  • In this paper, we proposed a two-stage control of the container crane. The first stage control is time-optimal control for the purpose of fast trolley traveling. With suitable trolley velocity patterns, the sway which is generated during trolley moving is minimized. At the second stage control feedback control law is investigated for the quick suppression of residual vibration after the trolley motion. For more practical system, the container crane system is modeled as a partial differential equation (PDE) system with flexible cable. The dynamics of the cable is derived as a moving system with tension caused by payload using Hamilton's principle for the systems. A control law based upon the Lyapunov's method is derived. It is revealed that a time-varying control force and a suitable passive damping at the actuator can successfully suppress the transverse vibrations.

  • This paper presents the thermal analysis of EHV OF cable accessories using FEM. The governing equation about the temperature in the cable accessories is induced by the energy balance equation. Since the temperature distribution is a function of space and time, the weighted residual method is adopted for FEM formulation. The difference approximation is used to treat the time differential term in the element equation. Automatic mesh generation which save time and labor is introduced for the data input process. It will be expected that the following thermal analysis result will be very useful to cable accessories design.

  • Chaotic dynamics is an active research area in fields such as biology, physics, sociology, psychology, physiology, and engineering. Interest in chaos is also expanding to the social sciences, such as politics, economics, and societal events prediction. Most people pursue happiness, both spiritual and physical in many cases. However, happiness is not easy to define, because people differ in how they perceive it. Happiness can exist in mind and body. Therefore, we need to be happy in both simultaneously to achieve optimal happiness. To do this, we need to synchronize mind and body. In this paper, we propose a chaotic synchronization method in a mathematical model of happiness organized by a second-order ordinary differential equation with external force. This proposed mathematical happiness equation is similar to Duffing's equation, because it is derived from that equation. We introduce synchronization method from our mathematical happiness model by using the derived Duffing equation. To achieve chaotic synchronization between the human mind and body, we apply an idea of mind/body unity originating in Oriental philosophy. Of many chaotic synchronization methods, we use only coupled synchronization, because this method is closest to representing mind/body unity. Typically, coupled synchronization can be applied only to non-autonomous systems, such as a modified Duffing system. We represent the result of synchronization using a differential time series mind/body model.

  • This paper deals with dynamic behaviour analysis for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow control in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behaviour of the PIG is depending on the different Pressure between the rear and nose parts, which is generated by injected gas flow behind PIG's tail and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. To analyze the dynamic behaviour characteristics such as gas flow in pipeline, and the PIG's position and velocity, mathematical model is derived as two types of a nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equation for unsteady flow analysis of the PIG driving and expelled gas, and nonhomogeneous differential equation for dynamic analysis of PIG. The nonlinear equation is solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with the regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The Runge-Kuta method is used when we solve the steady flow equations to get initial flow values and the dynamic equation of PIG. The gas upstream and downstream of PIG are divided into a number of elements of equal length. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show us that the derived mathematical model and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of PIG with different operational conditions of pipeline.

  • As is shown in the paper, the Koltunov-Rzhanitsyn singular kernel of heredity (when constructing mathematical models of the dynamics problem of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity) adequately describes real mechanical processes, best approximates experimental data for a long period of time. A mathematical model of the problem of the flutter of viscoelastic plates moving in a gas with a high supersonic velocity is given. Using the Bubnov-Galerkin method, discrete models of the problem of the flatter of viscoelastic plates flowed over by supersonic gas flow are obtained. A numerical method is developed to solve nonlinear integro-differential equations (IDE) for the problem of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity with weakly singular kernels. A general computational algorithm and a system of application programs have been developed, which allow one to investigate the nonlinear dynamic problems of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity with weakly singular kernels. On the basis of the proposed numerical method and algorithm, nonlinear problems of the flutter of viscoelastic plates flowed over in a gas flow at an arbitrary angle are investigated. In a wide range of changes in various parameters of the plate, the critical velocity of the flutter is determined. It is shown that the singularity parameter α affects not only the oscillations of viscoelastic systems, but the critical velocity of the flutter as well.

  • In this paper, the classical and non-classical boundary conditions effect on free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) size-dependent nanobeams are investigated by presenting a semi analytical differential transform method (DTM) for the first time. Three kinds of mathematical models, namely; power law (P-FGM), sigmoid (S-FGM) and Mori-Tanaka (MT-FGM) distribution are considered to describe the material properties in the thickness direction. The nonlocal Eringen theory takes into account the effect of small size, which enables the present model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanosensors and nanoactuators. Governing equations are derived through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying semi analytical differential transform method. The good agreement between the results of this article and those available in literature validated the presented approach. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of the several parameters such as small scale effects, spring constant factors, various material compositions and mode number on the normalized natural frequencies of the FG nanobeams in detail. It is explicitly shown that the vibration of FG nanobeams is significantly influenced by these effects. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for future analyses of FG nanobeams.

  • In this paper, Coriolis effect on vibration behavior of a rotating rectangular plate made of functionally graded (FG) materials under thermal loading has been investigated. The material properties of the FG plate are supposed to get changed in parallel with the thickness of the plate and the thermal properties of the material are assumed to be thermo-elastic. In this research, the effect of hub size, rotating speed and setting angle are considered. Governing equation of motion and the associated boundary conditions are obtained by Hamilton's principle. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to solve the governing differential equation with respect to cantilever boundary condition. The results were successfully verified with the published literatures. These results can be useful for designing rotary systems such as turbine blades. In this work, Coriolis and thermal effects are considered for the first time and GDQM method has been used in solving the equations of motion of a rotating FGM plate.

  • Unlike the wavelet neural network, since a mother wavelet layer of the self-recurrent wavelet neural network (SRWNN) is composed of self-feedback neurons, it has the ability to store past information of the wavelet. Therefore we propose the prediction method for the nonlinear chaotic time series model using a SRWNN. The SRWNN model is learned for the modeling of a function such that the inputs arc known values of the time series and the output is the value in the future. The parameters of the network are tuned to minimize the difference between the nonlinear mapping of the chaotic time series and the output of SRWNN using the gradient-descent method for the adaptive backpropagation algorithm. Through the computer simulations, we demonstrate the feasibility and the effectiveness of our method for the prediction of the logistic map and the Mackey-Glass delay-differential equation as a nonlinear chaotic time series.

  • The Lotka-McKendrick equation which describes the evolution of a single population under the phenomenological conditions is developed from the well-known Malthus’model. In this paper, we introduce the Lotka-McKendrick equation for the description of the dynamics of a population. We apply a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method in age-time domain to approximate the solution of the system. We provide some numerical results. It is experimentally shown that, when the mortality function is bounded, the scheme converges at the rate of $h^2$ in the case of piecewise linear polynomial space. It is also shown that the scheme converges at the rate of $h^{3/2}$ when the mortality function is unbounded.
