Clinical Observations of Abnormal Glucose Tolerance in Hyperthyroidism (갑상선(甲狀腺) 기능항진증(機能亢進症)에서의 당부하(糖負荷)에 대(對)한 임상적(臨床的) 관찰(觀察))

  • Plasma glucose levels before and after oral glucose administration have been compared in a group of 76 thyrotoxic subjects and a group of 8 normal control subjects in order to study the effect of glucose loading in thyrotoxicosis. Following were the results: 1. The mean fasting plasma glucose level was elevated in the thyrotoxic group(95.5mg%) compared to normal control group (88mg%). 2. The peak of glucose tolerance curve is at 30 minutes after glucose administration in both groups, but its mean value was 44mg% higher in thyrotoxic group than in control group. 3. The plasma glucose levels returned towards the fasting level in the later stage of the test more rapidly in thyrotoxic group than in control group. 4. 69.6% of oral glucose tolerance tests were impaired in the thyrotoxic group, and the occurance of abnormal glucose tolerance could be related to the degree of thyrotoxicity, sex and age. 5. The mechanisms of the impaired glucose tolerance in thyrotoxicosis are thought to be related to an increased rate of glucose absorption from gastrointestinal tract, abnormal liver function with decreased hepatic glycogenesis, increased glucose oxidation, decreased pancreatic release of insulin, and genetic relationship between diabetes and thyrotoxicosis.

Response Surface Approach to Integrated Optimization Modeling for Parameter and Tolerance Design (반응표면분석법을 이용한 모수 및 공차설계 통합모형)

  • Since the inception of off-line quality control, it has drawn a particular attention from research community and it has been implemented in a wide variety of industries mainly due to its extensive applicability to numerous real situations. Emphasizing design issues rather than control issues related to manufacturing processes, off-line quality control has been recognized as a cost-effective approach to quality improvement. It mainly consists of three design stages: system design, parameter design, and tolerance design which are implemented in a sequential manner. Utilizing experimental designs and optimization techniques, off-line quality control is aimed at achieving product performance insensitive to external noises by reducing process variability. In spite of its conceptual soundness and practical significance, however, off-line quality control has also been criticized to a great extent due to its heuristic nature of investigation. In addition, it has also been pointed out that the process optimization procedures are inefficient. To enhance the current practice of off-line quality control, this study proposes an integrated optimization model by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so called response surface methodology (RSM), and a tolerance - cost relationship.

OPRoS based Fault Tolerance Support for Reliability of Service Robots (서비스로봇의 신뢰성 향상을 위한 OPRoS 기반 Fault-tolerance 기법)

  • For commercial success of emerging service robots, the fault tolerant technology for system reliability and human safety is crucial. Traditionally fault tolerance methods have been implemented in application level. However, from our studies on the common design patterns in fault tolerance, we argue that a framework-based approach provides many benefits in providing reliability for system development. To demonstrate the benefits, we build a framework-based fault tolerant engine for OPRoS (Open Platform for Robotic Services) standards. The fault manager in framework provides a set of fault tolerant measures of detection, isolation, and recovery. The system integrators choose the appropriate fault handling tools by declaring XML configuration descriptors, considering the constraints of components and operating environment. By building a fault tolerant navigation application from the non-faulttolerant components, we demonstrate the usability and benefits of the proposed framework-based approach.

Fault-Tolerance Improvement of Real-Time Embedded System using Static Checkpointing (실시간 임베디드 시스템의 결함 허용성 개선을 위한 정적 체크포인팅 방안)

  • This paper deals with a scheme for fault-tolerance improvement of real-time embedded systems, which engages an equidistant checkpointing technique to tolerate transient errors. Transient errors are caused by transient faults which are the most significant type of fault in reliable computer systems. Transient faults are assumed to occur according to a Poisson process and to be detected in a non-concurrent manner (e.g., checked periodically). The probability of the successful real-time task completion in the presence of transient errors is derived with the consideration of the possible effects of the transient errors. Based on this, a condition under which inserting checkpoints improves the fault-tolerance of the system is introduced and an optimal equidistant checkpointing strategy that achieves the highest fault tolerance is presented.

