In this paper, a new high resolution reflectometry scheme, time-frequency domain reflectometry(TFDR), isproposed to detect and estimate a fault in a transmission line. Traditional reflectometry methodologies have been achieved either in the time domain or in the frequency domain only. However, the TFDR can jump over the performance limits of the traditional reflectometry methodologies because the acquired signal is analyzed in time and frequency domain simultaneously. In the TFDR, the new reference signal and the novel TFDR algorithm are proposed for analyzing the acquired signal in the time-frequency domain. Because the reference signal of Gaussian envelop chirp signal is localized in the time and frequency domain simultaneously, it is suitable to the analysis in the time-frequency domain. In the proposed TFDR algorithm, the time-frequency distribution function and the normalized time-frequency cross correlation function are used to detect and estimate a fault in a transmission line. That algorithm is verified for real-world coaxial cables which are typical transmission line with different types of faults by the TFDR system composed of real instruments. The performance of the TFDR methodology is compared with that o( the commercial time domain reflectomeoy(TDR) experiments, so that concludes the TFDR methodology can detect and estimate the fault with smaller error than TDR methodology.

When a vibration data for a rotating machine such as a pump or a compressor is concerned, the frequency fluctuation of the energy contents at an instant time may provide useful information on understanding the vibration characteristics of the rotating machinery, rather than the averaged energy distribution along the frequency axis. Especially, when a periodic signal has different spectral contents, the approach to use the averaged frequency distribution, called the normal frequency analysis, may not be appropriate to extract vibration source characteristics of the structure. This paper introduces a way to analyze the signal based on an instant time. In order to evaluate the performance of the various approach, the investigatation compares three different algorithms which are frequently implemented in the instantaneous frequency analysis. Also for the noise effect embodied in the true signal, various cases for different SN ratio have been examined. The result shows that the noise level is crucial to evalute the instantaneous frequency analysis. In order to implement the instantaneous frequency analysis, the extraction of the relevant information from the measured signal should have the high S/N ratio, i, e., 40 dB or above.

Conventional Fourier analysis can give only limited information about the dynamic characteristics of nonstationary signals. Instead, time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal in detail. Several time-frequency analysis methods are compared for a typical acoustic emission burst generated during the impact between a ferrite ceramic and aluminum plate. This AE burst is inherently nonstationary and random containing many frequency contents, which leads to severe interference between cross terms in bilinear convolution type distributions. The smoothing and reassignment processes can improve the readability and resolution of the results. Spectrogram and scalogram of the AE burst are obtained and compared to get the characteristics information. Renyi entropies are computed for various bilinear time-frequency transforms to evaluate the randomness. These bilinear transforms are reassigned by using the improved algorithm in discrete computation.

Recently, advance signal analysis which is called "Time-Frequency Analysis" has been developed. Wavelet and Wigner Distribution are used to the method. Wavelet transform(WT) is applied to time-frequency analysis of waveforms obtained by an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The Gabor function is adopted as the analyzing wavelet. Wavelet analysis method is an attractive technique for evolution of material characterization evoluation. In this paper, the feasibility of suppression of ultrasonic background noise signal using WT has been presented. These results suggest that ultrasonic background noise ginal can be suppressed and enhanced even for SNR of 20.8 dB. This property of the WT is extremely useful for the detecting flaw echos embedded in background noise.und noise.
It is intended to retrieve the time history of displacement from measured acceleration signal. In this study, the word retrieving means reconstructing the time history of original displacement signal from already measured acceleration signal not just extracting various information using relevant signal processing techniques. Unlike extracting required information from the signal, there are not many options to apply to retrieve the time history of displacement signal, once the acceleration signal is measured and recorded with given sampling rate. There are two methods, in general, to convert measured acceleration signal into displacement signal. One is directly integrating the acceleration signal in time domain. The other is dividing the Fourier transformed acceleration signal by the scale factor of - $\omega$$^2$and taking the inverse Fourier transform of it. It turned out both the methods produced a significant amount of errors depending on the sampling resolution in time and frequency domain when digitizing the acceleration signals. A simple and effective way to convert the time history of acceleration signal into the time history of displacement signal without significant errors is studied here with the analysis on the errors involved in the conversion process.

