Psychophysiologists are often interested in the EEG signals that accompany certain psychological events. When one is interested in a time series of event-related changes in EEG, one focuses on examining how the waveforms recorded at individual electrode sites vary over time across one or more experimental conditions. This is an analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs). In addition to such a classical EEG analysis in the time domain, the EEG measures can be investigated in the frequency domain. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that spectral analyses can often yield significant insight into the functional cognitive correlations of the signals. Therefore, this review paper tries to summarize essential concepts (e.g. phase-locking) and conventional methods (e.g. wavelet transformation) for understanding spectral analyses of brain oscillatory activity. Phase-coherence is also introduced in relation to functional connectivity of the brain.
This paper examined dynamic characteristics of high speed trains using a time varying frequency transform. Fourier transform based methods are frequently used for the calculation of the dynamic characteristics of trains in the frequency domain, but they cannot represent the time-varying characteristics. Therefore it is necessary to examine their characteristics using a time-varying frequency transform. For the examination, the non-stationary vibration of wheelset, bogie, and carbody are measured using accelerometers and stored in a data aquisition system. They are processed with localization of the data by modulating with a window function, and Fourier transform is taken to each localized data, called the short-time Fourier transform. From the processed results, time varying auto-spectral density, cross-spectral density, frequency response, and coherence functions have been calculated. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the time varying frequency transform is a useful method for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of high speed trains.
This paper investigated a method for classifying emotional states by using pulse wave signal. It focused on finding effective features for emotional state classification. The emptional states considered here consisted of interest and neutral. Classification experiments utilized 65 and 60 samples of interest and neutral states respectively. We have investigated 19 features derived from pulse wave signals by using both time domain and frequency domain analysis methods with 2 classifiers of minimum distance (normalized Euclidean distanece) and ${\kappa}$-Nearest Neighbour. The Leave-one-out cross validation was used as an evaluation mehtod. Based on experimental results, the most efficient features were a combination of 4 features consisting of (i) the mean of the first differences of the smoothed pulse rate time series signal, (ii) the mean of absolute values of the second differences of thel normalized interbeat intervals, (iii) the root mean square successive difference, and (iv) the power in high frequency range in normalized unit, which provided 80.8% average accuracy with ${\kappa}$-Nearest Neighbour classifier.
We design a 1$\times$4 optical splitter made of photonic crystal waveguides and analyze the properties of the optical splitter using the finite-difference time-domain method with perfectly-matched-layer absorbing boundaries. The photonic crystal is constructed from cylindrical rods in air on a square lattice. Our simulation results show that there are different transmission properties for four bend geometries and different incident-wave frequencies. The sum of the power transmission of the splitted light is over 93 percent at a certain geometry and frequency, and the incident power splits in the four arms with almost the same ratio.

The hydraulic acoustic attenuator fur an automotive active suspension system is so highly nonlinear and of high order that the analysis in time-domain has been performed quite little. In this paper, a state-space representation of the dynamics for a hydraulic attenuator was presented utilizing the electrical analogy. And the results of experiment were compared with those of simulation to validate the state-space model proposed. The comparison revealed that the state-space model proposed is practically applicable to estimate the dynamic responses of the hydraulic attenuator in time-domain.
This paper concerns the singular thermal stresses at the interface corner between the elastic fiber and the viscoelastic matrix of a two-dimensional unidirectional laminate model induced during cooling from cure temperature down to room temperature. Time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of residual thermal stresses at the interface. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface corner and such stress singularity might lead to local yielding or fiber-matrix debonding.

In this work, a new formulation is presented for analyzing the transient electromagnetic response from wire antennas using the time-domain integral equation. The solution method is based on the Galerkin's method that involves separate spatial and temporal testing procedures. Piecewise triangle basis functions have been used for spatial expansion functions for arbitrarily shaped wire structures. The time-domain variation is approximated by a set of orthonormal basis functions that are derived from the Laguerre polynomials. The method presented in this paper results in very stable transient responses from wire antennas.
This paper presents the nonlinear $H_{\infty}$ switching power system stabilizer (PSS) based on Lie group and Lie transformation theory. The proposed controller combines the $H_{\infty}$ switching controller and Lie theory. The proposed power system stabilizer (PSS) is used to improve the transient stability in the time-domain and to solve the problem associated with the inaccessible state variables by measuring only the angular velocity. In the simulation study, the different load conditions, fault periods, and fault locations are considered. The nonlinear time-domain simulation showed that the proposed controller was effective restoring transient stability in a one-machine infinite-bus power system.

In this paper, we present an accurate and stable method for the solution of the transient electromagnetic response from the conducting wire structures using the time domain integral equation. By using an implicit scheme with the central finite difference approximation for the time domain electric field integral equation, we obtain the transient response from a wire scatterer illuminated by a plane wave and a conducting wire antenna with an impressed voltage source. Also, we consider a wire above a 3-dimensional conducting object. Numerical results are presented, which show the validity of the presented methodology, and compared with a conventional method using backward finite difference approximation.

This paper expands a previously proposed optimized higher order (2, 4) finite-difference time-domain scheme (H(2, 4) scheme) for use with lossy material. A low dispersion error is obtained by introducing a weighting factor and two scaling factors. The weighting factor creates isotropic dispersion, and the two scaling factors dramatically reduce the numerical dispersion error at an operating frequency. In addition, the results confirm that the proposed scheme performs better than the H(2, 4) scheme for wideband analysis. Lastly, the validity of the proposed scheme is verified by calculating a scattering problem of a lossy circular dielectric cylinder.
