  • This paper presents a numerical study on the thermal characteristics of a milling process of titanium alloy with nanofluid minimum-quantity lubrication (MQL). The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach is introduced for establishing the numerical model for the nanofluid MQL milling process, and estimated temperatures for pure MQL and for nanofluid MQL using both hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and nanodiamond particles are compared with the temperatures measured by thermocouples in the titanium alloy workpiece. The estimated workpiece temperatures are similar to experimental ones, and the model is validated.

  • Statement of problem: Ti-alloy has been used widely since it was produced in the United States in 1947 because it has high biocompatibility and anticorrosive characteristics. Purpose: The pure titanium, however, was used limitedly due to insufficient mechanical charateristics and difficult manufacturing process. Our previous study was focused on the development of a new titanium alloy. In the previous study we found that the Ti-Ta-Nb alloy had better mechanical characteristics and similar anticorrosive characteristics to Ti-6Al-4V Material and methods: In this study, the cytotoxicity of the Ti-Ta-Nb alloy was evaluated by MTT assay using MSCs(Mesenchaimal stem cells) and L929 cells(fibroblast cell line). The biocompatibility of the Ti-Ta-Nb alloy was performed by inserting the alloy into the femur of the rabbits and observing the radiological and histological changes surrounding the alloy implant. Results: 1. In the cytotoxicity test using MSCs, the 60% survival rate was observed in pure titanium, 84% in Ti-6Al-4V alloy and 95% in Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy. 2. In the animal study, the serial follow-up of the radiographs showed no separation or migration revealing gradual bone ingrowth surrounding the implants. Similar radiographic results were obtained among three implant groups pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy. 3. In the histologic examination of the bone block containing the implants. the bone ingrowth was prominent around the implants with the lapse of time. There was no signs of any tissue rejection, degeneration, or inflammation. Active bone ingrowth was observed around the implants. In the comparison of the three groups, the rate of bone ingrowth was better in the Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy group than those in pure titanium group or Ti-6Al-4V alloy group. In conclusion, Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy revealed better biocompatibility in survival rate of the cells and bone ingrowth around the implants. Therefore we believe a newly developed Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy can replace currently used Ti-6Al-4V alloy to increase biocompatibility and to decrease side effects. Conclusion: In conclusion, Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy revealed better biocompatibility in survival rate of the cells and bone ingrowth around the implants. Therefore we believe a newly developed Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy can replace currently used Ti-6Al-4V alloy to increase biocompatibility and to decrease side effects.

  • Titanium used in industry has been widely applied for aerospace important parts and automobile important parts, etc. because the titanium is higher in strength compared to the steel and light in weight compared to the steel. This study is to investigate the effect of cutting tool cooling method and cutting time on the spindle speed and feed rate of vertical machining center as a parameter to find the rough cutting time in the medium speed cutting machining of the titanium alloy. It is found that the cutting machining heat are increased as the feed rate, cutting time and spindle speed are raised.

  • Titanium alloy for bio-medical applications have been developed to reduce the toxicity of alloying elements and avoid the stress-shielding effect which is caused by relatively high elastic modulus compared to bone. Ti-39Nb-6Zr (TNZ40) alloy of elastic modulus exhibits around 40 GPa in the case of beta single phase. However, the strength of this alloy is lower than the other types of titanium alloys. Many research found that adding oxygen to beta-titanium alloys is beneficial for improving the strength through solid solution strengthening. In this study, TNZ40 ingots with addition of O were prepared by an arc remelting process (Ti-39Nb-6Zr-0.16O (wt.%), Ti-39Nb-6Zr-0.26O (wt.%)). Thermo-mechanical processing (i.e., heat treatment, cold swaging and aging heat treatment) has been performed under various conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oxygen content and ω phase formation on microstructure and mechanical properties.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the surface contact and screw joint stability between screw and implant interface by use of sealer. The implants evaluated in this study were Steri-Oss futures(Hexlock $3.8D{\times}10mm$: Steri-Oss, Yorba Linda, CA), and Steri-Oss staight abutment. Titanium alloy screws were used to secure abutments to implants. The other titanium alloy screws applicating sealer(Impla-Seal, Implant Support Systems, Inc. Irvine, CA) were used to secure abutments to implants. In one another sample, 6kg of force was applied during simulated intraoral movements after abutment screws were secured to the implants with sealer. All samples were cross sectioned with sandpaper and polished with $0.1{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$. Then samples were recorded with an scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. In the case of titanium alloy screw, irregular contacts and relatively large gap were present at thread mating surface. Also abutment screw/implant interface demonstrate incomplete seating and only one surface contact of threads between implant and screw. 2. In the case of titanium alloy screw applecating sealer, sealer was present between implant and screw. Therefore implant and screw had relatively close and tight contact without the presence of large gap. 3. On the other hand, in the case of titanium alloy screw applicating sealer and dynamic loading of suprastructures, sealer was partially present between implant and screw. Conclusively, sealer fills voids, creating a barrier to moisture and bacteria. In addition, loading of suprastructures may change the situation and limit the indications for gap sealing.

  • Chemical agents such as minocycline (MC) and citric acid (CA) were suggested in the treatment of contaminated implant surface. In this study, MC-HCl treatment was performed to enhance surface characteristics of titanium alloy surface. The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics and the biocompatibility of Ti-6Al-4V surface treated by MC. Alpha-beta titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) samples were prepared and they were divided into 6 groups according to chemical concentration and treatment time. These groups include 1) group I, non-treated smooth titanium alloy; 2) group II, MC 1.5 mg/mL for 1 hour; 3) group III, MC 1.5 mg/mL for 24 hours; 4) group IV, MC 15 mg/mL for 10 minutes; 5) group V, MC 100 mg/mL for 5 minutes; 6) group VI, pH1 CA for 3 minutes. The analysis of the surface characteristics of MC-treated titanium alloy was executed using scanning electron microscopy, roughness test, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cell adhesion and MTT assay was done using MC3T3 cell. Titanium surfaces treated with MC indicated a more smoothened surface microstructure. For group II and III, the new peaks of rutile TiO2 were found. Group II and V have more basic group of Ti-OH form in XPS. In MTT assay, all MC-treated groups showed significantly higher cell viability compared to control. The surface roughness, crystal structure, surface hydrophilicity, cell viability of smooth titanium surface was improved by MC treatment. Compared with the control experiment and CA-treated group, smooth titanium surface treated with MC showed improved surface characteristics and cell biocompatibility.

  • Titanium requires special ceramic system for veneering. Low fusing dental ceramics with coefficients of thermal expansion matching that of titanium have been developed. The purpose of this study was determine the bond strengths between cast and noncast pure titanium and two commercial titanium porcelains, and to compare the results with a conventional nickel-chromium alloy-ceramic system. The bond strengths were determined using a 3-point flexure test. Three-point flexure specimens $25{\times}3{\times}0.5mm$ were prepared After removal of ${\alpha}-case$ layer, they were veneered with $8{\times}3{\times}1mm$ of ceramics at the center of the bar. Specimens were tested in a universal testing machine. Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The bond strengths between pure titanium and two commercial porcelains exceeded th lower limit of the bonding strength value in ISO 9693(25MPa). 2. There was no significant difference between cast and noncast titanium-porcelain bonds. 3. There was no significant difference between two commercial titanium porcelains. 4. The bond strengths of the titanium-porcelain systems ranged from 73% to 79% of that of the Ni-Cr-conventional porcelain system.
