  • Halogen lamp was applied to fabricate the selective emitter crystalline silicon solar cell. In selective emitter structure, the recombination of minority carriers is reduced with heavily doped emitter under metal grid, consequently improving the conversion efficiency. Laser selective emitter process which is recently used the most generally induces the damage on the silicon surface. However the lamp has enough heat to form heavily doped emitter layer by diffusing phosphorus from PSG without surface damage. In this work, we have studied to find the design and the suitable condition for halogen lamp such as power, time, temperature and figured out the possibility to fabricate the selective emitter silicon solar cell by lamp heating. The sheet resistance with $100{\Omega}/{\Box}$ was lower to $50{\Omega}/{\Box}$ after halogen lamp treatment. Heat transfer to lightly doped emitter region was blocked by using the shadow mask.

  • As the importance of three-dimensiona (3D) nano patterns and structures has recently emerged, interest in the study of 3D structures of block copolymers has increased. However, most existing studies on block copolymer 3D patterns on substrates are limited to simple 3D structures such as a multi-layered forms. In this study, we propose an experimental method for realizing free-standing 3D block copolymer patterns on substrates using an e-beam lithographic template and film transfer method. The block copolymer 3D structure formed in wide hole templates are similar to simple multi-layered structures; however, as the width of the hole template become narrower, more complex block copolymer 3D structures are formed in which the upper and lower layer structures are interconnected. Furthermore, we introduce a method to fabricate novel block copolymer structures in which the 2D planar structures are connected to 3D complex structures. Proposed 3D block copolymer fabrication method provides a framework for generation of unconventional 3D structures of block copolymer, which can be useful for next generation 3D devices.

  • The present study aims to investigate the flow characteristics with respect to fuel type and equivalence ratio in the flame spray coating process. The flame spray flow is characterized by much complex phenomena including combustion, turbulent flows, and combined heat transfer. The present study numerically simulated the flam spray process and examined the gas dynamics involving combustion, gas temperature and velocity distributions in flame spray process by using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of FLUENT (ver. 13.0). In particular, we studied the effect of fuel type and equivalence ratio on thermal and flow characteristics which could substantially affect the coating performance. From the results, it was found that the gas temperature distributions were varied with different fuels because of reaction times were different according to the fuel type. The equivalence ratio also could change the spatial flame distribution and the characteristics of coated layer on the substrate.

  • A fluorine-doped diamond-like carbon (F-DLC) stamp which has high contact angle, high UV-transmittance and sufficient hardness, was fabricated using the following direct etching method: F-DLC is deposited on a quartz substrate using DC and RF magnetron sputtering, PMMA is spin coated and patterned using e-beam lithography and finally, $O_2$ plasma etching is performed to transfer the line patterns having 100 nm line width, 100 nm line space and 70 nm line depth on F-DLC. The optimum fluorine concentration was determined after performing several pre-experiments. The stamp was applied successfully to UV-NIL without being coated with an anti-adhesion layer.

  • We constructed a biospecific affinity surface using hyper-branched dendrimers on gold for biospecific recognition, and characterized the resulting surfaces by using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The dendrimer monolayer was firstly constructed on the mercaptoundecanoic acid SAM/Au with pentafluorophenyl ester activation and further functionalized with sulfo-NHS-biotin, an activated ester of biotin. To confirm the formation of biospecific affinity surface, FITC(fluorescein isothiocyanate)-labeled avidin was loaded onto the biotinylated dendrimer monolayer, and fluorescence images of the bound avidins were investigated with a confocal microscope. The constructed biospecific affinity surface showed a much more dense and uniform fluorescence compared to those from poly-L-lysine- and cystamine SAM-based affinity surfaces. For the dependency on the concentration of added FITC-labeled avidin on the affinity surface, derived fluorescence could be detectable from as low as $1{\mu}g/ml$, and intensified up to $50{\mu}g/ml$. Further reaction of FITC-labeled avidin layer with TMR(tetramethylrhodamine)-biocytins resulted in the efficient FRET(fluorescence resonance energy transfer) phenomenon. As an extension of the study, we attempted a patterning of the affinity surfaces on gold by microcontact printing. Fluorescence of the patterned surface demonstrated that FITC-labeled avidin molecules were specifically bound to the biotinylated patches.

  • Some nano structured bimetallic NiPd electrocatalysts were electrodeposited on glassy carbon electrodes using a double potential step chronoamperometry. The morphology of the electrodeposited samples was investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, while their compositions were evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It was observed that the electrodeposited samples contained a low Ni content, in the range of 0.80 - 7.10%. The electrodeposited samples were employed as the anode electro-catalysts for the oxidation of sodium borohydride in NaOH solution (1.0 M) using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, rotating disk electrode, and impedance spectroscopy. The number of exchanged electrons, charge transfer resistances, apparent rate constants, and double layer capacitances were calculated for the oxidation of borohydride on the prepared catalysts. According to the results obtained, the NiPd-2 sample with the lowest Ni content (0.80%), presented the highest catalytic activity for borohydride oxidation compared with the other NiPd samples as well as the pure Pd sample. The anodic peak current density was obtained to be about 1.3 times higher on the NiPd-2 sample compared with that for the Pd sample.

  • The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral points and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the piles capacities.

  • The electronic structures of Al/RbF/tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminium ($Alq_3$) and $Al/CaF_2/Alq_3$interfaces were investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). For both systems, the UPS showed a significant valence band shift following the deposition of the thin fluoride layers on $Alq_3$. However, the formation of gap state in valence region and the extra peak N 1s core level spectra showed different trends, suggesting that the alkali fluoride and alkali-earth fluoride interlayer have different reaction mechanisms at the interface between Al cathode and $Alq_3$. In addition, the deposition of Al has considerably less effect on the valence band shift compared to the deposition of both RbF and $CaF_2$. These results suggest that the charge transfer across the interface and the resulting gap state formation may have lesser effect on the enhancement of organic light-emitting device performance than the observed valence band shift, which is thought to lower the electron injection barrier.

  • The development of hydrogen vehicles has been actively progressed in the developed countries such as U. S., Japan and Germany. The most important technology of using hydrogen fuel is to develope a compatible storage tank with respect to the fossil fuel tank. Among many storage methods, the liquid hydrogen is the most desirable state because of the lowest volume and weight. The metal hydride tank is too heavy and the compressed hydrogen tank is too bulky. Because of these reasons, it is the principal purpose to analyze the theoretical heat transfer for designing and manufacturing an actual $LH_2$ tank. The insulation methods of the room between inner and outer vessel are non-vacuum, vacuum, vacuum with MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation). According to the results of the numerically calculated heat leak through the walls of the $LH_2$ tank, the vacuum insulated tank has 20 times and the MLI tank has 5616 times less heat leak than the non-vacuum tank.

  • We investigated the electrical properties of self-assembled (4,4'-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-thioacetylbenzene), which has been well known as a conducting molecule having possible application to molecular level negative differential resistance(NDR)[1]. Generally, the phenomenon of NDR can be characterized by the decreasing current with the increasing voltage[2]. To deposit the SAM layer onto gold electrode, we transfer the prefabricated nanopores into a 1mM self-assembly molecules in THF solution. Au(111) substrates were prepared by ion beam sputtering method of gold onto the silicon wafer. As a result, we measured the voltage-current properties and confirmed the negative differential resistance properties of self-assembled organic thin film and measured, using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM).
