  • In this study, a new type of energy absorbers with a functionally graded thickness is investigated, these type of absorbers absorb energy through expanding-folding processes. The expanding-folding absorbers are composed of two sections: a thin-walled aluminum matrix and a thin-walled steel mandrel. Previous studies have shown higher efficiency of the mentioned absorbers compared to the conventional ones. In this study, the effect of thickness which has been functionally-graded on the aluminum matrix (in which expansion occurs) was investigated. To this end, initial functions were considered for the matrix thickness, which was ascending/descending along the axis. The study was done experimentally and numerically. Comparing the experimental data with the numerical results showed high consistency between the numerical and experimental results. In the final section of this study, the best energy absorber functionally graded thickness was introduced by optimization using a third-order genetic algorithm. The optimization results showed that by choosing a minimum thickness of 1.6 mm and the exponential coefficient of 3.25, the most optimal condition can be obtained for descending thickness absorbers.

  • In the construction industry, thin-walled frame elements with very slender open cross-sections and low torsional stiffness are often subjected to a complex loading condition where axial, bending, shear and torsional stresses are present simultaneously. Hence, these often fail in instability even before the yield capacity is reached. One of the most common instability conditions associated with thin-walled structures is Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB). In this study, a first order Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) formulation and numerical analysis of cold-formed steel lipped channel beams (C80×40×10×1, C90×40×10×1, C100×40×10×1, C80×40×10×1.6, C90×40×10×1.6 and C100×40×10×1.6) subjected to uniform moment is carried out to predict pure Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB). These results are compared with the Finite Element Analysis of the beams modelled with shell elements using ABAQUS and analytical results based on Euler's buckling formula. The mode wise deformed shape and modal participation factors are obtained for comparison of the responses along with the effect of varying the length of the beam from 2.5 m to 10 m. The deformed shapes of the beam for different modes and GBTUL plots are analyzed for comparative conclusions.

  • The failure of a thin-walled tube was studied in this paper based on three failure models. Both proportional and non-proportional loading paths were applied. Proportional loading consisted of combined tension-torsion. Cyclic non-proportional loading was also applied. It was a circular out-of-phase axial-shear stress loading path. The third loading path was a combination of a constant internal pressure and a bending moment. The failure models under study were equivalent plastic strain, modified Mohr-Coulomb (Bai-Wierzbicki) and Tearing parameter models. The elasto-plastic analysis was conducted using J2 criterion and nonlinear kinematic hardening. The return mapping algorithm was employed to numerically solve the plastic flow relations. The effects of the hydrostatic stress on the plastic flow and the stress triaxiality parameter on the failure were discussed. Each failure model under study was utilized to predict failure. The failure loads obtained from each model were compared with each other. The equivalent plastic strain model was independent from the stress triaxiality parameter, and it predicted the highest failure load in the bending problem. The modified Mohr-Coulomb failure model predicted the lowest failure load for the range of the stress triaxiality parameter and Lode's angle.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the mechanical behaviors of the cold-formed thin-walled steel and reinforced concrete sandwich composite slab (CTS&RC-SCS) under vertical loads and to develop the calculation methods of its flexural bearing capacity and section stiffness. Two CTS&RC-SCS specimens were designed and manufactured to carry out the static loading test, and meanwhile, the numerical simulation analyses based on finite element method were implemented. The comparison between experimental results and numerical analysis results shows that the CTS&RC-SCS has good flexural capacity and ductility, and the accuracy and rationality of the numerical simulation analysis are verified. Further, the variable parameter analysis results indicate that neither increasing the concrete strength grade nor increasing the thickness of C-sections can significantly improve the flexural capacity of CTS&RC-SCS. With the increase of the ratio of longitudinal bars and the thickness of the composite slab, the flexural capacity of CTS&RC-SCS will be significantly increased. On the basis of experimental research and numerical analysis above, the calculation formula of the flexural capacity of CTS&RC-SCS was deduced according to the plastic section design theory, and section stiffness calculation formula was proposed according to the theory of transformed section. In terms of the ultimate flexural capacity and mid-span deflection, the calculated values based on the formulas and the experimental values are in good agreement.

  • In this paper, a theory for the static analysis of large plastic deformations of 3-dimensional frames, aiming at application to the collapse analysis of ship structures, is presented. In the frame analysis formulation, effects of shear deformations are included. A plastic hinge is inserted into the field of a beam end, and post. failure deformation of the plastic hinge is characterized by finite rotations and extensions. In order to model deep web frames of ship's structures into a framed structures, collapse of thin-walled plate girders is investigated. The proposed analysis method is applied to several ship structural models in the references.

  • Buckling and post-buckling of cold-formed steel members are rather difficult to predict due to material and geometrical non-linearity. However, numerical techniques have reached a level of maturity such that many are now successfully undertaking ultimate strength analysis of cold-formed steel members. In numerical non-linear analysis, both geometrical and material imperfections, have to be estimated and properly used. They must be codified in terms of shape and magnitude. The presented paper represents a state-of-art report, including relevant results obtained by the authors and collected from literature, on that problem.

  • Generally, the buckling of thin-walled structures has studied for rectangular sections or circular sections. Rectangular sections have small stiffness and circular sections have large stiffness when they are compared with rectangular sections for local buckling. But both of them have similar stiffness to column buckling. Therefore in this paper, we are going to analyze the local buckling for the box section with rounded comer and compare with rectangular section. Also we confirm that the rounded comer section has larger local buckling strength than rectangular section.

  • In this research, design Sensitivity Analysis is presented for commercial vehicle such as large scale structural system. The proposed method is based on vibration analysis of the total structure and design sensitivity to identify the contribution factor of the component structure to the total system structure. In addition, approximated equations derived from response surface method are used for representative section properties of the thin walled beams.
