This paper addresses technical problems of thermal contact conductance or resistance which inevitably occurs in most cryogenic engineering systems. The main focus of this paper is to examine what kind of physical factors primarily influences the thermal contact resistance and to suggest how it can be minimized. It is a good practical rule that the contact surface must have sub-micron roughness level with no oxide layer and be thinly covered by indium, gold, or Apiezon-N grease for securing sufficient direct contact area. The higher contact pressure, the lower the thermal contact resistance. The general description of this technique has been widely perceived and reasonable engineering results have been achieved in most applications. However, the detailed view of employing these techniques and their relative efficacies to reduce thermal contact resistances need to be thoroughly reviewed. We should consider specific thermal contact conditions, examine the engineering requirements, and execute each method with precautions to fulfil their maximum potentials.
This study was aimed at development of fabrication process of functionally graded materials(FGM), consisting of metal and ceramic by thermal spraying method. NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM were made by using plasma spraying onto the SS400 carbon steel substrate. And mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength of the coating layer were investigated. Adhesive strength was evaluated by acoustic emission method. It was resulted that NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM made by thermal spraying method showed excellent thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength compared to the other lamellar structures of sprayed coatings and that AE is useful tool to evaluate the defect of thermal sprayed coating layer.
Several technologies are employed to protect substrates from corrosion and erosion damage. In particular, arc thermal spray coating technology is widely used as anti-corrosive technology for steel and concrete structures and is applied to offshore plants and petrochemical and drilling facilities. In this investigation, solid particle impingement erosion experiments were performed on an arc thermal spraying-coated specimen using 85% Al-14% Zn-1% Zr wire rod in KR-RA steel. This study investigated the effect of fluorosilicone sealing on the erosion resistance characteristics of the thermal spray coating layer. The erosion rates of the thermal spray-coated and sealed specimens were 4.1×10-4 and 8.5×10-4, respectively. At the beginning of the experiment, the fluorosilicone sealant was almost destroyed by the impact of the solid particles. The destruction time for the coating layer was 10 minutes for the thermal spray-coated specimen and 13 minutes for the sealed specimens, indicating that the sealed specimens had better erosion resistance characteristics to solid particle impingement.
The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of heat transfer in Heat Pipe which used the composition wick of screened groove - metallic mesh by ADI method and experimental results. As the results, the more than number of metallic mesh screen layers in a heat pipe increased, the fewer the effect of heat recovery decreased. In case of 1 - layer metallic mesh screen wick, the response of the effect in heat recovery was more rapidly showed than in case of other layers and in spite of high load, the evaporation section of Heat pipe with 1 - layer metallic mesh screen wick showed the stable response and did not show excessive super heat. There was a interrelation between thermal resistance and the variable layers, between thermal resistance and the variable gaps of metallic meshes, the heat transfer characteristics of Heat pipe were depended on the thermal resistance of composition wick.
Uniformity of the wafer temperature is one of the important factors in etching process. Plasma, chucking force, backside helium pressure and the surface temperature of ESC(electrostatic chuck) affect the wafer temperature. ESC consists of several layers of structure. Each layer has own thermal resistance and the Si-adhesive layer has highest thermal resistance among them. In this work, the temperature distribution of ESC was analyzed by 3-D FEM with various defects and the thickness deviation of the Si-adhesive layer. The result with Si-adhesive layer with the low center thickness deviation shows modified temperature distribution of ESC surface.
In order to prevent the thermal and enviromenatal degradation of contact materials a nickel layer was plated as an undercoat of gold plating on the surface phosphorous bronze. The thickness of nikel and gold coating and chemical resistance of the coatings were measured at various conditions. Variation of morphology and chemical composition was studied by SEM, EDS and ESCA, respectively. Nickel layer was found to act as a thermal diffusion barrier and to retard the diffusion of copper from substrate to gold coating in the temperature $200^{\circ}C$~$400^{\circ}C$. below $200^{\circ}C$gold coated contacts showed a stable and low contanct resistance, while above $200^{\circ}C$ rapid diffusion of copper formed copper oxide on the surface layer and raised the contact resistance. With the nickel thinkness of abount 5$\mu$m as an undercoat the gold thinkness of $0.5\mu$m, showed satistactory (less than 1 m$\Omega$) contact resistance below 20$0^{\circ}C$ and corresponding gold thinkness increased to 1.0 m at $300^{\circ}C$~$400^{\circ}C$.
