  • This experimental study is aimed at evaluating the hydrodynamic performance of newly designed self-expandable graft stents under steady flow condition. Two graft stents with different coating materials and a bare TiNi metallic stent for comparison test were used in the experiment. Pressure variation and velocity distribution at the upstream and downstream of the stents were measured at flow rates of 5, 10, and 15 l/min, respectively. Pressure loss due to insertion of the stent increased with increasing flow rate exponentially as expected. At a flow rate of 15 l/min, pressure loss of Polyure-thane(PU)-coated graft stent was 6 times higher than that of TiNi metallic stent, while the pressure loss of a porous Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)-coated graft stent was comparable to a bare TiNi metallic stent. Velocity profiles of the porous PTFE-coated graft stent were similar to those of a bare TiNi metallic stent regardless of flow rate. Furthermore, the velocity profile of PU-coated graft stent revealed an asymmetrical and relatively low central velocity at a higher flow rate than 10 1/min, expecially, where the effects resulted in increases of wall shear stress and normal stress. The worse hydrodynamic behavior of PU-coated graft stent than the other two stents might be attributed to formation of folds due to poor flexibility of coated material when inserting the graft stent into the pipe with a more smaller size, which later gave rise non-symmetry of flow area, increase of surface roughness and jet flow via the crevice between the stent and cylinder wall.

  • A Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ (BIT) thin film is prepared by sol-gel method using acetate precursors and evaluated whether it could be applied to NVFRAM (Non-Volatile Ferroelectric RAM). The drying and the annealing temperature are 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$, respectively and they are determined from the DT-TG (Differential Thermal-Thermal Gravimetric) analysis. The BIT thin film deposited on Pt/Ta/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrate shows orthorhombic perovskite phase. The grain size and the surface roughness are about 100 nm and 70.2$\AA$, respectively. The dielectric constant and the loss tangent at 10 KHz are 176 and 0.038, respectively, and the leakage current density at 100 ㎸/cm is 4.71 $mutextrm{A}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In the results of hysteresis loops measured at $\pm$250 ㎸/cm, the remanent polarization (Pt) and the coercive field (Ec) are 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 86.3 ㎸/cm, respectively. After applying 10$^{9}$ square pulses of $\pm$5V, the remanent polarization of the BIT thin film decreases as much as about 33% from 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of initial state to 3.95 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • An numerical analysis of sediment-laden flow is carried out, and results are compared with the experiments of Coleman(1981, 1986) that included the several cases varying sediment size and quantity in open channel flow. K-$\omega$ turbulence model is selected for the fully turbulent flow field, and the concentration equation considering the fall velocity is adopted for the concentration field. The model of Einstein and Chien(1955) is applied to couple the velocity field and the concentration field. Most of researches have been carried out without considering the bed-load thickness, but it is found that the bed-load thickness cannot be ignored in case of a large amount of sediment or a large size of it. The bed-load thickness and surface roughness are considered in this study. Here, $\beta$ value, which is defined by the reciprocal of turbulent Schmidt number and is related with the concentration profile, is found to be varied according to the sediment size and quantity. Even though most of researchers have insisted that $\beta$ had always larger than 1.0, it may be concluded that $\beta$ can have smaller value than 1.0, that is coincident with the report of recent research.

  • Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS) is the main payload of the first Korean scientific satellite, KAISTSAT-4, which will be launched in 2002. Among the optical parts, parabolic cylinder mirror does not have any heritage from previous astronomical missions, so the manufacturing and testing process itself is a challenging issue. We describe the method of manufacturing and measuring of the off-axis parabolic cylinder mirror and our initial experiments to establish the entire manufacturing process. Using the method, the profile error can meet the specification of $lambda$ per cm which is closely related with the astronomical performances. In case of the surface roughness, temperature controlled pitch polishing reduces $R_{q}$ under 1 nm implying that scattering in the entire spectral range of FIMS is less than 2% of the incident UV light.

