  • Thermal-fluid analysis was performed to understand the thermal behavior in the horizontal CVD reactor thereby to design a susceptor which has a uniform deposition rate during silicon EPI growing. Four different types of susceptor designs, standard (no hole susceptor), hole $\sharp$1 (240 mm), hole $\sharp$2 (150 mm) and hole $\sharp$3 (60 mm), were simulated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tool. Temperature, gas flow, deposition rate and growth rate were calculated and analyzed. The degree of flatness of EPI wafer loaded on the susceptor was computed in terms of silicon growth rate. The simulation results show that the temperature and thermal distribution in the wafer are greatly dependent on inner diameter of hole susceptor and demonstrate that the introduction of hole in the susceptor can degrade wafer flatness. Maximum temperature difference appeared around holes. As the diameter of the hole decreases, flatness of the wafer becomes poor. Among the threes types of susceptors with the hole, optimal design which resulted a good uniform flatness ($5\%$) was obtained when using hole $\sharp$1.

  • Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been used to generate electrical or mechanical power from low-grade thermal energy. Usually, this thermal energy is not supplied continuously at the constant thermal energy level. In order to optimally utilize fluctuating thermal energy, an axial-type turbine was applied to the expander of ORC and two supersonic nozzle were used to control the mass flow rate. Experiment was conducted with various turbine inlet temperatures (TIT) with the partial admission rate of 16.7 %. The tip diameter of rotor was to be 80 mm. In the cycle analysis, the output power of ORC was predicted with considering the load dissipating the output power produced from the ORC as well as the turbine efficiency. The predicted results showed the same trend as the experimental results, and the experimental results showed that the system efficiency of 2 % was obtained at the TIT of $100^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes thermal flow characteristics in various pipelines: straight pipeline and curved pipeline. In the permafrost area, pipelines are exposed to an extremely low temperature ($-40^{\circ}C$). In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid. In this paper, multi-phase and multi-species analysis was introduced to analyze the flow characteristics of permafrost pipelines on the vertical support members above ground.

  • This study focus on verification of the thermal efficiency of volumetric receiver with 5k Wth Dish-type solar thermal system. Spiral flow path shaped on receiver and working fluid(steam) flow along with this flow path. Porous material for radiation-thermal conversion used in former researches are substituted with the stainless steel wall installed along the spiral flow path. Numerical analysis for the flow path and temperature distributions are carried out. Numerical results are compared with experimental data. Using the numerical model, the heat transfer characteristics of spiral type receiver for dish-type solar thermal systems are known and the thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

  • The dynamic characteristics of the annular pressure seal employed in pump have been theoretically deduced with consideration of the effects of elastic deformation due to the thermal stress. The thermal deformation is developed for the two-dimensional steady thermal stress distribution in a infinite circular cylinder subject to heating of the seal and shaft surface into the surrounding fluid. To demonstrate this analysis, the effects of thermal stress on rotordynamic coefficients and logarithmic decrement for annular plain seals was shown.

  • Before the launch, launch vehicle is set up a few days ago at launch pad to check process and to supply fuels, etc. During the prelaunch process, the payload is exposed to the thermal environments. The purpose of a prelaunch thermal analysis is to predict maximum/minimum liftoff temperature of payload fairing and to evaluate air conditioning performance. The prelaunch thermal analysis of Delta II PLF is performed using Sinda/fluint, general thermal/fluid analyzer. The results are analyzed and compared with Delta II report.

  • In this study, two computational methodologies were compared to consider an effective conjugate heat transfer analysis technique for the cooled vane with thermal barrier coating. The first one is the physical modeling method of the TBC layer on the vane surface, which means solid volume of the TBC on the vane surface. The second one is the numerical modeling method of the TBC layer by putting the heat resistance interface condition on the surface between the fluid and solid domains, which means no physical layer on the vane surface. For those two methodologies, conjugate heat transfer analyses were conducted for the cooled vane with TBC layer having various thickness from 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm. Static pressure distributions for two cases show quite similar patterns in the overall region while the physical modeling shows quite a little difference around the throat area. Thermal analyses indicated that the metal temperature distributions are quite similar for both methods. The results show that the numerical modeling method can reduce the computational resources significantly and is quite suitable method to evaluate the overall performance of TBC even though it does not reflect the exact geometry and flow field characteristics on the vane surface.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency design technique for developing the serialized models of a single-channel pump based on the diameter, flow rate and head as the main performance parameters. The variation in pump performance by changing of the single-channel pump geometry was predicted based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerical analysis was conducted by solving three-dimensional steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The tendencies of the hydraulic performance depending on the pump geometry scale were analyzed with the fixed rotational speed. These performances were expressed and evaluated as the functionalization for designing the serialized models of a single-channel pump in this work.

  • In Korea while the dam or reservoir is an important water resource, the value of this water resource is deteriorating by thermal-induced stratification. To ameliorate the water quality of reservoir by breaking stratification the use of air diffuser system is now widespread in Korea. According to the previous research, dynamics of bubble plume and destratification efficiency depended upon two dimensionless groupings; Mh and Pn suggested by Asaeda et al (1993). However, these two variables only include Q, N, H, g, u. and installed Boryeong reservior in appropriate width of water aeration, air dose and number of installations after calculating by applying these figures. This paper is performed to find out effect analysis about water aeration improvement to break thermal stratification.

  • Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is an effective method of power generation, which has a small impact on the environment and can be utilized semi-permanently. This paper describes a dynamic model for a pilot OTEC plant built by the Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University, Japan. This plant is based on Uehara cycle, in which binary mixtures of ammonia and water is used as the working fluid. Some simulation results attained by this model and the analysis of the results are presented. The developed computer simulation can be used to actual practice effectively, such as stable control in a steady operation, optimal determination of the plant specifications for a higher thermal efficiency and evaluation of the economic prospects and off-line training for the operators of OTEC plant.
