  • Cochinchina momordica seeds (CMS) have been widely used due to antitumor activity by Mongolian tribes of China. However, the details of the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, we found that an EtOAc (ethyl ester) extract of CMS (CMSEE) induced differentiation and caused growth inhibition of melanoma B16 F1 cells. CMSEE at the concentration of $5-200{\mu}g/ml$ exhibited strongest anti-proliferative effects on B16 F1 cells among other CMS fractions (water or petroleum ether). Moreover, CMSEE induced melanoma B16 F1 cell differentiation, characterized by dendrite-like outgrowth, increasing melanogenesis production, as well as enhancing tyrosinase activity. Western blot analysis showed that sustained phosphorylation of p38 MAP accompanied by decrease in ERK1/2 and JNK dephosphorylation were involved in CMSEE-induced B16 F1 cell differentiation. Notably, 6 compounds that were isolated and identified may be responsible for inducing differentiation of CMSEE. These results indicated that CMSEE contributes to the differentiation of B16 F1 cells through modulating MAPKs activity, which may throw some light on the development of potentially therapeutic strategies for melanoma treatment.

  • We analyzed Korean professional basketball and baseball players salary under the assumption that it depends on the personal records and contribution to the team in the previous year. We extensively used data visualization tools to check the relationship among the variables, to find outliers and to do model diagnostics. We used multiple linear regression and regression tree to fit the model and used cross-validation to find an optimal model. We check the relationship between variables carefully and chose a set of variables for the stepwise regression instead of using all variables. We found that points per game, number of assists, number of free throw successes, career are important variables for the basketball players. For the baseball pitchers, career, number of strike-outs per 9 innings, ERA, number of homeruns are important variables. For the baseball hitters, career, number of hits, FA are important variables.

  • The purpose of the study was to compare selected kinematic variables between the female medalists and a Korean female javelin thrower at the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011. Three medalists and one Korean javelin thrower that participated in the Championships were videotaped using three high-speed cameras (300 frames/s, EX-F1 Exilim, Casio, Japan). This study identified the performance differences between the two groups. The results showed that the Korean female javelin thrower (KFJT) clearly had a greater delivery phase time than the female medalists. In order to throw farther, a thrower must exert a greater force to accelerate their body in a short time. This study also found that the release velocity of the KFJT was lower than that of the female medalists. The KFJT showed evidence of using her extremities differently to achieve the maximum release velocity. When comparing the inclination angle of the trunk across javelin throwers, the lowest value was recorded in the KFJT. Because the trunk position at release plays a significant role in determining the release height and release velocity, the KFJT should not rely on her upper extremities to achieve as high a release velocity as possible.

  • In this paper, we proposed a paper-based pattern-switchable antenna using inkjet-printing technology. The proposed antenna is composed of two bow-tie antennas and a switching network. The bow-tie antennas are inkjet-printed on paper using a low cost home printer. The switching network is built on a printed-circuit-board(PCB) and consists of a single-pole-double-throw(SPDT) switch and balun element. A double-sided parallel-strip line(DSPSL) can convert the unbalanced microstrip mode to the balanced strip mode. Two bow-tie antennas have different radiation patterns because of the different orientation of the reflectors. It is demonstrated from EM simulation and measurement that the radiation patterns of the proposed antenna are successfully switched by the SPDT.

  • Even though the interior of urban transit vehicle has been changed as a preventing measure against fire to make it inflammable, there remains a possibility of fire breaking out in case of gasoline etc being brought in the subway. However, there is also the possibility that in case if fire toxic gas is generated and hot air spreads in carriage it will prove very dangerous for people sitting inside. This is a comparative study where we compare simulation results with model examining the time and direction the fire spreads when it breaks out. Also there is vertical distribution of temperature in carriage where the fire spreads out. This study is about demonstrating how to establish smokeless system in urban vehicle, about its necessity, and about vehicle system restructuring. This study also makes an effort to find more advanced method for efficient fire safety in trains. In existing vehicles, in case of fire, the smoke can't go out when doors are closed and hence it spreads in whole train. Even though the method of using ventilation or exhaust established inside the carriage to throw smoke out is much better than the way of opening end doors in each carriage, this study is trying to do research on second way. Through simulation we see that in second case, even though not as good as the first one, smoke can exit through gates. Even though the first method is better, the second can also be uses to let fire out. We can know that in the first case as the smoke can exit out faster, it provides more safety for people. So this system provides better fire safety condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop three Judo-doll systems for enhancement of Judo's performance. Traditional Judo training requires a human training partner. Unfortunately it is not always easy to find one. Multifunctional Judo-doll training system has therefore been developed, and is described here. The system consists of a dummy, a power generating mechanism, and kinematic links. The power-generating mechanism generates forces similar to those of a human, by adjusting deadweights and controlling powderbrake's forces. The powderbrake force is controlled by the microprocessor according to the exercise scenario. The kinetic links, which mimic a human training partner's motions, has been developed based on a $Vicon^{TM}$ system's analysis of the movement of human training partners. This mechanism whose name is "L link-wire" consists of L type links, wire, roller, and dead weight. This mechanism generates the force that leads the link to the neutral position regardless the link is pushed or pulled. The lifting mechanism that lifts the doll when the one-armed shoulder throw skill is applied is also developed. A 32-bit microprocessor controls the whole system; it reads the loadcell data, controls the electromagnetic force, and communicates with a PC via Bluetooth. The training history, including loadcell data, date, and training time, is stored in the PC for analysis. This training system can be used to enhance the Judo performance of any self training player.

