  • Machining error makes the uncertainty of dimensional accuracy of the kinematic structure of a parallel robot system, which makes the uncertainty of kinematic accuracy of the end-effector of the parallel robot system. In this paper, the tendency of trajectory tracking error caused by the tolerance of design parameters of the parallel robot is analyzed. For this purpose, all the position errors are analyzed as the manipulator is moved on the target trajectory. X, Y, Z components of the trajectory errors are analyzed respectively, as well as resultant errors, which give the designer of the manipulator the intuitive and deep understanding on the effects of each design parameter to the trajectory tracking errors caused by the uncertainty of dimensional accuracy. The research results shows which design parameters are critically sensitive to the trajectory tracking error and the tendency of the trajectory tracking error caused by them.

  • A dynamic analysis using a hybrid finite element method was performed to characterize the effects of a number of manufacturing errors on bearing forces and critical tooth stress in the elements of a planetary gear system. Some tolerance control guidelines for managing bearing forces and critical stress are deduced from the results. The carrier indexing error for the planet assembly and planet runout error are the most critical factors in reducing the planet bearing force and maximizing load sharing, as well as in reducing the critical stress.

  • UVO-Multiband Polarizing Imager System (UVOMPIS) is an ultraviolet to visible light multi-wavelength polarization/imaging system for Compact Advanced Satellite. We developed Linear Astigmatism Free-Three Mirror System (LAF-TMS) D200F2 as an optical system of UVOMPIS which has an entrance pupil diameter of 200 mm, a focal ratio of 2, a field of view of 2° × 4°. LAF-TMS is a confocal off-axis reflecting telescope system that removes linear astigmatism, and its all mirrors (M1, M2, M3) are optimized with the freeform surface to reduce high-order aberrations. Through the sensitivity analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation as the tolerance analysis, we can confirm the feasibility of the system, relatively sensitive parameters (tilt, decenter, despace, surface RMS error), and considerations for optomechanical design. From the sensitivity analysis, we can discover the relatively sensitive optical alignment parameters to a single perturbation. Further more, in the monte-carlo simulation, we investigate the minimum tolerance budget satisfying the required optical performance and whether the tolerance range is satisfied within manufacturing error.

  • In this paper, a novel full-aperture reflective null measuring method is proposed to detect the transmission wavefront of a conformal dome surface. An aspheric compensator is designed and placed behind the dome to reflect the aspheric testing wave back to the same path. To ensure the feasibility of this method, tolerance analysis is conducted, and guidance to assembly is given accordingly. The accuracy of this method is verified to be λ/30 (λ =3.39 μm) by Monte Carlo algorithm. In addition, the influence of different error factors, including the thickness error and decenter error of the dome, on the testing wavefront is analyzed. Simulation and experiment indicate that this method is practical and simple, and can measure the conformal domes precisely and comprehensively.

  • In this paper we wanted to implement a reliable ISDN PABX that could maintain the user's voice and data communication services, even when there might be an unexpected system error. In order to implement the fault-tolerance we made this ISDN PABX composed of an active and a standby side by duplicating the main control parts. Whenever a critical error occurs in the active side, it makes side exchange so that the standby side as anew active side continues to proceed the currently active voice or data services. Finally, through the performance evaluation we proved that user's voice or data communication can be serviced without any sense in spite of an system error.

  • In this paper, we propose a fault tolerance technique which enables embedded systems to run without interruption while its operating system and tasks fail. In order to improve reliability, the proposed scheme makes an embedded system run as a virtual machine on virtual machine monitor. It also prepares a contingency virtual machine at which periodical backups of the embedded system are saved. When an error occurs in the main virtual machine, the corresponding standby virtual machine takes a role of the main virtual machine and continues its operation. Especially such backups and switches of virtual machines are performed with minor performance degradation by manipulating page table entries in virtual machine monitor. By conducting performance evaluation studies, we show that the proposed scheme makes embedded system robust against errors while it does not degrade the performance of the system significantly.

  • In order to evaluate the relative significance of tolerance management of various elements in a VHS VTR tape transport system, the effect of geometric variations of the elements from standard design values on the tape traveling path is studied. The tape is modeled as a string and each element in the tape transport system is modeled as a cylinder whose radius, position vector and orientation vector are specified. An numerical algorithm is proposed to find the coordinates of tape entry points and tape exit points for the elements from which the tape traveling path can be completely described. By using the suggested algorithm, an error sensitivity analysis of tape traveling path due to the geometric variations of tape transport elements is performed for a particular model in the market and the elements demanding relatively strict tolerance management are identified.

  • Existing methods for blind identification of linear block codes without a candidate set are mainly built on the Gauss elimination process. However, the fault tolerance will fall short when the intercepted bit error rate (BER) is too high. To address this issue, we apply the reverse algebra approach and propose a novel "two-step-screening" algorithm by solving the linear error equations on the binary Galois field, or GF(2). In the first step, a recursive matrix partition is implemented to solve the system linear error equations where the coefficient matrix is constructed by the full codewords which come from the intercepted noisy bitstream. This process is repeated to derive all those possible parity-checks. In the second step, a check matrix constructed by the intercepted codewords is applied to find the correct parity-checks out of all possible parity-checks solutions. This novel "two-step-screening" algorithm can be used in different codes like Hamming codes, BCH codes, LDPC codes, and quasi-cyclic LDPC codes. The simulation results have shown that it can highly improve the fault tolerance ability compared to the existing Gauss elimination process-based algorithms.

  • This paper proposes a wheel-assembly automation system, which assembles a wheel into a hub of a vehicle hung to a moving hanger in a car manufacturing line. A macro-micro manipulator control strategy is introduced to increase the system bandwidth and tracking accuracy to ensure insertion tolerance. A camera is equipped at the newly designed wheel gripper, which is attached at the center of the end-effector of the macro-micro manipulator and is used to measure position error of the hub of the vehicle in real time. The redundancy problem in the macro-micro manipulator is solved without complicated calculation by assigning proper functions to each part so that the macro part tracks the velocity error while the micro part regulates the fine position error. Experimental results indicate that tracking error satisfies the insertion tolerance of assembly $({\pm}1mm)$, and thus it is verified that the proposed system can be applied to the wheel assembly task on a moving hanger in the manufacturing line.
