  • As the mobile communication service is widely used, the demand for wireless repeaters is rapidly increasing because of the easiness of extending service areas. But a wireless repeater has a problem that the output of the transmit antenna is partially fed back to the receive antenna, which results in feedback interference. In this paper, we propose a new varable step-size LMS algorithm, which utilizes correlation between reference and error signals to adjust the step sizes, for cancelling the feedback interference signals in the WCDMA repeater under time-varying multi-path channels. The proposed algorithm was investigated through computer simualation by being applied to the time-varying channels. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed one is superior to the conventional ones in terms of cancelation perormance.

  • The sum-rate maximization rule can find an optimal user set that maximizes the sum capacity in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BCs), but the search space for finding the optimal user set becomes prohibitively large as the number of users increases. The proposed algorithm selects a user set of the largest effective channel norms based on statistical channel state information (CSI) for reducing the computational complexity, and uses Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for minimizing the interference between selected users in time-varying MIMO BCs.

  • The iterative usage of soft outputs increases the performance of digital radio receiver. The feedback of reliability information reduces the channel estimation errors and increases the performance of equalization. This paper investigates the turbo equalization techniques for wireless cellular systems over continuous time varying channel. Simulation results over a GSM channel were presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a time-varying modified minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector for the detection of higher data rate signals in a multirate asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system which is signaled in a fast Rayleigh fading channel. The interference viewed by a higher data rate symbol will be periodic due to the presence of a lower data rate symbol which spans multiple higher data rate symbols. The detection is carried out on the basis of a modified MMSE criterion which incorporates differential detection and the ratio of channel coefficients in two consecutive observation intervals inherently compensating the fast variation of the channel due to fading. The numerical results obtained by the MMSE detector with time-varying detection show around 3 dB (M=2) and 6 dB (M=4) performance improvement at a BER of $10^{-3}$ in the AWGN channel, while introducing more computational complexity than the MMSE detector without time-varying detection. At a higher $E_b/N_0$, the proposed scheme can achieve a BER of approximately $10^{-3}$ in the presence of fast channel variation which is an improvement over other schemes.

  • In this paper, an efficient beam tracking algorithm for a regularized zero-forcing (RZF) approach in slowly fading multiple-input and single-output (MISO) broadcast channels is considered. By modifying an RZF equation, an RZF beam tracking algorithm is proposed using matrix perturbation theory. The proposed algorithm utilizes both beams from the previous time step and channel difference (between the previous and current time steps) to calculate the RZF beams. The tracking performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in terms of the mean square error (MSE) between a tracking approach and an exact recomputing approach, and in terms of the additional MSE caused by the beam tracking error at the receiver. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm has almost the same performance as the exact recomputing approach in terms of the sum rate.

  • In this paper, we consider a source node that operates over a time varying channel with energy harvesting capability. The goal of the source is to maximize the average number of successfully delivered packets per time slot. The source is able to choose whether to transmit a packet or defer the transmission in each time slot. The decision which is chosen by the source depends on the channel information available and the length of the energy queue. We formulate the problem of finding the optimal policy as a Markovian decision problem. We show some properties of the value function that represents the discounted number of successfully delivered packets per time slot. We prove that the optimal policy is a threshold type policy depending on the state of the channel and the length of the energy queue. We also derive an upper bound for the average number of packets per time slots successfully received by the destination. We show using numerical results that this bound is a tight bound on the performance of the optimal policy. And we consider the case of time varying channel but without channel state information (CSI). Then, we study the impact of channel time varying nature and the availability of CSI. In this case, we show that the optimal policy is a greedy policy. The performance of this greedy policy is also calculated.

  • Fountain codes ensure reliability and robustness for time varying channels in wireless communication. In this paper, the concatenated fountain codes for AWGN and slow fading channels are investigated. Wireless system model, which includes the concatenated fountain code and modulation, is proposed. Maximum achievable rate is used for analyzing the performance of the system model for AWGN and fading channels. Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm is used for exploiting the soft information received at the decoder. Simulation results show that, concatenated fountain codes performs significantly better than that of a conventional Fountain codes with large packet lengths for higher Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) in slow fading channels.

  • Methods for symbol-by-symbol channel feedback and adaptation of symbol durations have been recently proposed. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the gain in error-constrained data throughput due to such an extremely rapid adaptation of symbol durations to fast-time-varying channels. The results show that a symbol-by-symbol adaptation can achieve a throughput gain by orders of magnitude over a frame-by-frame adaptation.

  • Purpose - Since China has been South Korea's biggest export destination, uncertainty shocks originating from it would influence South Korea's exports. This paper evaluates the effects of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to explore the transmission channels. Design/methodology - Incorporating endogeneities and nonlinearities, this study employs a quarterly time-varying parameters vector autoregressive model to investigate the relationships between China's economic policy uncertainty and Korea's exports, where the overparameterization due to time-varying specifications is overcome by a novel stochastic model specification search framework. According to previous theoretical studies, this paper assesses two channels, demand shock channel and exchange rate channel, through which foreign uncertainty affects Korea's exports. This paper identifies the primary drivers of Korea's aggregate exports and analyzes the rationales for the time-variant impacts of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to China. Findings - Our empirical results reveal that Korea's aggregate exports are less responsive to China's economic policy uncertainty shocks and significantly move together with global demand. In contrast, its bilateral exports to China are highly responsive in a negative and time-variant way. Moreover, Chinese investment is an important channel through which China's economic policy uncertainty affects Korea's exports to China after 2010. Further, the time-variant effects of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to China are related to changes in China's foreign trade policies, global economic conditions, and China's degree of economic freedom. Originality/value - Few previous studies touch the effects of external uncertainty shocks on South Korea's exports. This paper attempts to fill this gap and explicitly investigate the impacts of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports from a time-varying perspective. As Korea is an export-oriented economy, this study provides insights for the Korean government to understand the transmissions of external uncertainty better.

  • In discrete-time controlled system, sampling time is one of the critical parameters for control performance. It is useful to employ different sampling rates into the system considering the feasibility of measuring system or actuating system. The systems with the different sampling rates in their input and output channels are named multirate system. Even though the original continuous-time system is time-invariant, it is realized as time-varying state equation depending on multirate sampling mechanism. By means of the augmentation of the inputs and the outputs over one Period, the time-varying system equation can be constructed into the time-invariant equation. In this paper, an alternative time-invariant model is proposed, the design method and the stability of the LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) control scheme for the realization are presented. The realization is flexible to construct to the sampling rate variations, the closed-loop system is shown to be asymptotically stable even in the inter-sampling intervals and it has smaller computation in on-line control loop than the previous time-invariant realizations.
