Ti alloys are extensively used in high-technology application because of their strength, oxidation resistance at high temperature. However, Ti alloys tend to be classified very difficult to cut material. In this paper, The powder synthesis, spark plasma sintering (SPS), bulk material properties such as electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity are systematically examined on $Ti_2AlN$ and $Ti_2AlC$ materials having most light-weight and oxidation resistance among the MAX phases. The bulk samples mainly consisted of $Ti_2AlN$ and $Ti_2AlC$ materials with density close to theoretical value were synthesized by a SPS method. Machining characteristics such as machining time, surface quality are analyzed with measurement of voltage and current waveform according to machining condition of micro-electrical discharge machining with micro-channel shape.
Direct syntheses of bulk $Ti_3Al$ via electro-discharge-sintering (EDS) of a stoichiometric elemental powder mixture were investigated. A capacitor bank of $450{\mu}F$ was charged with three input energies, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kJ. The charged capacitor bank was then instantaneously discharged through 0.3 g of a Ti-25.0 at.%Al powder mixture for consolidation. Complete phase transformation occurred in less than $200{\mu}sec$ by the discharge and a bulk $Ti_3Al$ compact was obtained. Compared with consolidated samples fabricated by conventional methods such as high vacuum sintering and casting, the electro-discharge-sintered $Ti_3Al$ compact shows a very fine microstructure with a hardness value of 425 Hv. Electro-discharge-sintering under a $N_2$ atmosphere successfully modified the surface Ti oxide of the $Ti_3Al$ compact into Ti nitride, which concurred with the synthesis and consolidation of $Ti_3Al$. Complete conversion yielding a single phase $Ti_3Al$ is primarily dominated by the fast solid state diffusion reaction.

The paper presents the comparative results of TiAlN coatings deposited by DC and pulsed DC asymmetric bipolar magnetron sputtering systems. The results show that, with the decreasing duty cycle and increasing pulse frequency, the coating morphology changes from a columnar to a dense structure, with finer grains. Pulsed sputtered TiAlN coatings showed higher hardness, higher residual stress, and smaller grain sizes than dc prepared TiAlN coatings. Moreover residual stress of pulsed sputtered TiAlN coatings increased on increasing pulse frequency. Meanwhile, the surface roughness decreased continuously with increasing pulsed DC frequency up to 50 kHz.
Various heat-treatments were conducted to Ti-48.1at%Al and Ti-48.3at%Al-1.2at%Mn alloys casted by plasma arc melting system. Mechanical properties, microstructure and high temperature oxidizing behaviors of as-casted and heat-treatment alloys were investigated. Ti-48.1Al and Ti-48.3Al-1.2Mn alloys were decreased in strength according to increased of heattreatment temperature. Oxidizing weight gain of Ti-48.1Al alloy which conducted at $1273^{\circ}K$ was linearly increased. In case of adding Mn to alloy, there was no rapid increase of oxidizing weight gain during early time.

(Ti, Al)N films were deposited on 304 stainless steel by D.C. magnetron sputtering using Al target and Ti plate. The properties of (Ti, Al)N films such as composition, microhardness, grain size, crystal structure were investigated. The chemical composition of (Ti, Al)N films was similar to the sputter area ratio of titanium to aluminum target by means of EDS and AES survey. The higher bias voltage to substrate and the smaller input of N2 gas showedthe increased microhardness and the finer grain size of the films. The results obtained from this study show, it is belived, that the (Ti, Al)N film by D.C.magne-tron sputtering is promising in the wear resistance use.
For expanding the applications and workability of TiAl alloy, elongation is very important property. Fine microstructure is needed for elongation and physical properties of TiAl alloys. In this study, The effects of cyclic heat treatment process for fine microstructure of Ti-46Al-Nb-W-Cr-Si-C alloy, which was made by VAR (vacuum arc remelting) and VIM(vacuum induction melting) centrifugal casting process, was investigated. Cycle heat treatment process was very effective for recrystallization of this TiAl system, which has microstructure size of $50{\sim}100{\mu}m$ through pre-heat treatment, cyclic heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase region and solution heat treatment respectively. Refined grain size was finally confirmed by photos of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.
Nonohmic properties of ZnO ceramics with various small amounts of additives were studied in relation to experimental methods, additive contant and sintaring temperature. The kinds of additives used to following chemicals were basic additives ($0.5Bi_2O_3$, $0.3BaCO_3$, $0.5MnCO_3$, $0.5Cr_2O_3$, $0.1KNO_3$), $TiO_2$ and $Al(OH)_3$. Expecially, this study has focused on the effectsof $TiO_2$ and $Al(OH)_3$ in ZnO ceramics with the basic additives. SEM studies indicated that the addition of TiO2 promoted grain growth but retarded grain growth with the addition of $Al(OH)_3$. Also, in the case of calcination of ZnO with $TiO_2$ and ZnO with $Al(OH)_3$ previously, grain size of ZnO with $TiO_2$ was larger and that of ZnO with Al(OH)3 was smaller in comparison to the case with out calcination. From the viewpoint of nonohmic exponent and nonohimic resistance, electrical characteristics of ZnO, $TiO_2$ and the basic additives was more effective than that of ZnO, $Al(OH)_3$ and the basic additives. Nonohmic exponent and nonohmic resistance of ZnO, $TiO_2$ and the basic additives was 11-13 and 40-65 respectively.

Arc-melted alloys of TiAl-(o.25, 0.5, 1.0at%) Si were isothermally oxidized at 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air for 60hr. It was found that the oxidation resistance of the prepared TiAl-Si alloys was much better than that of pure TiAl, being progressively increasing with an increase in the Si content. This was attributed to the formation of $SiO_2$in addition to ($TiO_2$+$Al_2$$O_3$) oxides which formed in TiAl alloys with and without silicon additions. However, the silica formation within the oxide layer unfortunately accelerated the oxide scale spallations. During oxidation, all the elements in the base alloy diffused outward, whereas oxygen from the atmosphere diffused inward. The oxides were primarily composed of an outer thick $TiO_2$layer, an intermediate diffuse $Al_2$$O_3$layer and an inner $TiO_2$layer. A small amount of $SiO_2$was present all over the oxide scale and some voids were found around the intermediate layer.
Titanium-Boron-Aluminium master alloys are used extensively to grain-refine a wide range of aluminium alloys. This experiment was performed by various amounts of AlTi5B1 addition to the technical aluminium alloys, and also by changing cast temperature and hold time of the melts. The macrostructures were shown that with increasing the addition of AlTi5B1 to the melts, the grain became finer. In the case of cast temperature high enough over $900^{\circ}C$, the grain became coarser, but hold time change not affected on the grain refinement. Particles of $TiAl_3$, and $TiB_2$ were found in the grains and grainboundaries. The important role of grain refinement in this experiment were mainly $TiAl_3$, and also $TiB_2$ those have been confirmed in TEM, SEM, EDS, WDX and X-ray diffraction.

[ $Sr_xCa_{(1-x)}TiO_3$ ] red phosphors doped with Pr(0.13 mol%) and Al(0.23 mol%) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. Change of crystal structure occurred in $Sr_xCa_{(1-x)}TiO_3:Pr,Al$ phosphors with increasing value of x. Green and red luminescence were observed from $SrTiO_3:Pr,Al$ phosphors at low temperature. However, only red luminescence in the case of $CaTiO_3:Pr,Al$ phosphors was measured at low temperature. The main cause of green luminescence was explained by the bandgap reduction.
