The residual stresses on the surfaces of low carbon 12Cr steels used as a nuclear steam turbine blade material have been studied by controlling the flame hardening surface treatments. The temperature cycles on the surfaces of 12Cr steel were controlled precisely as a function of both the surface temperature and cooling rate. The final residual stress state generated by flame hardening was dominated by two opposite competitive contributions; one is tensile stress due to phase transformation and the other is compressive stress due to thermal contraction on cooling. The optimum processing temperatures required for the desirable residual stress and hardness were in the range of $850^{\circ}C$ to $960^{\circ}C$ on the basis of the specification of GE power engineering. It was also observed that the high residual tensile stress generated by flame hardening induced the cracks on the surfaces, especially across the prior austenite grain boundaries, and the material failure virtually, which might limit practical use of the surface engineered parts by flame hardening.
The winding problems of traction motor are the major determinant of motor's life. The root cause of winding failure is gradual deterioration of the insulation due to thermal, electrical, mechanical and environmental stresses. The aging of the insulation reduces the electrical and mechanical strength of the insulation. At same point, a voltage surge or mechanical shock from a traction motor start will fracture or break down the insulation. To achieve the expected life usually requires extensive laboratory evaluation of the insulation systems and the use of accelerated aging tests. There are several nondestructive test available for checking, the condition of motor insulation, the probable extent of aging, and the rate of which aging is taking place. So the insulation characteristics of stator coil were each analyzed by measurement of dielectric loss(tan$\sigma$), capacitance and partial discharge. The method of diagnosis is able to analyze the insulation condition and evaluate the life of the traction motor.
In domestic construction industry progress, construction and quality control of large structures are considered to be important as the superstructure and mass scale of structures. In the case of mass concrete, high hydration heat caused by cement hydration generates temperature stress by generating internal temperature difference with the concrete surface. These temperature stresses cause cracks to penetrate the concrete structure. A method of lowering the heat generation by incorporating Urea in order to reduce the concrete temperature crack has been proposed. In this study, the heat function coefficient for the FEM temperature crack analysis of the mass concrete containing the element was derived and the adiabatic temperature rise test was carried out according to the incorporation of the element. As a result of this experiment, the maximum temperature of 41 ± 1℃ was obtained irrespective of the amount of urea, and the maximum temperature decreased by 16.9℃ in concrete containing 40kg/㎥ of urea.

Because of the various excellent characteristics of cast basalt materials. such as, anti-corrosion, anti-wearing, good hardness. high chemical stability, of which steel may not possess, the steel-basalt composite pipes are used in severe environments for compensating the defects of steel. However. without sufficient mechanical investigation prior to application. the basalt liners in steel-basalt composite pipes may be cracked and broken or the basalt liners are omitted from steel pipes in applications. In these cases, the merits of basalt materials may disappear and the basalt liners may not play their good roles as expected. Therefore, it is required that mechanical behavior of steel-basalt composite pipes and surrounding environments be fully examined before installation. The limit of bending moment with which steel-basalt composite pipe may safely endure is calculated and the limit curvature of the composite pipe in the safe range is presented in this paper. The temperature distributions and the thermal stresses are also computed and the limit difference of temperatures between inner and outer side of composite pipe is given together.
Most accidents of medium-voltage cables installed in nuclear power plants result from the initial defect of internal insulators or the initial failure due to poor construction. However, as the service years of plants increase, the possibility of cable accidents is also rapidly increases. This is primarily caused by electric, mechanical, thermal, and radiation stresses. Recently, much attention is paid to the study of cable diagnoses. To date, partial discharge and Tan${\delta}$ measurements are known as reliable methods to diagnose the aging of medium-voltage cables. High frequency partial discharge measurement techniques have been widely used to diagnose cables in transmission and distribution systems. However, the on-line high frequency partial discharge technique has not been used in the nuclear power plants because of the plant shutdown risk, degraded measurement sensitivity, and application problems. In this paper, the partial discharge measurement with a portable device was tried to evaluate the integrity of the 4.16kV and 13.8kV cable lines. The test results show that the high detection sensitivity can be achieved by the high frequency partial discharge technique. The present technique is highly attractive to diagnose medium voltage cables in nuclear power plants.

