The cultural identity of each nation has appeared as a major issue in this multi-cultural era, and needs to define It clearly through comparisons with other cultures have been raised. The purpose of this study is to figure out ‘similarity’ and ‘dissimilarity’ on design characteristics of traditional storage furniture in interior context of Korea, China and Japan. Comparative analysis of traditional furniture was conducted in two terms, in terms of inner space, first, spatial elevation and front patterns, second, flooring materials of the interior space and types of furniture legs. Result of first comparative analysis showed that composition of windows, one of the major decorative elements of interior space, positively influenced on furniture, and reflected unique patterns of each country. Second comparative analysis showed that structures and shapes of traditional furniture vary depending on flooring materials. As a result of it, Korean furniture has the structure of ‘punghyeol’ and Chinese furniture has the structure of ‘aja’ with ‘takni’ , a combination of legs. In contrast to the two countries, Japanese furniture has rarely legs. The result of analysis is expected to act a role of establishing the cultural identity of our own country.
This study focuses on comparative study of the representation of 'traditionality' in Asian hotel guest rooms. Hotel can be a concentration of the country's culture and tradition and provide unique experience to guests through its space, decoration, and material. However, most hotels in Korea are lack of a strong identity based on the Korean culture and tradition, due to adoptation of the western hotel styles without any criticism. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression methods of the traditionality in Asian hotel guest rooms to provide design guideline to enhance identity of hotel guest rooms in Korea. Through analysis of the previous researches, criteria of the three design application methods and the five design elements were defined to analyze the representation of the traditonality. Design application methods were categorized as "Original form", "Partial adoption", and "Metaphor". Five design elements include "Shape", "Material", "Color", "Object", and "Pattern". Thirty nine Asian hotels containing the traditional design elements were explored in the study. In result, design application methods in Korea used all three methods equally, while other Asian countries used mainly the Partial adoption and Metaphor methods to express their traditions rather than the Original form method. All five deign elements were mostly used in case of the Original form methods, and two or three elements among five elements were used for the Partial adoption and Metaphor methods. The traditional representation of hotel guest rooms in Korea, reflecting current thinking, living pattern and culture, will be a solution for the new hotel design as well as elevation of Korea's status to a higher level.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the expression characteristics of Chinese and Sichuan traditional culture at the modernized restaurants which sells Sichuan food focusing on the Chengdu area. In terms of research methods, 12 selected Sichuan restaurants were visited from January 26th to February 1st, 2013 for the investigation research. The expression methods of traditional culture were divided into traditional reproduction, traditional transformation and traditional reinterpretation. The study results were as follows. First, in the external space components, facade has brought the Chinese and Sichuan local tradition as original or applied negative transformation like the replacement of the materials even though it is modernized. Secondly, in terms of the components of the internal space, as for the ceiling, the Chinese traditional culture transformed or reinterpreted the traditional ceiling structure, with which the culture was expressed indirectly. Thirdly, in terms of the decoration elements in the interior space, as for the furniture, various methods like the reproduction, transformation and reinterpretation of the Chinese traditional furniture were employed but there was none furniture which included the Sichuan local traditional culture. In a short, both of Chinese and Sichuan local traditional cultures were used as they were or transformed diversely or expressed colorfully.
This study investigated users' perceptions and attitudes toward Korean traditional elements in contemporary spaces. We collected and analyzed the article contents of two design magazines, from their issues of January 2000 through December 2009, for a total of 87 cases. The results were as follows. First, the important motives for applying traditional elements to current living spaces were individual tastes, preference for a secluded life, and the users' childhood memories. Second, the most frequently used traditional element was traditional structure. Others were traditional spatial compositions and the use of natural materials. The two main purposes for renovating a space or constructing a building were to preserve traditional ambience or to add convenience and practical use to it. Third, the most frequently mentioned advantages of traditional elements were their environment-friendly characteristics, such as connecting to nature and using natural materials. Fourth, the users preferred, in order, Ma-dang, natural environments, doors/windows of various types and multiple functions, Toet-maru, Dae-cheong, and Nu-maru.
In this age of information ruled by new technologies and knowledge, the world is interconnected as a single community, and within this trend of globalization, new cultural codes are emerging through temporal fusion between the past and the present and spatial fusion between different regions and countries. In this situation, it seems meaningful to review Korean fusion foods and restaurants serving such foods, as well as to consider their future directions. Thus, the objective of the present study was to survey and analyze Korean fusion restaurants representing Korean culture not only in Korea, but also in foreign cities, and to identify the expression characteristics of such restaurants. Based on restaurants recommended in relevant magazines and on Internet sites, 18 spaces were selected, visited, and surveyed, in which tradition and modernism were well-mixed. Data on the shapes, materials, colors, and patterns of spatial elements and food-related elements, including photographs, were collected and analyzed. The results are as follows. Of the 18 restaurants, 13 (72%) showed temporal fusion in both spatial and food-related elements, 4 showed temporal fusion in spatial elements and cultural fusion in food-related elements, and 1 showed cultural fusion in both spatial and food-related elements. In general, the spaces were mainly designed with modern elements and partially with traditional elements (ceilings, windows, furniture, articles), and the fusion of food-related elements was made in diverse forms that included temporal fusion restructuring traditional menus contemporarily, and cultural fusion harmonizing traditional food with Western cookery.