In this paper, time-frequency analysis using wavelet packet transform and advanced-MDSA (Multiple Dimensional Spectral Analysis) which based on wavelet packet transform is applied fur fault source identification and diagnosis of early detection of fault non-stationary sound/vibration signals. This method is analyzing the signal in the plane of instantaneous time and instantaneous frequency. The results of ordinary coherence function, which obtained by wavelet packet analysis, showed the possibility of early fault detection by analysis at the instantaneous time. So, by checking the coherence function trend, it is possible to detect which signal contains the major fault signal and to know how much the system is damaged. Finally, It is impossible to monitor the system is damaged or undamaged by using conventional method, because crest factor is almost constant under the range of magnitude of fault signal as its approach to normal signal. However instantaneous coherence function showed that a little change of fault signal is possible to monitor the system condition. And it is possible to predict the maintenance time by condition based maintenance for any stationary or non-stationary signals.

Wavelet transform has localization for time or frequency. It is useful to analyze a nonstationary signal. Basic function on wavelet transform is generated dilating and translating the original wavelet(mother wavelet). In this paper, time-frequency analysis method using linear combination wavelet transform is proposed. And it is applied to diagnostic monitoring system using the proposed linear combination wavelet transform. The stationary and nonstationary signal is used linear chirp signal, fan noise signal, a sinusoid signal from revolution body, electronic signal. Transform applied to signal analysis use fast Fourier transform (FFT), Daubechies, Haar and proposed linear combination method. The result of time-frequency analysis using linear combination wavelet transform is suited for portraying nonstationary time signal as well as stationary signal. Also the diagnostic monitoring system carry out the effective the signal analysis.

Frequency spectrum using the conventional Fourier analysis gives adequate information about the dynamic characteristics of the slider air bearing for the linear and stationary cases. The intermittent contacts for the extremely low flying height, however, generate nonlinear and nonstationary vibration at the instant of contact. Nonlinear dynamic model should be developed to simulate the impulse response of the air bearing during slider-disk contact. Time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal. Several time-frequency analysis methods are employed and compared for the slider vibration signal caused by the impact against an artificially induced scratch on the disk. The representative Wigner-Ville distribution leads to the severe interference problem by cross terms even though it gives good resolution both in time and frequency. The smoothing process improves the interference problem at the expense of resolution. In order to get the results with good resolution and little interference, the reassignment method is proposed. Among others the reassigned Gabor spectrogram shows the best resolution and readability with negligible interference.
In the clinical environment, measurements of some characteristics of the skeletal muscle are currently used to assess the severity of a neuromuscular disease or in some cases to assist in making a diagnosis. But a quantitative method of evaluation has not yet been introduced satisfactorily. In this paper, the skeletal EMG(biceps muscle, masseter muscle) analysis has been processed both in the time and in the frequency domain by designing the digital signal processing system based on pentium PC and transputer (IMS 7805). The experiment have been performed in five normal subjects, and various parameters have been statistically tested and compare4 As a results, the effective parameters obtained for the evaluation of skeletal EMG electrical activity are turn analysis, MiTi, MiTa, IEMG, PDF in the time domain, and are mean frequency, median frequency, skewness, kurtosis, muscle fatigue slope in the frequency domain. The designed H/W and S/W in this study can be used effectively for the establishment of EMG data base and for clinical research.
Time-frequency representations are methods to display the magnitude or energy density of a signal on the two dimensional plane of both time and frequency. They are useful in analyzing the characteristics of time-varying signals. Music is a typical time-varying signal, and it can be analyzed by time-frequency representations. Recently, it is popular to change the sound quality by attaching a safety sounder to an instrument. It is performed to improve perception subjectively by spending little cost and modifying sound quality. In time domain, it is difficult to notify the difference between music signals with and without the sounder. But, it is easy to find the difference in frequency domain or in time-frequency domain. In this paper, the music signal from a flute with sounder is analyzed both in the frequency domain and in the time-frequency domain. It is confirmed that the frequency components in the mid-frequency range of 500~2500 are reinforced.