A 12 ㎛ pixel-sized 360 × 240 microbolometer focal plane array (MBFPA) was fabricated using a complementary metaloxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible process. To release the MBFPA membrane, an amorphous carbon layer (ACL) processed at a low temperature (<400 ℃) was deposited as a sacrificial layer. The thermal time constant of the MBFPA was improved by using serpentine legs and controlling the thickness of the SiNx layers at 110, 130, and 150 nm on the membrane, with response times of 6.13, 6.28, and 7.48 msec, respectively. Boron-doped amorphous Si (a-Si), which exhibits a high-temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and CMOS compatibility, was deposited on top of the membrane as an IR absorption layer to provide heat energy transformation. The structural stability of the thin SiNx membrane and serpentine legs was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The fabrication yield was evaluated by measuring the resistance of a representative pixel in the array, which was in the range of 0.8-1.2 Mohm (as designed). The yields for SiNx thicknesses of SiNx at 110, 130, and 150 nm were 75, 86, and 86%, respectively.
Titanium exhibits substantial corrosion resistance, strength, and ductility, with a specific gravity of approximately 4.5 and a melting point of approximately 1800℃. It is currently used in aircraft parts and space development. This study considered the thermal characteristics, stealth effects of infrared thermal imaging cameras, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical conductivity of Ti-sputtered materials. Base materials of different densities and types were treated using titanium sputtering. Infrared thermal imaging showed a better stealth effect when the titanium layer was directed toward the outside. The film sample presented a better stealth effect than the fabrics did. In each of the samples subjected to titanium sputtering, when the titanium layer was directed outward, the untreated sample or exposed titanium layer showed surface temperatures lower than those of the samples with the titanium layer oriented toward the heat source. Additionally, after the titanium sputtering treatment, the films conducted electricity (low resistance) better than the fabrics did. All titanium-sputtered specimens presented reduced electromagnetic wave transmission and significantly reduced infrared transmission. These results are expected to apply to military uniforms (soldiers' protective clothing to gain the upper hand on the battlefield), medical sensors, multifunctional intelligent textiles and etc.
Stainless steels have been widely considered as metallic separators, due to their passive surface film, which is good for corrosion resistance. However, the high resistivity of the passive film increases interfacial contact resistance between the separators and electrodes. Stainless steels thermal spray coated with a mixture of tungsten carbide and stainless steel powders showed that the coated layer safely combined with the matrix but they suffered many internal defects including voids and cracks. Many cracks were formed in the coated layer and the interface of the matrix and the coated layer during the rolling process. The coated and rolled stainless steels showed lower interfacial contact resistance and corrosion resistance than bare stainless steel because of low resistivity of tungsten carbide and numerous defects, which caused crevice corrosion, in the coated layer.
In this study, the effects of Pd buffer layer on the oxidation resistance of Pt modified-pack aluminized Inconel 738LC, used for gas turbine, were investigated. Pd was electroplated on Inconel 738LC, and Pt was electroplated on the electroplated Pd surface. Thus, the thickness of electroplated Pt/Pd was $10\;{\mu}m$ and the atomic ratio of Pt : Pd was about 6 : 4. After Pt/Pd electroplating, Inconel 738LC was pack aluminized to form the oxidation resistant layer. To investigate the oxidation resistance of Pt/Pd modified-pack aluminized Inconel 738LC, iso-thermal oxidation and cyclic oxidation were performed. The iso-thermal oxdation and the cyclic oxidation data indicated that the Pt/Pd modified-pack aluminized Inconel 738LC was more oxidation resistant than the Pt modified-pack aluminized Inconel 738LC. It was thought that the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between Inconel 738LC and Pt was lowered by the Pd buffer layer.