  • The motions used in throwing place tremendous stresses on the soft tissues about the player's shoulder. In order to throw successfully, the shoulder complex must be capable of excessive motion, while maintaining stability of the glenohumeral joint. Injuries to the throwing player can result from acute trauma, but more commonly can be a result of overuse injuries from the repetitive throwing activity. Inbalance in the muscles and soft tissue about the shoulder can result in an injury secondary to abnormal biomechanics of the glenohumeral complex. The preventive measure a throwing player can take in order to maintain a healthy throwing shoulder is to participate in a regular shoulder strengthening program. It is when the muscles about the shoulder become imbalanced, secondary to either injury or relative weakness, that instability and injury can occur. By understanding the pitching motion and the relative contribution of the muscles, the treating physician has a framework on which to build knowledge regarding physical findings and diagnosis of shoulder injuries in throwing players. Once a diagnosis is made. a successful treatment plan may be developed for the player, including both conservative and , at time surgical means.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate variability of kinematic factors affecting the record in women's javelin throwing. For this study, 8 female-javelin thrower participated in this experiment. The three digital video cameras (Sony, 120x) were used to record motions. Kwon3D 2.1 was used to process data and they were analyzed with Excell for factors. The sampling rate of a camera was 60Hz and shutter speed of a camera was 1/1000sec. The coordinate data were filtered using a fourth-order Butterworth low pass filtering with an estimated optimum cut-off frequency of 6Hz. The results were as follows: 1. From cross step to landing of delivery, the average velocities of CoM of non-dominant athletes were greater than dominant athletes and those of CoM of non-dominant athletes less than dominant athletes, but at release dominant athletes had a lower average velocity and a variability than non-dominant athletes. 2. From cross step to landing of delivery, the average throwing velocities and variabilities of a javelin of dominant athletes were greater than dominant athletes, but at release, dominant athletes had a higher velocity than dominant athletes and had a equal variability. 3. At every events, a forward or backward angles and variabilities of non-dominant athletes were greater than dominant athletes. 4. From cross step to landing of delivery, dominant athletes' elbow average angles were greater than non-dominant athletes and the variabilities of latter less than non-dominant athletes, but at release dominant athletes' variabilities were smaller than non-dominant athletes. 5. At landing of delivery, dominant athletes' knee average angles and variabilities of a supporting foot were a greater than non-dominant athletes, and at release, dominant athletes' knee average angles was a greater but variabilities less than non-dominant athletes. In conclusion, the dominant threw javelins fast while having stable postures and the range of elbow's angle large.

  • Stray cats are a common feature roaming the streets and alleys of Kuwait; they could be a source of parasites, including trematodes, that affect humans. A survey was conducted to identify feline trematodes and throw the light on their public health significance in Kuwait. Out of 240 stray cats trapped from different localities of Kuwait from June 2011 to May 2012, 59 (24.6%) were found to be infected with 14 species of trematodes. The most common were trematodes of the genus Heterophyes, particularly H. heterophyes and H. dispar that were found in respectively 15.8% and 10.8% of the cats examined. Other trematodes recorded, with lower prevalences, were Heterophyes nocens (2.9%), Haplorchis taichui (3.8%), Stictodora sawakinensis (2.1%), Stellantchasmus falcatus (1.6%), Echinochasmus japonicus (1.6%), and Mesostephanus dottrensi (1.3%). Centrocestus cuspidatus, Galactosomum fregatae, Ascocotyle sp., Mesostephanus appendiculatus, Haplorchis yokogawai, and Pygidiopsis genata showed the lowest prevalence (0.4%) and intensity. The majority of the trematodes are recorded for the first time in Kuwait and even in the Gulf region. The study reveals that stray cats are good indicators of fish-borne trematodes in the environment. As all trematodes recovered are zoonotic, their significance to public health should be considred.