  • Ultra thin TiN films (50∼700nm thickness) were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel substrates using a reactive DC magnetron sputtering deposition process to investigate their wear and friction properties. Dry sliding wear tests of the films were carried out against hardened steel and alumina counterparts using a pin-on-disk type wear tester at room temperature. Variation of friction coefficient was measured as a function of film thickness, load, sliding speed and roughness of the substrate. Worn surfaces of the film were examined by a scanning electron microscope. Wear resistance of the TiN film increased with the increase of the film thickness. The TiN film showed relatively high wear resistance in spite of its ultra thin thickness when it is mated by the steel counterpart, while it showed poor wear resistance with the alumina counterpart. The good wear resistance with the steel counterpart was explained by the formation of oxide layers on the film surface and sound interface character between the ultra thin film and the substrate.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate newly fabricated tricalcium phosphate(TCP)/chitosan microgranuls as bone substitutes. TCP/chitosan microgranules were fabricated by dropping TCP-chitosan suspension into the NaOH/ethanol solution. The size of microgranules could be controllable via airflow rate. PDGF-BB was loaded into the fabricated granules via freeze-drying methods(300 ng/20 mg). To evaluate cell proliferation, cultured osteoblasts cell lines(MC3T3-El) was dropped on the BioOss(R), chitosan microgranules, TCP/chitosan microgranules and cultured for 1, 7 , 14, and 28 days. Scanning electron microscopic observation was done after 7 days of culture and light microscopic examination was done after 28 days of culture. PDGF-BB release from the microgranules was tested. Rabbit calvarial defects(8 mm in diameter) were formed and chitosan, TCP/chitosan, PDGF-TCP/chitosan microgranules, and BioGran(R) were grafted to test the ability of new bone formation. At SEM view, the size of prepared microgranules was 250-1000 um and TCP powders were observed at the surface of TCP/chitosan microgranules. TCP powders gave roughness to the granules and this might help the attachment of osteoblasts. The pores formed between microgranules might be able to allow new bone ingrowth and vascularization. There were no significant differences in cell number among BioOss(R) and two microgranules at 28 day. Light and scanning electron microscopic examination showed that seeded osteoblastic cells were well attached to TCP/chitosan microgranules and proliferated in a multi-layer. PDGF-BB released from TCP/chitosan microgranules was at therapeutic concentration for at least 1 week. In rabbit calvarial defect models, PDGF-TCP/chitosan microgranules grafted sites showed thicker bone trabeculae pattern and faster bone maturation than others. These results suggested that the TCP/chitosan microgranules showed the potential as bone substitutes.

  • $BiFeO_3$ (BFO) thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si(100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method at room temperature. The influence of the flow rate of $O_2$ gas on the preparation of $BiFeO_3$ thin films was studied. XRD results indicate that the $BiFeO_3$ thin films were crystallized to the perovskite structure with the presence of small amount of impurity phases. The flow rate of $O_2$ gas has great affect on the microstructures and magnetic properties of $BiFeO_3$ thin films. As flow rate of $O_2$ gas increased, roughness and grain size of the thin films increased. $BiFeO_3$ thin films exhibited weak ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. The PFM images revealed correlation between the surface morphology and the piezoresponse, indicating that the piezoelectric coefficient is related to microstructure.