The three basic elements of human life -clothing, food and shelter- had been evolved through different periods and cultural realms, as their spatial applications show distinct characteristics that are manifested through sensibilities only inherent to its specific culture. Especially in the interior spaces, possibilities to approach them in three-dimensional aspects allow formal characteristics to be expressed that are distinct to the country. Formal sensibilities embedded in interior space In Korea also follows such pattern, developed through various contemporary interpretations of Korean traditional formal sensibilities, including harmony with nature, simplicity, lightness, real and fake, and principle of harmony are being redefined by spatially expressed in contemporary language. That is, traditional formal sensibilitiesare filtered through various application methods such as composition, negotiation and modification, accommodating spatial manifestations to be not simply preserved nor replicated, but rather reconstructed through metaphor, symbol, abstraction and contrast. From this perspective, the Korean traditional formal sensibilitiesis not a notion fixed in the past, but a distinct perspectives evolving throughout periods of time that are constantly reconsidered and reinterpreted in our interior space. By examining Korean sensibilities manifested in interior space in the both diachronic aspects of tradition vs. contemporary, as well as synchronic aspects among various disciplines simultaneously, we would be able to generate a linkage to the dichotomous categories of tradition and contemporary.

This study aimed at get the understanding on traditional Korean architecture, space planning and furniture arrangement. As a result, the plan represent traditional Korean style including the space planning and furniture, the colors and patterns, and the building materials. The purpose of this study is to understand various styles of Korean house living, up to the present, to identify apartment living as the main house living, and plan and propose the interior unit spaces for apartment house based on the analysis on living space. A survey study was conducted to deduce the traditional major life style and its changes along with favorable housing spaces. In conclusion, this study proposed the unit space planning requirements that satisfies the conceptual and interior elements for habitant's characteristics and preference according to major life style as follow; 1) As the Ahn-bang(master bed room) has been changed from traditional space concept, it is mainly used as private space for husband and wife, and its utilized period is mostly at night time, the back-arrangement of the Ahn-bang should be considered. 2) As the living room is central space in the apartment housing and has complex functions which is utilized as space for family gathering and guest reception similar to the Ahn-bang of the traditional house, it should secure more space and it is desirable to arrange the space as open type by combining the pathway area. 3) As for the kitchen/dining room, the kitchen should be isolated from external attraction and the space for storing and preparing traditional foods should also considered, and the dining room should be arranged as open type. This study also suggests that since the apartment housing must be an integrated environment for habitants which satisfy behavioral, physical and mental elements simultaneously, the unit housing space should be constantly analyzed in various ways to produce a housing space which meet both their changing major life style and the temporal environment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate expression characteristics of korean traditionality in restaurants & Ccfes which adapted thatched roof & shingle-roofed house. As a method of this study, a case study was made to investigate for exterior and interior elements(roof type, facade, floor, wall, ceiling, door & window) of 12 restaurants & cafes in Seoul and Kyunggi Province from June 10, 2013 to December 1, 2013. The results of this study were as follows: First, traditional transformation was mostly used among the traditional expression methods. But, there was not many traditional reinterpretation method. Second, looking at each component, traditional reproduction method mostly used for roof, column and ceiling to emphasize facade. Traditional transformation method can be divided into 3 ways in detail. The first method is mixing materials of modern and traditional, and the second one is transforming traditional material and combining this with modern one. The third is removing traditional material completely and transforming totally into modern materials. Third, traditional high quality noble houses are found in luxurious Korean restaurants and luxurious cafes while common houses are found in local food restaurant and cafes. It is because traditional common houses are still considered as low quality of design and it may prevent common houses from becoming high quality of design.
The purpose of this study is to examine expression characteristics of Koreanity of indoor spaces and food-related elements in Korean restaurants that preserve Korean cultural identity and to acquire basic datas for total design planning that integrates not only spaces but also food-related design elements including food, tableware, table setting and food styling. For these purposes, we selected 18 Korean restaurants showing Koreanity based on related magazines issued during the period from 2000 to 2005 and Internet sites related food. The survey method is to investigate the selected restaurants visited in person, and the intangible and tangible characteristics of their indoor spaces and food-related elements were recorded in detail, photographed and analyzed. The results of study is as follows: First, among intangible elements, the most frequent one in space was formative aesthetic characteristic(60%), and that in food is socio-cultural characteristic(60%). Second, as to Koreanity expression methods through tangible elements, the most frequent method for space was the use of contemporary elements as mains and traditional elements as supplements (11cases) and that in food is compromise between traditional food and contemporary recomposition (16cases). In order to develop competitive Korean restaurants in the global age, we need to create stories based on various intangible elements found in our indigenous culture beyond fixed traditional designs from the past and to produce total designs of food space design and table settings through consistent concepts.
