Conceptual Studies of Combined-Cycle Engine

  • Conceptual studies of a combined-cycle engine have been conducted. Herein, the results are presented. The engine is composed of ejector-jet, ramjet, scramjet and rocket modes, and will be mounted on the Single-Stage-to-Orbit aerospace plane. Propellants are hydrogen and oxygen. Calculated engine thrust performances and cooling requirement of the engine are presented. Pitching moment of the plane with the engine will be balanced even in the vacuum condition. The experimental results of the inlet and the ejector-jet, ramjet and scramjet modes are presented. The effect of the airframe configuration on the engine performance and the thermal environment in the in-side of the plane are also presented. Through the investigations, possibilities of the combined-cycle engine and the aerospace plane are being made clear now.

  • In this paper we investigated the method of examining the accelerated life test on LED traffic signal module by the temperature. The longevity presumption of the LED type signal light by a general heat cycle test used and executed cycle when it was done to longevity by the heat cycle test number and the acceleration factor of a real system requirements of this heat cycle test. Therefore, it reports on the introduction of the acceleration type from which the LED traffic signal module is done here to clarify the above-mentioned acceleration factor with the object and the acceleration factor is requested the test atmosphere actually in the system requirements.

Cycle Analysis on LNG Boil-off Gas Re-Liquefaction Plant

  • Cycle analysis was performed in order to find the optimum design point of the LNG Boil-off gas re-liquefaction system. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the system could be defined by three state variables. Thus the system performance could be described by the three cold endpoint temperatures of the three-pass heat exchanger. This enabled us to investigate the cycle performance in terms of the heat exchanger parameters. To get access to the cycle states of higher system performances, larger heat exchangers were found necessary. Also the thermal pinch in cryogenic heat exchangers was found to act as a limiting factor to the system performance.

  • Thermal and electrochemical properties were discussed with tris(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)Phosphine (TTMPP) as a flame retradant additive for Li-ion battery. TTMPP showed excellent thermal stability with charged cathodes. Addition of 1 wt.% of the additive to the electrolyte improved the thermal stability without damaging the performance of the battery. The oxygne evolution reaction delayed nearly by $60^{\circ}C$. The capacity retention ratio in cycle life tests of the battery with 1 wt.% TTMPP was slightly improved comparing to the no additive cells.

  • Concrete structures often present volumetrical changes particularly due to thermal and moisture related shrinkages. Volumetric instability is detrimental to the performance and durability of concrete structures because structural elements are usually restrained. These restrained shrinkages develope tensile stresses which often results in cracking in combination with the low fracture resistance of concrete. Early-age defects in high-performance concrete due to thermal and autogenous deformation shorten the life cycle of concrete structures. Thus, it is necessary to examine the behavior .of early-age concrete at the stages of design and construction. The purpose of this study was to propose a shrinkage models of VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) at early-age considering thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkage.

CRYOGENIC AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURE CYCLING OF CARBON/POLYMER COMPOSITES (탄소/고분자 복합재료의 극저온-고온 싸이클링)

  • An apparatus was developed to repetitively apply a $-196^{\circ}C$ thermal load to coupon-sized mechanical test specimens. Using this device, IM7/5250-4 (carbon / bismaleimide) cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates were submerged in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) 400 times. Ply-by-ply micro-crack density, laminate modulus, and laminate strength were measured as a function of thermal cycles. Quasi-isotropic samples of IM7/977-3 (carbon / epoxy) composite were also manually cycled between liquid nitrogen and an oven set at $120^{\circ}C$ for 130 cycles to determine whether including elevated temperature in the thermal cycle significantly altered the degree or location of micro-cracking. In response to thermal cycling, both materials micro-cracked extensively in the surface plies fellowed by sparse cracking of the inner plies. The tensile modulus of the IM7/5250-4 specimens was unaffected by thermal cycling, but the tensile strength of two of the lay-ups decreased by as much as 8.5%.

  • A turbocharger is subjected to rapid temperature changes during thermal cyclic loads. In order to predict the thermo-mechanical failures, it's very important to estimate temperature distributions under the thermal shock test. This paper suggest the finite element techniques with the temperature histories, a constitutive material model and the mechanical constraints to calculate the thermal stresses and plastic strain distributions for the turbine housing. The first step was to develop a simple coupon approach to represent the failure mechanism of the classical design shapes and secondly applied the actual turbocharger to predict and validate the weak locations under the physical engine test.

  • This study is focussed on the numerical prediction of the thermal fatigue life of a ${\mu}BGA$(Micro Ball Grid Array) solder joint. Numerical method is used to perform three-dimensional finite element analysis for Sn-37mass%Pb. Sn-3.5mass%Ag solder alloys during the given thermal cycling. Strain values, along with the result of mechanical fatigue tests for solder alloys were then used to predict the solder joint fatigue life using the Coffin-Manson equation. In this study, a practical correlation for the prediction of the thermal fatigue life is suggested by using the dimensionless variable $\gamma$. As a result. it could be found that Sn-3.5mass%Ag has longer fatigue life than Sn-37mass%Pb in low cycle fatigue. In addition. the result with ${\gamm}ashow$a good agreement with the FEA results.

  • In this study, a thermal control system which applied a Peltier device for the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) machine is to be designed. Here in order for it to easily follow the characteristics of the thermal cycle existing for gene amplification of the PCR sample, a PCR control board utilizing a thermal sensor, a Peltier, and a 8 bit microprocessor is made up. Especially a fuzzy type PD control algorithm is applied periodically in time response, and control system is implemented. For that matter, the characteristic data of subject system is obtained and analysed to begin with. Based on this analysed data, the proposed control algorithm is applied and an evaluation of the performance of the whole system take place through the PC.
