The interfacial thermal resistance of pristine and defective carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in low-density polyethylene matrix is studied in this paper. Interface thermal resistance in nanosystems is one of the most important factors that lead to the large variation in thermal conductivities in literature and the novelty of this paper lies in the estimation of the interfacial thermal resistance for defective nanotubes-systems. Thermal properties of CNT nanostructures are estimated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the simulations were carried out for various temperatures by rescaling the velocities of carbon atoms in the nanotube. This paper also deals with the mesoscale thermal conductivities of composite systems, using effective medium theories by considering the size effect in the form of interfacial thermal resistance and also using the conventional micromechanical methods like Hashin-Shtrikman bounds and Wakashima-Tsukamoto estimates.
The thermal behavior of power modules is an important criterion for the design of cooling systems and optimum thermal structure of these modules. An important consideration for high power and high frequency design is the spacing between semiconductor devices, substrate structure and influence of the boundary condition in the case. This study focuses on the thermal behavior of hybrid power modules to establish a simplified method that allows temperature estimation in different module components without decapsulation. This study resulted in a correction of the junction temperature values estimated from the transient thermal impedance of each component operating alone. The corrections depend on mutual thermal coupling between different chips of the hybrid structure. A new experimental technique for thermal mutual evaluation is presented. Notably, the classic analysis of thermal phenomena in these structures, which was independent of dissipated power magnitude and boundary conditions in the case, is incorrect.
A one-dimensional heat transfer model for the vertical borehole system is derived in this study to predict the thermal behavior of the system and surrounding soil. In this model the U-tube is replaced with one effective tube of effective diameter which is surrounded by concentric grout region. All thermal resistances of borehole are counted in the grout region with effective thermal conductivity of grout. Effective thermal conductivity of grout and sand are calculated through parameter estimation. The validity of this model is accomplished through comparison of the predicted temperature profiles of the model with experimental data.
In this paper, the Ni-Co alloy was used for thermal stability estimation comparison with Ni structure. The proposed Ni/Ni-Co structure exhibited wider range of rapid thermal process windows, lower sheet resistance in spite of high temperature annealing up to $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, more uniform interface via FE-SEM analysis, NiSi phase peak. Therefore, The proposed Ni/Ni-Co structure is highly promising for highly thermal immune Ni-silicide for nano-scale MOSFET technology.
The effect of (1) phonon dispersion in thermal conductivity model and (2) the differentiation of group velocity and phase velocity for Ge is examined. The results show drastic change of thermal conductivity regardless of using same relaxation time model. Also the contribution of transverse acoustic (TA) phonon and longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon is changed by considering more rigorous dispersion model. Holland model underestimates the scattering rate for high frequency TA, so misleading conclusion, i.e. TA is dominant heat transfer mode at high temperature. But the actual reduction of thermal conductivity is much larger than the estimation by Holland model and high frequency TA is no more dominant heat transfer mode. Another heat transfer mechanism may exist for high temperature. Two possible explanations are (1) high frequency LA by Umklapp scattering and (2) optical phonon.

A microcapsule water slurry is a latent heat-storage material having a low melting point. In this study, the thermal properties of a microcapsule water slurry are measured. The physical properties of the test microcapsule water slurry, i.e., thermal conductivity, specific heat, latent heat, and density, are measured, and the results are discussed for the temperature region of solid and liquid phases of the dispersion material (paraffin). It is clarified that Eucken's equation can be applied to the estimation of the thermal conductivity of the microcapsule water slurry. Useful correlation equations of the thermal properties of the microcapsule water slurry are proposed in terms of the temperature and concentration ratio of the microcapsule water slurry constituents.
Ceramic honeycomb structures have performed successfully as catalyst supports for meeting hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrous emissions standards for gasoline-powered vehicles. Three-way catalyst converter has to withstand high temperature and thermal stress due to pressure fluctuations and vibrations. Thermal stress constitutes a major portion of the total stress which the ceramic catalyst support experiences in service. In this study, temperature distribution was measured at ceramic catalyst supports. Thermal durability was evaluated by power series dynamic fatigue damage model. Radial temperature gradient was higher than axial temperature gradient. Thermal stresses depended on direction of elastic modulus. Axial stresses are higher than tangential stresses. Tangential and axial stresses remained below thermal fatigue threshold in all engine operation ranges.
The borehole heat exchanger of Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) system should be sustainable and cost effective for long term operation. To guaranty the performance of the system thermal Response Tests (TRTs) with simple recommended procedures have been applied in many countries. Korea government developed a standard TRT procedure in order to control the quality on GHP projects. In the TRT procedure interpretation method has a rule that data set has to be interpreted by the line source model(LSM). The LSM employes some assumptions that surrounding medium is homogeneous and the line source is infinite and constant heat flux, however real ground condition is unisotropic and heterogeneous, and showing regional or local ground water flows in many cases. We need to develope improved evaluation models to estimate accurate ground thermal conductivity with respect to geological and influence of ground water because current TRT standard test procedure has limitations to be applied for every locations and system. This study surveyed the uncertainty of the thermal parameters from the interpretation method considering different evaluation period. The interpretation of 208 TRT data sets represents limitations of LSM application that some obtained ground thermal conductivities are statistically unstable and convergence time of ground thermal conductivity over test period shows trends responding the length of test period. This evaluation study will be helpful to provide some effective procedure for the thermal parameter estimation and to complement current TRT standard procedure.
The effects of thermal properties on the crystallization behavior of $CaMgSi_2O_6$ glass-ceramics were investigated as a function of sintering temperature from 800$^{\circ}C$ to 900$^{\circ}C$. The crystallization behavior of the specimens depended on the sintering temperature, which could be evaluated from the differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. With increasing sintering temperature, the thermal conductivity of the sintered specimens increased, while the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the sintered specimens decreased. These results could be attributed to the increase of crystallization, confirmed from the estimation by density measurements. Also, the thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity of the sintered specimens were discussed with relation to the sintering temperature. Typically, a thermal conductivity of 3.084 $W/m^{\circ}C$, CTE of 8.049 $ppm/^{\circ}C$, thermal diffusivity of 1.389 $mm^2/s$ and specific heat capacity of 0.752 $J/g^{\circ}C$ were obtained for $CaMgSi_2O_6$ specimens sintered at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.
