transient combustion processes. In this RIF approach, the partially premixed burning, diffusive combustion and formation of pollutants(NOx, soot) can be consistently modeled by utilizing the comprehensive chemical mechanism. To treat the spatially distributed inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate, the multiple RIFs are employed in the framework of EPFM(Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model) approach. Computations are made for the various initial conditions of pressure, temperature, and fuel composition. The present turbulent combustion model reasonably well predicts the essential features of autoignition process in the transient gaseous fuel jets injected into high pressure and temperature environment.
