A technical approach to design and carry out an experiment to determine the uptake of selected radionuclides in site-specific conditions in Kuwait was developed and successfully executed for developing a radioecological decision support system. The radionuclides from soil-to-plant transfer factors have been obtained for leafy and non-leafy vegetables, and root crops cultivated in Kuwait. Two types of vegetated soils were selected and spiked with high concentrations of three relatively short-lived selected radionuclides (85Sr, 134Cs, and 133Ba). The highest strontium and barium transfer factors were found in the order: leafy vegetables > root crops > non-leafy vegetables. The approximate range of radiocesium transfer factor was found to be low in all plant groups and was comparable to those reported elsewhere in different soil types of temperate and tropical environments. A strong negative correlation between the obtained transfer factors and the distribution coefficient of the radionuclide in soil was found. It is recommended to adopt the newly derived parameters for the sensitive areas in Kuwait and other Gulf countries instead of using the generic parameters, whenever dose calculation codes are used. This will help to more accurately assess and predict the end results of the committed effective dose equivalent through ingestion pathway.
The internal reflux effect on dialysis through the retentate phase of a countercurrently cross-flow rectangular module is investigated. Theoretical analysis of mass transfer in cross-flow devices with or without recycling is analogous to heat transfer in cross-flow heat exchangers. In contrast to a device without reflux, considerable mass transfer is achievable if cross-flow dialyzers are operated with reflux, which provides an increase in fluid velocity, resulting in a reduction in mass-transfer resistance. It is concluded that reflux can enhance mass transfer, especially for large flow rate and feed-concentration operated under high reflux ratio.

Reinforcement learning, which are also studied in the field of defense, face the problem of sample efficiency, which requires a large amount of data to train. Transfer learning has been introduced to address this problem, but its effectiveness is sometimes marginal because the model does not effectively leverage prior knowledge. In this study, we propose a stochastic initial state randomization(SISR) method to enable robust knowledge transfer that promote generalized and sufficient knowledge transfer. We developed a simulation environment involving a cooperative robot transportation task. Experimental results show that successful tasks are achieved when SISR is applied, while tasks fail when SISR is not applied. We also analyzed how the amount of state information collected by the agents changes with the application of SISR.

Graphene, as a single layer of $sp^2$-bonded carbon atoms packed into a 2D honeycomb crystal lattice, has attracted much attention due to its outstanding properties such as high carrier mobility, chemical stability, and optical transparency. In order to synthesize high quality graphene, transition metals, such as nickel and copper, have been widely employed as catalysts, which need transfer to desired substrates for various applications. However, the transfer steps inevitably induce defects, impurities, wrinkles, and cracks of graphene. Here, we report a facile transfer-free graphene synthesis method through nickel and carbon co-deposited layer, which does not require separately deposited catalytic nickel and carbon source layers. The 100 nm NiC layer was deposited on the top of $SiO_2/Si$ substrates by nickel and carbon co-deposition. When the sample was annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$, the carbon atoms diffused through the NiC layer and deposited on both sides of the layer to form graphene upon cooling. The remained NiC layer was removed by using nickel etchant, and graphene was then directly obtained on $SiO_2/Si$ without any transfer process. Raman spectroscopy was carried out to confirm the quality of resulted graphene layer. Raman spectra revealed that the resulted graphene was at high quality with low degree of $sp^3$-type structural defects. Furthermore, the Raman analysis results also demonstrated that gas flow ratio (Ar : $CH_4$) during the NiC deposition and annealing temperature significantly influence not only the number of graphene layers but also structural defects. This facile non-transfer process would consequently facilitate the future graphene research and industrial applications.

Objective: It is well known that fresh blastocyst transfer results in better pregnancy outcomes with a smaller number of transferred embryos compared with cleavage stage embryo transfer. However, in terms of frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer, only a few studies are available. We aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes of frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) with blastocysts. Methods: Retrospective analysis of FET cycles with blastocysts (B-FET) between Jan 2007 and June 2009 was performed. Age-matched FET cycles with cleavage stage embryos (C-FET) during the same period were collected as controls. A total of 58 B-FET cycles were compared with 172 C-FET cycles and also compared with those of post-thaw extended culture blastocysts from frozen pronuclear stage embryos (22 cycles). Results: There was no difference in the patient characteristics of each group. The embryos' survival rates after thawing were comparable (>90%) and there was no difference in the implantation rate or clinical and ongoing pregnancy rate among the three groups. Conclusion: In FET, blastocyst transfers may not present better pregnancy outcomes than cleavage stage embryo transfers. A further large-scale prospective study is needed.

