This paper presents an experimental study on active control of self-excited vibration for a high speed turbomachinery. In order to suppress the self-excited vibration, it is necessary to actively control the air film pressure or the air film thickness. In this study, active pads are used to control the air film thickness. Active pads are supported by pivots containing piezoelectric actuators and their radial position can be actively controlled by applying voltage to the actuators. The transfer characteristics from actuator inputs to shaft vibration outputs are experimentally investigated. In a tilting-pad gas bearing (TPGB), a shaft is supported by the pressurized air film. Four gap sensors were used to measure the vibration of the shaft and PID was used in the feedback control of the shaft vibration. The experimental results show that the self-excited vibration of the rotor can be effectively suppressed if the PID controller gains are properly chosen. As a result we find that the feedback control is effective for suppressing the self-excited vibration of a rotor system using stack-type PZT actuators.
This paper presents the synchronous vibration control of a rotor system using an active air bearing(AAB). In order to suppress the synchronous vibration, it is necessary to actively control the air film pressure or the air film thickness. In this study, active pads are used to control the air film thickness. Active pads are supported by pivots containing piezoelectric actuators and their radial position can be actively controlled by applying voltage to the actuators. Thus, disturbances, i. e. various kinds of external force can cause shaft vibration as well as change of the air film thickness. The dynamic behavior of a rotary system supported by two tilting-pad gas bearings and its active stabilization using the tilting-pads as actuators are investigated numerically. The $\mu$ synthesis are applied to the AAB system with three pads, two of which contain piezoelectric actuators. To test the validity of the theoretical method, the performance of this control method is evaluated through experiments. The experimental results also show the effectiveness of the control system for suppressing the unbalanced response of the rigid modes.
In this paper, the slope of the footplate is adjusted to compensate for the centrifugal force with a series elastic actuator (SEA) attached to the Segway's body to improve the cornering characteristics during turning. To ensure Segway's driving safety in the curvature motion, it is necessary to compensate for the centripetal force by tilting the footplate to generate inward force from gravity. When the footplate is tilted under the control of SEA, the vertical load on both wheels has been changed accordingly. The frictional force of the wheel has been changed by the change of the vertical force, which requires adjustment of driving torque to keep the curvature trajectory. That is, the driving torque has been controlled to keep the curvature trajectory considering the frictional force caused by the turning motion. Four SEAs are attached to the footplate to control the slope of the footplate and the real curvature motion has been demonstrated to verify the effects of SEAs in the high- speed curvature motion.
In this paper, the vibration for actuators having lens module, confined to lateral and torsional directions of suspensions, is described by mathematically analyzing its suspension configuration and motion. In order to prove the accuracy of this result, it is compared to a finite element analysis. Also it is shown that modal frequencies can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical motion expressions.
Most turbo machines, which operate at high speeds, such as gas turbines, jet engines, pumps, and compressors are prone to perrturbing vibrations. The best vibration control method for rotors is to eliminate destabilizing factors. Careful balancing application of "more stable" oil-lubricated bearing, such as tilting pad bearings or use of anti-swirl devices in seals, are examplse of passive vibration control methods. the use of magnetic bearing is an active control method. An obvious advantage of active control is that it provides damping (or modifies system stiffness or other parameters) only when there is a need for that, i.e., in emergency states, while not affecting the rotor normal operational conditions. Moreover, active control methods provide exact position control through on-line control. In this study, a magnetic actuator, digital contrliier using DSP, and bipolar operational power supply/amplifiers were developed to show the effectiveness of reducing robot vibration. Also the curve fitting procedure to obtain the transfer function of frequency dependent component was developed. Results presented in this dissertation will provide a well-defined technical parameters in designing magnetic damper system.er system.
The purpose of this study is to design a flexural structure that has a function of pan and tilt for an artificial eyeball. The artificial eyeball system has a function of image stabilization, which compensate panning and tilting vibration of the body on which the artificial eyeball is attached. The target closed loop control bandwidth is 50Hz, so the mechanical resonance frequency is required to be more than the control bandwidth, which is a tough design problem because of a big mass of camera and actuator. In this study, the design process including the selection of the principal parameters by numerical analysis with ANSYS will be described, as well as the design results and frequency response.
We present the design and fabrication prcoess of a two-axis tilting micromirror device driven by the electrostatic vertical comb actuator. A high aspect-ratio comb actuator is fabricated by multiple DRIE process in order to achieve large scan angle. The proposed fabrication process enables a mirror to be fabricated on the wafer-scale. By bonding a double-side polished (DSP) wafer and a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer together, all actuators on the wafer are completely hidden under the reflectors. Nickel lines are embedded on a Pyrex wafer for the electrical access to numerous electrodes of mirrors. An anodic bonding step is implemented to contact electrical lines with ail electrodes on the wafer at a time. The mechanical angle of a fabricated mirror has been measured to be 1.9 degree and 1.6 degree, respectively, in the two orthogonal axes under driving voltages of 100 V. Also, a $8{\times}8$ array of micromirrors with high fill-factor of 70 % is fabricated by the same fabrication process.
This paper presents a micro-positioning platform based on the unique parallel mechanism recently developed by the authors. The platform has a meso-scale rectangular shape whose size is $20{\times}23m$. The stroke is 5 mm for both the x- and y-axis and 100 degrees for the ${\alpha}$-axis(the rotational axis along the x-axis). The platform is actuated by the three sets of two-stage linear actuators: a linear motor for rough positioning and a piezo actuator for fine positioning. The platform is already assembled. Experimental results of the positioning measurements and control performance are presented.