This paper presents a new single phase front-end ac-dc bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier topology. The proposed converter achieves a high efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltages, a high power factor, low line current harmonics and both step up and step down voltage conversions. This topology is based on a non-inverting buck-boost (Zeta) converter. In this approach, the input diode bridge is removed and a maximum of one diode conducts in a complete switching period. This reduces the conduction losses and the thermal stresses on the switches when compare to existing PFC topologies. Inherent power factor correction is achieved by operating the converter in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) which leads to a simplified control circuit. The characteristics of the proposed design, principles of operation, steady state operation analysis, and control structure are described in this paper. An experimental prototype has been built to demonstrate the feasibility of the new converter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the improved power quality at the AC mains and the lower conduction losses of the converter.
For mechanical and electrical stability and environment protection, Cu and stainless steel stabilizer is laminated to Ag layer to produce a composite neutral-axis(N-A) architecture in which the YBCO layer is centered between the oxide buffered metallic substrate and stabilizer strip lamination. this architecture allows the wire to meet operational requirements including stresses at cryogenic temperature, winding tensions, mechanical bending requirements thermal and electrical stability under fault conditions. we have experimentally studied mechanical properties of laminated stainless steel stabilizer on YBCO coated conductors. we have laminated YBCO coated conductors by continuous dipping soldering process. we have investigated lamination interface between solder and stabilizer, YBCO coated conductor. we evaluated bonding properties tensile / shear bonding strength, peeling strength laminated YBCO coated conductors.
In this paper, the residual stresses for the wide-band laser heat treatment using a polygon mirror have been analyzed. The results of FE analysis are compared with the experimental results. ANSYS Version 5.3, a commercial FE-code, is used for the FE stress analysis. The structural analysis was performed on after thermal analysis. The residual stress distribution across the hardened area was measured by the X-ray diffraction technique. The laser hardening conditions, 2kW laser power and 2mm/s travel speed, were used for the experiment and the FE analysis. Analysis results, which is maximum tensile residual stress is about 143MPa and maximum compressive residual stress is about -380MPa. Under same parameters with the analysis, experimental results indicate that MTRS is about 152MPa and MCRS is about -312MPa. The experimental results is about 6% higher than the FE analysis. As a result, residual stress data from the experiment close well with that of the FE analysis.
Ultrafine-grained or nanostructured alloys usually lack the strain hardening capability needed to sustain uniform tensile deformation under high stresses. To circumvent this problem, we fabricated the Cu-based composite reinforced with the 3-dimensionally interconnected $Cu_5Zr$ phase using the combined technique of rapid quenching and subsequent hot-rolling. The alloy exhibited a tensile ductility of ~2.5% together with a strength of 1.57 GPa, which exceeds the values of most commercially available Cu-Be alloys. In this study, we elucidated the structural origin of the high strength and tensile ductility of the developed alloy by examining the thermal stability of the $Cu_5Zr$ reinforcing phase and the energy (work) absorption capability of the Cu matrix.

The present paper addresses a refined plate theoryin order to describe the response of anti-symmetric cross-ply laminated plates subjected to a uniformlydistributed nonlinear thermo-mechanical loading. In the present theory, the undetermined integral terms are used and the variables number is reduced to four instead of five or more in other higher-order theories. The boundary conditions on the top and the bottom surfaces of the plate are satisfied; hence the use of the transverse shear correction factors isavoided. The principle of virtual work is used to obtain governing equations and boundary conditions. Navier solution for simply supported plates is used to derive analytical solutions. For the validation of the present theory, numerical results for displacements and stressesare compared with those of classical, first-order, higher-order and trigonometricshear theories reported in the literature.
