  • In a co-rotating scroll compressor, both scrolls rotate on their fixed axes contrary to the conventional orbiting type scroll machine. This implies fixed locations and directions of the gas pressure force and sealing force. Because the tilting moment is mainly caused by interplay between the resultant force of above forces and bearing reaction force, the variation during one cycle is relatively small. Under real operation, this moment is balanced by the restoring moment created by the reaction between the baseplate and thrust bearing or between the scroll tip and baseplate. If these reactions become too large, greater torque is required due to increased friction in addition to the wear of mating parts. Consequently, appropriate study and minimization of tilting moment is important in the design of scroll machines. In this study, taking into account of the small variation of tilting moment during one cycle, we minimize the moment and thrust bearing reaction force by a properly designed back pressure chamber. As a result, for both the driving and driven scrolls, the tilting moment and the reaction force of thrust bearing can be minimized. And the stability is improved for all cases.

  • The present paper theoretically investigates characteristics of moment balance of a tilting-pad thrust bearing. Pressure of lubricant film of the bearing was computed using tile finite element method, and average film temperature was estimated from the heat balance over a pad. From the investigation, it has been found that different two sets of tilt angles satisfy moment equilibrium of the pad about tile pivot for a given pivot location. The tilt angles converged depend upon initial tilt angles assumed. Quite different bearing performance, including load capacity, film thickness, and temperature, is shown to be obtained based on choice of the initial tilt angles.

  • This paper investigates the whirling, tilting and flying motion of a HDD spindle system supported by FDB experimentally. Experimental setup is built to measure the flying, whirling and tilting motion of the HDD spindle system, and three capacitance probes fixed on the xyz-micrometers measure the displacement of a HDD spindle system in the xyz-directions. This research shows that the tilting and whirling motion is mostly dependent on the centrifugal force and the gyroscopic moment due to the unbalanced mass of a HDD spindle. It also shows that the rotating HDD spindle starts to float to the equilibrium position in the z-direction until the weight of the rotating spindle is equal to the supporting pressure generated in the upper and lower thrust bearing.

  • In this paper, the steady-state performances analysis of a tilting pad gas bearing(TPGB) we analyzed by using finite element method for compressible Reynolds' equation. TPGB is used in a high-expansion-ratio expander running at a speed of 230,000 rpm. In order to solve the nonlinear finite element equations, the Newton-Raphson method is applied. The variations of the loading capacity, friction force and tilting angle of a single pad v.s. eccentricity direction of eccentricity and bearing number are investigated. The condition for the equilibrium of a pad, which is important for safe working of the bearing, is stated. The performances of the three pad bearing such as loading capacity, friction moment are predicted.

  • This paper presents an analytical method to investigate the stability of FDBs (fluid dynamic bearings) considering the tilting motion. The perturbed equations of motion are derived with respect to translational and tilting motion for the general rotor-bearing system with five degrees of freedom. The Reynolds equations and their perturbed equations are solved by using the FEM in order to calculate the pressure, load capacity, and the stiffness and damping coefficients. This research introduces the radius of gyration to the equations of notion in order to express the mass moment of interia with respect to the critical mass. Then the critical mass of FDBs is determined by solving the eigenvalue problem of the linear equations of motion. This research is numerically validated by comparing the stability chart of FDBs with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the direct integration of the equations of motion. This research shows that the tilting motion is one of the major design considerations to determine the stability of rotating system. It also shows that the stability of FDBs considering only translation is overestimated in comparison with the stability of FDBs considering both translational and tilting motion.

  • Tapered roller bearings are widely used in equipment where high combined thrust and radial loads are experienced. A certain amount of tilting between the tapered rollers and the races always occurs because of bending moment load conditions and shaft deflection. It is now well understood that a coherent elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film separates the rollers and races. In spite of extensive study on EHL problems for over half a century, relatively few studies have focused on the finite line contacts problem. This study presents a complete numerical analysis of the effects of roller tilting on the EHL characteristics in a tapered roller bearing. We systematically analyze this highly nonlinear problem using finite differences with fully non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. Detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes are presented under moderate loads and material parameters. A very small roller tilting significantly affects the pressure distributions and film shapes near both ends of the roller. Moreover, the effect of tilting on the EHL characteristics at the small end is much greater than that at the large end. Therefore, in designing optimum profiles for tapered roller bearings, the profile radius should be larger at the small end.

  • We investigated the "tilting" of the Universe, i.e., a non-Doppler origin of the dipole moment of the cosmic background radiation (CBR). Superhorizon-sized isocurvature, rotational and true vacuum bubble perturbations are considered. We show that the more natural way of the "tilting" the Universe is via the true vacuum bubble perturbation. Nevertheless, due to the small filling fraction of the bubbles of viable extended inflationary models, we find that the probability of the real occurrence in the Universe is quite insignificant.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to set the design direction of the lift chair's tilting seat for development. Background: Great attention has been shown to the development of senior friendly product, because of increasing elderly population rapidly in Korea. Therefore, we need to study on sit-to-stand(STS) motion of elderly systematically for developing lift chair that is one of senior friendly products. Method: In this study, we analyzed joint moment(knee, hip) and muscle activity (Erector spinae, Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis) on STS motion of elderly(female, 60~70: 7) and young people(female, 20~30: 7) using 3 dimension motion capture camera, force plate, wireless EMG. Results: The results of muscle activity showed a similar trend but the results of joint moment were a lot of differences between the young and the elderly. Conclusion: The results of knee joint moment suggest the angle(10~30deg)-adjustable seat that can be better than to find the optimal seat's angle. Application: The method and results of this study are expected to develop senior friendly product and verification as well as be available to various application.

  • To enhance aerodynamic efficiency of the Smart Un-manned Aerial Vehicle(SUAV) during the transition period, wingtip fence is attached at the end of wing. The application of wingtip fence is to reduce the effect of the separated flow caused by the nacelle on the wing especially when the tilting angle of nacelle is more than 30 degrees. To compare the effect of with and without wingtip fence, flow visualization and measurement of the aerodynamic coefficients using the pyramidal type external balance are done. Result of forces and moments measurement shows that the slope of lift coefficient is increased 18% and rolling moment of SUAV especially 60 & 90-degree tilting is changed in favorable manners with wingtip fence.
