  • Buckling and free vibration behavior of a laminated cylindrical panel exposed to non-uniform thermal load is addressed in the present study. The approach comprises of three portions, in the first portion, heat transfer analysis is carried out to compute the non-uniform temperature fields, whereas second portion consists of static analysis wherein stress fields due to thermal load is obtained, and the last portion consists of buckling and prestressed modal analyzes to capture the critical buckling temperature as well as first five natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. Finite element is used to perform the numerical investigation. The detailed parametric study is carried out to analyze the effect of nature of temperature variation across the panel, laminate sequence and structural boundary constraints on the buckling and free vibration behavior. The relation between the buckling temperature of the panel under uniform temperature field and non-uniform temperature field is established using magnification factor. Among four cases considered in this study for position of heat sources, highest magnification factor is observed at the forefront curved edge of the panel where heat source is placed. It is also observed that thermal buckling strength and buckling mode shapes are highly sensitive to nature of temperature field and the effect is significant for the above-mentioned temperature field. Furthermore, it is also observed that the panel with antisymmetric laminate has better buckling strength. Free vibration frequencies and the associated mode shapes are significantly influenced by the non-uniform temperature variations.

  • The heat generated by the brake system of vehicles results in reduction of friction force on the brake surface and vibration during a braking. To solve these problems, extensive research for the brake shape has been conducted such as drilling cooling holes on the brake disc, accommodating ventilated holes and etc. In this study, we suggest the circumferential pressing type brake disc in order to improve its cooling performance. In order to compare the cooling-down efficiency between the conventional side-pressing type and the circumferential-pressing type, we adopted the FMVSS 105-77 as thermal analysis conditions and This newly proposed concept has been verified using Thermal-structure Coupled Field Analysis along with comparative analysis with the existing ventilated disk.

  • The evaluation of the indoor environment of the Assembly Hall in the University, which is designed to be a large space, requires efficient design of its heating system that takes into consideration natural convection and the characteristics of the occupant's spaces. Indoor thermal environment was measured in the field and simulated with CFD code. The estimations of temperature distribution and indoor airflow distribution must be carried out simultaneously, as the thermal stratification is induced by natural convection flows. In order to simulate the even distribution of factors affecting the indoor environment, including temperature and airflow, Phoenics is used. The turbulent flow model adopted is the RNG k- model. The inlets and outlets of the air-conditioning systems, material and thermal properties, and the size of the test room ($35m{\times}18m{\times}10m$) are used for the simulation. Since the Assembly Hall is symmetric, half of the space is simulated. A Cartesian grid is used for calculation and the number of grids are respectively $60{\times}45{\times}35$. The results of the computer simulation during winter conditions are compared with the measurements at the typical points in the assembly hall with the heating system. After evaluating the results of the computer simulations, the methods of the heating system and layout are suggested.

  • In this research, magnetoresistance (MR) ratio (MR), resistivity, and exchange coupling field $(H_{ex})$ behaviors for sputter deposited spin valves with FeMn antiferromagnetic layer have been extensively investigated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) as well as conventional annealing (CA) method. 10 s of RTA revealed that interdiffusion was not significant up to $325^{\circ}C$ at the interfaces between the layers when the RTA time was short. The MR of FeMn spin valves were reduced when the spin valves were exposed to temperature of $250^{\circ}C$, even for a short time period of 10 s prior to CA. $H_{ex}$ was maintained up to $325^{\circ}C$ of CA when the specimen was subjected to 10 s of RTA at $200^{\circ}C$ prior to CA, which is $25^{\circ}C$ higher than the result obtained from the CA without prior RTA. Therefore, the stability of $H_{ex}$ could be enhanced by a prior RTA before performing CA up to annealing temperature of $325^{\circ}C$. MR and sensitivity of the specimens annealed without magnetic field up to $275^{\circ}C$ were recovered to the values prior to CA, but $H_{ex}$ was not recovered. This means that reduced MR sensitivity and MR during the device fabrication can be recovered by a field RTA.