  • The pollutants (Rn, CH, CO, HS, radioactive gas from radiolysis) were generated from the process of construction and operation of underground repository, and after disposal of low-intermediate radioactive waste inside there must be controlled by a ventilation system to distribute them in area where enough air is supported. Therefore, a suitable technical approach is needed especially at an underground repository that is equipped with many entry tunnels, storage tunnels, exhaust-blowing tunnels, and vertical shafts in complicated network form. For the technical approach of such a ventilation system, WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) in U. S and SFR (Slutforvar for Reaktorafall) low-intermediate radioactive waste repository in Sweden were selected as the models, for calculating the required air quantity, organizing a ventilation network considering cross section, length, surface roughness of the air passage, and describing a calculation of resistance of each circuit. Based on these procedures, a best suited ventilation system was completed with designing proper capacity of fans and operating plan of vertical shafts. As a result of comparing the two repositories based on the geometry dimensions and ventilation facility equipment operation, more parallel circuit as in WIPP, brought decrease in resistance for entire system leading to reduce of operating costs, and the larger cross-sectional area of the SFR, the greater the percentage of disposal capacity. Accordingly, the mixture of parallel circuit of WIPP repository for reducing resistance and SFR repository formation for enlargement of disposal capacity would be the most rational and efficient ventilation system.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of denture cleansers on Candida albicans biofilm formation over resilient liners and to evaluate compatibility between resilient liners and denture cleansers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Acrylic resin (Lucitone 199$^{(R)}$) and 3 resilient liners (COE-SOFT$^{TM}$, GC RELINE$^{TM}$ and SOFRELINER TOUGH TOUGH$^{(R)}$) were incubated in denture cleansers (Polident$^{(R)}$ and Cleadent$^{(R)}$) for 8 hours a day and in unstimulated saliva for 16 hours a day (n=25/gp) for 60 days. Two-way and three-way repeated measures ANOVA were performed to compare the surface roughness (Ra), pH and C. albicans binding level by radioisotope (${\alpha}$=0.05). The statistical significance of the relation between Ra and adhesion was evaluated by correlation analysis. RESULTS. The degree of Ra was significantly decreased in the following order: COE-SOFT$^{TM}$, acrylic resin, GC RELINE$^{TM}$ and SOFRELINER TOUGH$^{(R)}$. The immersion in denture cleansers significantly increased Ra of resilient liners, except for SOFRELINER TOUGH$^{(R)}$ in Cleadent$^{(R)}$. No significant differences in pH curves were observed among groups immersed in distilled water and denture cleansers. The binding levels of C. albicans were significantly decreased in the following order: COE-SOFT$^{TM}$, GC RELINE$^{TM}$, SOFRELINER TOUGH$^{(R)}$, and acrylic resin. The immersion in Cleadent$^{(R)}$ seemed to decrease C. albicans binding level on GC RELINE$^{TM}$ and SOFRELINER TOUGH$^{(R)}$. CONCLUSION. Based on the C. albicans binding levels results, it is not recommended to immerse COE-SOFT$^{TM}$ in denture cleansers, and GC RELINE$^{TM}$ and SOFRELINER TOUGH$^{(R)}$ should be immersed in Cleadent$^{(R)}$.

  • As device dimensions approach submicrometer size in ULSI, the demand for interlayer dielectric materials with very low dielectric constant is increased to solve problems of RC delay caused by increase in parasitic resistance and capacitance in multilevel interconnectins. Fluorinated amorphous carbon in one of the promising materials in ULSI for the interlayer dielectric films with low dielectric constant. However, poor thermal stability and adhesion with Si substrates have inhibited its use. Recently, amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) film as a buffer layer between the Si substrate and a-C:F has been introduced because it improves the adhesion with Si substrate. In this study, therfore, a-C:F/a-C:H films were deposited on p-type Si(100) by ECRCVD from $C_2F_6, CH_4$and $H_2$gas source and investigated the effect of forward power and composition on the thickness, chemical bonding state, dielectric constant, surface morphology and roughness of a-C:F films as an interlayer dielectric for ULSI. SEM, FT-IR, XPS, C-V meter and AFM were used for determination of each properties. The dielectric constant in the a-C:F/a-C:H films were found to decrease with increasing fluorine content. However, the dielectric constant increased after furnace annealing in $N_2$atomosphere at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1hour due to decreasing of flurorine content. However, the dielectric constant increased after furnace annealing in $N_2$atmosphere at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1hour due to decreasing of fluorine concentration.