  • A variable structure control (VSC) based model following control system that possesses fault detection and isolation (FDI) capability as well as fault tolerance property is proposed. The nonlinear part of the proposed control law. whose magnitude is determined by sliding variables, plays the role of suppressing fault effect. Thus, approximate fault reconstruction is also possible via the analysis of sliding variables. The proposed algorithm is applied to an active suspension system of pound vehicles to verify its applicability.

  • Fault tolerant control algorithm fer heteropolar magnetic bearings are presented. This fault tolerant control utilizes grouping of currents as C-cores in order to isolate magnetic fluxes. Hardware requirements to maintain fault tolerant control are reduced since decoupling chokes are not required in this control scheme.   • The OPRoS (Open Platform for Robotic Services) framework is proposed as an application runtime environment for service robot systems. For the successful deployment of the OPRoS framework, fault tolerance support is crucial on top of its basic functionalities of lifecycle, thread and connection management. In the previous work [1] on OPRoS fault tolerance supports, we presented a framework-based fault tolerance architecture. In this paper, we extend the architecture with component-based fault tolerance techniques, which can provide more simplicity and efficiency than the pure framework-based approach. This argument is especially true for fault detection, since most faults and failure can be defined when the system cannot meet the requirement of the application functions. Specifically, the paper applies two widely-used fault detection techniques to the OPRoS framework: 'bridge component' and 'process model' component techniques for fault detection. The application details and performance of the proposed techniques are demonstrated by the same application scenario in [1]. The combination of component-based techniques with the framework-based architecture would improve the reliability of robot systems using the OPRoS framework.

A Trifloxystrobin Fungicide Induces Systemic Tolerance to Abiotic Stresses

  • Trifloxystrobin is a strobilurin fungicide, which possesses broad spectrum control against fungal plant diseases. We demonstrated that pre-treating red pepper plants with trifloxystrobin resulted in increased plant growth and leaf chlorophyll content compared with those in control plants. Relative water content of the leaves and the survival rate of intact plants indicated that plants acquired systemic tolerance to drought stress following trifloxystrobin pre-treatment. The recovery rate by rehydration in the drought treated plant was better in those pre-treated with trifloxystrobin than that in water treated plants. Induced drought tolerance activity by trifloxystrobin was sustained for 25 days after initial application. The trifloxystrobin treated red pepper plants also had induced systemic tolerance to other abiotic stresses, such as frost, cold, and high temperature stresses. These findings suggest that applying the chemical fungicide trifloxystrobin induced systemic tolerance to certain abiotic stresses in red pepper plants.

Heterologous expression of the Arabidopsis DREB1A/CBF3 gene enhances drought and freezing tolerance in transgenic Lolium perenne plants

  • The dehydration-responsive element binding proteins (DREB1)/C-repeat (CRT) binding factors (CBF) function as transcription factors and play an important role in agricultural biotechnology and molecular biology studies of drought and freezing stress tolerance. We generated transgenic Lolium perenne plants containing the PCR-cloned Arabidopsis DREB1A/CBF3 gene (AtDREB1A/CBF3) to study the function of this gene construct in drought and freezing tolerance in a species of turfgrass. Compared to the control, AtDREB1A/CBF3 transgenic L. perenne plants showed enhanced drought and freezing stress tolerance. The activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) were higher in transgenic plants than in the non-transgenic plant control. These results demonstrate that the expression of the AtDREB1A/CBF3 gene in transgenic L. perenne plants enhanced drought and freezing tolerance and that the increased stress tolerance was associated with the increased activities of antioxidant enzymes. These results are relevant to stress biology and biotechnology studies of turfgrass.