Nuclear transfer (NT) techniques have advanced in the last years, and cloned animals have been produced by using somatic cells in several species including pig. However, it is difficult that the nuclear transfer porcine embryos development to blastocyst stage overcoming the cell block in vitro. Abnormal segregation of chromosomes in nuclear transferred embryos on genome activation stage bring about embryo degeneration, abnormal blastocyst, delayed and low embryo development. Thus, we are evaluated that the correlations of the frequency of embryo developmental rates and chromosome aberration in NT and In viかo fertilization (IVF) derived embryo. We are used for ear-skin-fibroblast cell in NT. If only karyotyping of embryonic cells are chromosomally abnormal, they may difficultly remain undetected. Then, we evaluate the chromosome aberrations, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with porcine chromosome 1 submetacentric specific DNA probe were excuted. In normal diploid cell nucleus, two hybridization signal was detected. In contrast, abnormal cell figured one or three over signals. The developmental rates of NT and IVF embryos were 55% vs 63%, 32% vs 33% and 13% vs 17% in 2 cell, 8 cell and blastocyst, respectively. When looking at the types of chromosome aberration, the detection of aneuploidy at Day 3 on the embryo culture. The percentage of chromosome aneuploidy of NT and IVF at 4-cell stage 40.0%, 31.3%, respectively. This result indicate that chromosomal abnormalities are associated with low developmental rate in porcine NT embryo. It is also suggest that abnormal porcine embryos produced by NT associated with lower implantation rate, increase abortion rate and production of abnormal fetuses.

In order to fabricate high-quality SiC substrates for power electronic devices, various single crystal growing methods were prepared. These include the physical vapor transport (PVT) and top seeded solution growth (TSSG) methods. All the suggested SiC growth methods generally use induction-heating furnaces. The temperature distribution in this system can be easily adjusted by changing the hot-zone design. Moreover, precise temperature control in the induction-heating furnace is favorably required to grow a high-quality crystal. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the heat transfer in these furnaces to grow SiC crystals. As the growth temperature of SiC crystals is very high, we evaluated the effect of radiation heat transfer on the temperature distribution in induction-heating furnaces. Based on our simulation results, a heat transfer strategy that controls the radiation heat transfer was suggested to obtain the optimal temperature distribution in the PVT and TSSG methods.
The present study was undertaken to find out possibilities for superovulation and recovery of freezable/transferable embryo from repeat breeding crossbred cows. For this study a total of 10 Holstein crossbred cows having history of failure of conception even after more than 4~5inseminations were taken and superovulated using Folltropin-V at 100 to 140% dose schedule. The results indicated that out of 10 donors, 8 responded to superovulatory treatment and yielding a total of 94 embryos, out of which 45 were of transferable/freezable quality. The mean ovulations and mean transferable embryos were 11.5$\pm$2.91 and 4.5$\pm$1.66, respectively. These observations suggests that the repeat breeding cows having conception failure after several artificial inseminations can be used as donors for production of embryos and calves through embryo transfer technology.

In this study, in-situ performance test of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of an air source heat pump which has a rating capacity of 20 RT is carried out. Since test conditions, such as indoor and outdoor air conditions cannot be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions, experiments are done with the inlet air conditions as they exist. From the experimental data, air side heat and mass transfer coefficients were calculated by the well known heat and mass transfer analogy and tube-by-tube method. Since current procedure underpredicted the experimental sensible heat factor (SHF), a proper empirical parameter was introduced to predict the experimental data with satisfactory results. This study provides the method of evaluating the heat and mass transfer coefficients of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of which in-situ performance test is necessary.
The nature of F electronic excitation energy transfer to OH- vibrational levels in KCl crystals is the exchange interaction, although the transfer process exhibits three temporally distinguishable components depending on the distance between excited F center and OH-. The critical distance as well as rate of the major energy transfer process in randomly distributed samples increases rapidly as OH- librational motions become active with temperature rise. The excited state character introduced into the OH- ground electronic state by perturbation is essential for the exchange interaction. The perturbation is brought about by the expanded electron cloud of excited F center for OH- associated to F center, whereas by librations and lattice vibrations perpendicular to the bond axis for isolated OH- . F excitation quenching efficiency by OH- is dependent on the variation of the critical distance rather than the rate as the rate is much faster than the normal F bleach recovery rate.
