Gear rattle is a source of vibration and noise in automotive gearbox casing and generally occurs at or near system resonant frequencies. The neutral gear rattle of the gearbox. is affected by the stiffness and hysteresis torque in the clutch disk and drag torque determining balancing point of the clutch disk operating range. The experiment is carried out in the pre-damper type clutch and a manual transmission of a automobile equipped for inline four-sylinder four-cycle 1.5L MPI engine and the computer simulation is executed by 5th order Runge-Kutta method. The results of the simulation analysis and experimental studies show the dynamic behavior of clutch and a phenomenon of the neutral gear rattle with respect to drag torque and torsional characteristics of the clutch.
The analysis of static and dynamic characteristics of reinforced roadbed materials was performed through model and laboratory tests. The strength characteristic of reinforced roadbed materials such as HMS-25 and soil were investigated through the unconfined axial compression test, the model soil box test and the combined resonant column and torsional shear test. The unconfined axial compression strength of HMS-25 shows a steady increasement in strength due to the chemical hardening reaction between HMS-25 and water. The result of model soil box test reveals that railroad roadbed of HMS-25 is better than that of soil in several aspects, such as, bearing capacity and settlement. The combined resonant column and torsional shear test result indicates that shear modulus of HMS-25 and soil increase with the power of 0.5 to the confining pressure and linear relationship to normalized shear modulus and damping ratio.

Rattle noise occurs at manual transmission as idling and driving of a automotive. It can be solved by torsional characteristics of a clutch disc. A clutch disc consist of a region of pre-damper and main-damper. Rattle noise is affected by pre-damper and main-damper equipped for a torsional spring and friction washer. Pre-damper range covers noise radiating from manual transmission when engine is idling and main-damper range covers noise when engine is driving. The aim of this reserch is to clear transmission rattle noise by way of torsional characteristics of a clutch disc. The experiment is carried out as idling and driving of a automobile equipped for 1.5L MPI engine, dry single-disc type clutch and manual transmission. In this study, the results show for a vibration of manual transmission as idling and driving can be cleared by a clutch disc of Pre-damper type.

Torsional oscillations of the mechanical drivetrain in electric vehicles are generated under rapid driving conditions. These lead to an uncomfortable jerking of the vehicle and to an increased stress of the mechanical components. To analyze this phenomenon, a drivetrain model is constructed with lumped parameters. The model parameters are identified by geometrical design data and experimental tests. The proposed model is validated by simulation and experimental tests in the time and the frequency domains. As a result, the torsional oscillations are observed at 7Hz of a low damped natural frequency. Also, the analysis of the effect of the parameter variations on the oscillations shows that the oscillation characteristic is mainly dependent on the rotor inertia, and the stiffness of the mounting of the drive aggregate and the driveshaft. The results will be utilized on the basis of the design of an electric drivetrain and an active control of drivetrain oscillations.
In the case of the superstructure which is consist of two I girders and slab, the section can behave as II section, so that the neutral axis with respect to out of plane direction flexure can be regarded as major axis. Therefore in-plane flexural mode might govern the free vibration mode. Meanwhile, horizontally curved girders always experience not only bending moments but also torsional moments although the primary load is usually supposed to be gravitational load. The interaction due to bending and torsional moments make the behavior complicated and torsional mode may govern the free vibration mode. In other words, structure can have different dynamic characteristic due to its initial curvature. In this research, using 3-dimensional sell elements, free-vibration analyses are carried out due to initial curvature. The analysis models are assumed to be composite and non-composite and finally natural frequency and eigen mode are discussed.

The shipbuilder's requirement for a higher power output rating has led to the development of a super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. Usually a large-sized bore engine ranging from $8{\sim}14$ cylinders, this engine group is capable of delivering power output of more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating(mcr). Other positive aspects of this engine type include higher thermal efficiency, reliability, durability and mobility. This plays a vital role in meeting the propulsion requirement of vessels, specifically for large container ships, of which speed is a primary concern to become more competitive. Consequently, this also resulted in the modification of engine parameters and new component designs to meet the consequential higher mean effective pressure and higher maximum combustion pressure. Even though the fundamental excitation mechanisms unchanged, torsional vibration stresses in the propulsion shafting are subsequently perceived to be higher. As such, one important viewpoint in the initial engine design is the resulting vibration characteristic expected to prevail on the propulsion shafting system(PSS). This paper investigated the torsional vibration characteristics of these super large engines. For the two node torsional vibration with a nodal point on the crankshaft, a tuning damper is necessary to reduce the torsional stresses on the crankshaft. Hence, the tuning torsional vibration damper design and compatibility to the shafting system was similarly reviewed and analyzed.
The elastic seismic response of plan-asymmetric multi storey steel-frame buildings is investigated under earthquake loading with particular emphasis on forward-rupture directivity and fling records. Three asymmetric building systems are generated with different torsional stiffness and varying static eccentricity. The structural characteristic of these systems are designed according to UBC 97 code and their seismic responses subjected to a set of earthquake records are obtained from the response history analysis (RHA) as well as the linear static analysis (LSA). It is shown that, the elastic torsional response is influenced by the intensity of near-fault ground motions with different energy contents. In the extreme case of very strong earthquakes, the behaviour of torsionally stiff buildings and torsionally flexible buildings may differ substantially due to the fact that the displacement envelope of the deck depends on ground motion characteristics.
This paper is focused on the torsional effects that are induced on bridge piers by unbalanced wind buffeting on the deck during double cantilever erection stages. The case of decks with variable cross section is considered in particular as this characteristic is typical of most frame bridges that are built by the cantilever method. The procedure outlined in the paper is basically an application of the method that Dyrbye and Hansen (1996) have illustrated for decks with constant cross section. This format was chosen because it is suitable for design purposes and may easily be implemented in structural codes. As a complement, the correspondence with the format that is adopted in the Canadian code (NBCC 1990) for the gust factor is established, which might be useful to bridge designers used to the North-American approach to the gust effects on structures. Only alongwind turbulence and horizontal movements of the deck are considered. The combination of torsional and bending effects is also discussed and it is illustrated with an example of application.

Experiments are performed to determine the dependence of torsional rigidity upon the cross-sectional area for specimens of dense polyurethane foam. Testing equipment was designed and fabricated in the laboratory to satisfy the experimental characteristics. Results show the increase of torsional rigidity compared to the expected value based on the conventional elasticity. And this can be explained that the consideration of the internal motions of constitutive particles predicts the elastic behavior of the material better.