  • The heating produced by the absorption of radiofrequency (RF) has been considered a secondary undesirable effect during MRI procedures. In this work, we have measured the power absorbed by distilled water, glycerol and egg-albumin during NMR and non-NMR experiments. The samples are dielectric and examples of different biological materials. The samples were irradiated using the same RF pulse sequence, whilst the magnetic field strength was the variable to be changed in the experiments. The measurements show a smooth increase of the thermal power as the magnetic field grows due to the magnetoresistive effect in the copper antenna, a coil around the probe, which is directly heating the sample. However, in the cases when the magnetic field was the adequate for the NMR to take place, some anomalies in the expected thermal powers were observed: the thermal power was higher in the cases of water and glycerol, and lower in the case of albumin. An ANOVA test demonstrated that the observed differences between the measured power and the expected power are significant.

  • Vacuum deposited copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) was placed as a thin interlayer between indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode and a hole transporting layer (HTL) in a multi-layered, organic, light-emitting diode (OLEOs). The well-stacked CuPc layer increased the stability and efficiency of the devices. Thermal annealing after CuPc deposition and magnetic field treatment during CuPc deposition were performed to obtain a stacked-CuPc layer; the former increased the stacking density of the CuPc molecules and the alignment of the CuPc film. Thermal annealing at about 100$^{circ}C$ increased the current flow through the CuPc layer by over 25$\%$. Surface roughness decreased from 4.12 to 3.65 nm and spikes were lowered at the film surface as well. However, magnetic field treatment during deposition was less effective than thermal treatment. Eventually, a higher luminescence at a given voltage was obtained when a thermally-annealed CuPc layer was placed in the present, multi-layered, ITO/CuPc/NPD/Alq3/LiF/AI devices. Thermal annealing at about 100$^{circ}C$ for 3 h produced the most efficient, multi-layered EL devices in the present study.

  • A Green's function approach based on the laminate theory is adopted for solving the two-dimensional unsteady temperature field and the associated thermal stresses in an infinite plate made of functionally graded material (FGM). All material properties are assumed to depend only on the coordinate x (perpendicular to the surface). The unsteady heat conduction equation is formulated into an eigenvalue problem by making use of the eigenfunction expansion theory and the laminate theory. The eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem for each layer constitute the Green's function solution for analyzing the two-dimensional unsteady temperature. The associated thermoelastic field is analyzed by making use of the thermal stress function. Numerical analysis for a FGM plate is carried out and effects of material properties on unsteady thermoelastic behaviors are discussed.

  • Thermal pasteurization has been effectively used for decades as a method to extend the shelf life of milk and to inactivate any pathogenic bacteria that it may contain; however, it can negatively affect the nutritional properties of milk. In recent years, the food industry has sought new, less aggressive technologies that affect food freshness and its nutritive and health benefits less significantly. Various means have been used to extend the shelf life of dairy foods, such as high-pressure processing, irradiation, ohmic heating, and pulsed electric field (PEF) technologies. Of these, PEF technologies are potential alternatives to traditional thermal milk pasteurization, owing to their advantages in minimizing sensory and nutritional damage. In this review, we have primarily focused on the feasibility of applying PEF technologies to the sterilization of dairy products and briefly discussed whether they should be adopted for use in the dairy beverage industry in the future.

  • The two-dimensional deformation of a homogeneous, isotropic thermoelastic half-space with voids with variable modulus of elasticity and thermal conductivity subjected to thermomechanical boundary conditions has been investigated. The formulation is applied to the coupled theory(CT) as well as generalized theories: Lord and Shulman theory with one relaxation time(LS), Green and Lindsay theory with two relaxation times(GL) Chandrasekharaiah and Tzou theory with dual phase lag(C-T) of thermoelasticity. The Laplace and Fourier transforms techniques are used to solve the problem. As an application, concentrated/uniformly distributed mechanical or thermal sources have been considered to illustrate the utility of the approach. The integral transforms have been inverted by using a numerical inversion technique to obtain the components of displacement, stress, changes in volume fraction field and temperature distribution in the physical domain. The effect of dependence of modulus of elasticity on the components of stress, changes in volume fraction field and temperature distribution are illustrated graphically for a specific model. Different special cases are also deduced.

  • This paper presents an analytical noise model for the drain thermal noise, the induced gate noise, and their correlation coefficient in deep-submicron MOSFETs, which is valid in both linear region and saturation region. The impedance field method was used to calculate the external drain thermal noise current. The effect of channel length modulation was included in the analytical equation. The noise behavior of MOSFETs with decreasing channel length was successfully predicted from our model.
