  • Snowdrifts around buildings can cause serious problems when formed on undesirable places. The formation of snowdrifts is highly connected to the wind pattern around the building, and the wind pattern is again dependent on the building design. The shear stress on the surface and snowdrifting around different buildings are investigated through CFD analysis and compared to measurements. The computations of shear stress shows local minima in the same areas as snowdrifts are formed. The snowdrifting computations utilises a drift-flux model where a fluid with snow properties is allowed to drift through a fluid with air properties. An apparent dynamic viscosity of the snow/air mixture is defined and used as a threshold criterion for snowdrifting. The results from the snowdrifting computations show increased snow density where snowdrifts are expected, and are in agreement with previous large-scale snowdrift measurements. The results show that computational fluid dynamics can be a tool for planning building design in snowdrifting areas.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of estimation of average radar cross section (RCS) for Swerling 1 fluctuation model, based on the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation method. In a mathematical development we take into account the event that target strength is lower than detection threshold, or the target is not detected. Our ML estimation for the SWR uses the score function that is the joint probability-pdf of the events and random variables. The solution to the ML estimation reduces to an expression in the from of a contraction mapping. The computational efficiency of the contraction mapping theorem is significant in computing the ML estimation as compared with other root-finding algorithms fur most radar tracking conditions.

  • Recently much research efforts have focused on how to manage carbon emissions in logistics operations. This paper formulates a model to determine an optimal shipment size with aims to minimize the total cost consisting not only of inventory and transportation costs but also cost for carbon emissions. Unlike the literature assuming carbon emission factors as a given condition, we consider the emission factors as decision variables. It is allowed to make an investment in improving carbon emission factors. The optimal investment decision is shown to be of a threshold type with respect to unit investment costs. Moreover, the findings in this work provide insights on the various elements of the investment decision and their impacts.

  • To investigate physical properties of Solar pores, we use SDO/HMI data from 2010 to 2013. For this, we select single and isolated pores from the active region (Axx, Bxo, Bxi and Bxc-type) listed in Solar Region Summary. Pore is defined by connected pixels satisfying the intensity threshold from pixel of minimum intensity. We try to obtain area, intensity, magnetic field, and Doppler velocity of pores from HMI data. After removing the effects of orbital motion of the SDO satellite and differential rotation of the Sun, we identify that significant daily variations of Doppler velocity with non-zero ordinates still remain in the umbral region, and the artifact is quite dependent on the strength of magnetic field and radial component of velocity of SDO satellite. In this study we develope empirical model to remove the artifact. A preliminary result on the elimination of the artifact will be presented.

  • We have analyzed channel doping and dimensions(channel length, width and thickness) for the optimum subthreshold characteristics of DG(Double Gate) MOSFET based on the model of MicroTec 4.0. Since the DGMOSFET is the candidate device to shrink short channel effects, the determination of design rule for DGMOSFET is very important to develop sub-100nm devices for high speed and low power consumption. As device size scaled down, the controllability of dimensions and oxide thickness is very low. We have analyzed the short channel effects for the variation of channel dimensions, and found the design conditions of DGMOSFET having the optimum subthreshold characteristics for digital applications.

  • This paper describes the fault detection and failsafe logic to be used in an Electronic Stability Program(ESP). The aim of this paper is to prevent of erroneous controls in the ESP. Developed this paper introduces the fault detection logic and evaluation of residual signals. The failsafe logic consists of four redundant sub-models, which can be used for detecting the faults in various sensors (yaw rate, lateral acceleration, steering wheel angle). We present two mathematical residual generation methods : one is a method using the average value and the other is a method using the minimum value of the each residual. We verified a failsafe logic developed using vehicle test results also we compare vehicle model based simulation results with test vehicle results.

  • This paper proposes a new method of traffic signal detection and recognition in an RGB color model. The proposed method firstly processes RGB-filtering in order to detect traffic signal candidates. Secondly, it performs adaptive threshold processing and then analyzes connected components of the binary image. The connected component of a traffic signal has to be satisfied with both a bounding box rate and an area rate that are defined in this paper. The traffic signal recognition system is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithms are quite successful.

  • The potential energy surface (PES) for the loss of HCN from the pyrimidine molecular ion has been explored using quantum chemical calculations. Possible reaction pathways to form five $C_3H_3N^{+{\bullet}}$ isomers have been obtained with Gaussian 4 model calculations. The rate constant for the HCN loss and the product branching ratio have been calculated using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory on the basis of the obtained PES. The resultant rate constant agrees with the previous experimental result. By a kinetic analysis, it is proposed that the formation of $CH=CHC{\equiv}NH^{+{\bullet}}$ is favored near the dissociation threshold, while the formation of $CH=CHN{\equiv}CH^{+{\bullet}}$ is favored at high energies.

  • Results from multiple high profile experiments on the parameters influencing the impacts that cause skull fractures to the frontal, temporal, and parietal bones were gathered and analyzed. The location of the impact as a binary function of frontal or lateral strike, the velocity, the striking area of the impactor, and the force needed to cause skull fracture in each experiment were subjected to statistical analysis using the JMP statistical software pack. A novel neural network model predicting skull fracture threshold was developed with a high statistical correlation ($R^2=0.978$) and presented in this text. Despite variation within individual studies, the equation herein proposes a 3 kN greater resistance to fracture for the frontal bone when compared to the temporoparietal bones. Additionally, impacts with low velocities (<4.1 m/s) were more prone to cause fracture in the lateral regions of the skull when compared to similar velocity frontal impacts. Conversely, higher velocity impacts (>4.1 m/s) showed a greater frontal sensitivity.

  • We consider a preventive replacement policy for a cold-standby system with N components, in which only one component is in operation at a time. If the component in operation fails, a standby component is immediately switched into operation. If all components fail, the system fails. The system is inspected at random poins in time to determine whether it is to be replaced or not. If the number of failed components at the time of inspection exceeds a threshold value r, the system is replaced. Otherwise the decision is put off until the next inspection point arrives. Under the cost structure which includes a replacement cost, a system down-time cost and a holding cost of the components, we develop an efficient procedure to find the optimal control values N and r, which minimize the expected cost per unit time.
