  • The role of thermal contact resistance between a casting and a metal mold as well as natural convection in the melt during solidification of a pure metal is numerically studied. Numerical simulation is performed for a rectangular cavity using the coordinate transformation by boundary-fitted coordinate and pure aluminum is used as the phase- change material. The influences of thermal contact resistance on the interface shape and position, solidified volume fraction, temperature field and local heat transfer are investigated.

  • This paper presents a new magneto-thermal finite element analysis for predicting the temperature rise of the EHV GIS busbar. Joule's heat due to current flowing in the main conductor and the heat due to the induced eddy current in the tank are calculated by the magnetic field analysis. And these heats are used as the input data to predict the temperature rise for the thermal analysis. However, it is not easy to apply the heat-transfer coefficients on the boundaries for the thermal analysis. In this paper, the heat-transfer coefficients on the boundaries are analytically calculated by applying the Nusselt number considering material constant and model geometry for the natural convection. The temperature distribution in the busbar by coupled magneto-thermal finite element analysis shows good agreement with the experimental data.

  • A numerical analysis has been carried out on forced convection heat transfer in the developing region of a porous channel. The channel is filled with an isotropic porous medium. At the channel walls, a uniform heat flux is given. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy equation and the LTNE model which does not employ the assumption of local thermal equilibrium between solid and fluid phases. Details of thermal fields in the developing region are examined over wide ranges of the thermal parameters. The numerical solutions at the fully developed region are compared with the previous analytical solutions. The correlation for predicting local Nusselt number in a porous channel is proposed.

  • As an early stage in the development of a water calorimeter, this study established a computer simulation methodology for analyzing the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter based on radiation transport and energy deposition. As a result, this study developed a method wherein the energy deposition distribution, which is obtained by applying Monte Carlo methods in water calorimeters, is directly used as a heat source for the thermal analysis model. Based on the proposed method, heat transfer in a water vessel and the effect of thermistor self-heating were analyzed. Through an analysis of the water velocities with and without a water vessel, it was found that a water vessel can serve as a convection barrier. Furthermore, it was confirmed that when considering thermistor self-heating, the water temperature change at the thermistor location is 0.219 mK higher compared to that when the thermistor was not considered. Therefore, thermistor self-heating must be considered to analyze the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter more accurately.

  • This paper describes a dynamic thermal model for a representative dual axis rotational Chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) tool. The model is one-dimensional but configured in the two-dimensional space and consists of three sub-models (pad, wafer and slurry fluid), with the first and the second that are time-dependent heat conduction-convection models with linear stationary (wafer) and nonlinear moving (pad) boundary conditions, and the last one that is a heat transport-convection model (slurry fluid). The modeling approach is validated by comparing the simulation results with available experimental data.

  • A field test was peformed to estimate the thermal performance of the forced convection electric air heater by the experiment. Air temperature, flow rate and electrical power input were measured with the related measurement sensors, and acquisition methods for the measured data were studied to effectively estimate the thermal performance of the tested air heater. To determine the mean air temperature at the flow cross-section, measuring positions were chosen by considering the flow velocity profile and the equally divided cross-sectional area. From the experimental results, thermal efficiency is obtained as an indication of the tested electric air heater performance.

  • The natural convection heat transfer in a vertical plate with discrete heat sources was studied experimentally. The particular interest was the thermal interaction of the heat sources. In this study, the radiative and conductive heat transfer were considered as heat loss, Thus, the net convective heat transfer rate was presented as adiabatic temperature and thermal wake function. As a results, for non-uniform heating condition, heat input ratio(q1/q2) was most dominant parameter for the thermal wake function. The convective heat transfer rate is decreased with the increasing of channel ratio. For the range of $7.50{\times}10^5<Rac<8.66{\times}10^6$, a useful correlation was proposed as a function of channel Rayleigh number.

  • Pipe cooling method is widely used for reduction of hydration heat and control of cracking in mass concrete structures. However, in order to effectively apply pipe cooling systems to concrete structures, the coefficient of flow convection relating the thermal transfer between inner stream of pipe and concrete must be estimated. In this study, a device measuring the coefficient of flow convection was developed. Since a variation of thermal distribution caused by pipe cooling has a direct effect on internal forced flows, the developed testing device is based on the internal forced flow concept. Influencing factors on the coefficient of flow convection are mainly flow velocity, pipe diameter and thickness, and pipe material. Using experimental results from the developed device, the coefficient of flow convection was calculated. Finally, a general prediction model was proposed by theoretical procedures. The proposed prediction model is able to estimate the coefficient of flow convection with flow velocity and material properties of pipe. From comparison with experimental results, the coefficient of flow convection by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.

  • A numerical investigation is made of unsteady double-diffusive convection of a Boussinesq fluid in a rectangular cavity subject to time-periodic thermal excitations. The fluid is initially stratified between the top endwall of low solute concentration and the bottom endwall of high solute concentration. A time-dependent heat flux varying in a square wave fashion, is applied on one sidewall to induce buoyant convection. The influences of the imposed periodicity on double-diffusive convection are scrutinized. A special concern is on the occurrence of resonance that the fluctuations of flow and attendant heat and mass transfers are mostly amplified at certain eigenmodes of the fluid system. Numerical solutions are analyzed to illustrate the characteristic features of resonant convection.
