  • Recent advances in computer technologies support real-time image processing and special effects on personal computers. This paper presents and analyzes a real-time interactive video system. The motivation of this work is to realize an artistic concept that aims at transforming the timeline visual variations in a video of sea water waves into sound in order to provide an audience with an experience of overlapping themselves onto the nature. In practice, the video of sea water waves taken on a beach is processed using an optical flow algorithm in order to extract the information of visual variations between the video frames. This is then masked by the silhouette of an audience and the result is projected on a gallery space. The intensity information is extracted from the resulting video and translated into piano sounds accordingly. This work generates an interactive space realizing the intended concept.

  • In this paper, we propose a self instrument learning tool using a PC-based software and an external electronic keyboard instrument with USB interface to help primary school students to learn playing piano more easily and effectively. The PC-based learning software and the external electronic keyboard instrument interact through the USB interface. This tool has a help window to provide information how to play and support interesting game mode for exercise. The external electronic keyboard instrument receives a selective information through the USB interface and display it on LEDs and 7-segment for novices to easily know the relation between the notes and the positions in the keyboard. The external keyboard instrument can detect false inputs, display them on LEDs and on the information window. We implemented a self instrument learning system and our feasibility tests showed its validity of the self learning tool to improve the learning efficiency.

  • Currently, Korean society has seen a rapid increase in international marriages since the mid-1990s, and the number of their children entering school age has been increasing every year in recent years. With the growing number of students with parents from various social and cultural backgrounds in our society, the difficulties they face are emerging as a new social problem that we should pay attention to and solve. Although the difficulties they are experiencing vary depending on their parents' nationality, social, economic status, and attitude toward raising their children, it is generally reported that they are suffering from language barriers in elementary school, study barriers in high school, and friendship barriers in middle school. In particular, the school started this research based on the problem that when students from multi cultural families did not mix well with ordinary students and could not narrow the distance between them, they could become adults and enter society in the future, causing social conflict.

  • Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11) uses traditional TCP for reliable data transmission, But it brings the unintentional packet loss which is not congestion loss caused by handoff, interference, and fading in wireless LAN. In wireless LAN, TCP experiences performance degradation because it consumes that the cause of packet loss is congestion, and it decrease the sending rate by activating congestion control algorithm. This paper analyzes that correlation of throughput and buffer size for wireless buffer tuning. We find MBT (Maximum Buffer Threshold) which does not increase the throughput through the analysis, For calculation of MBT, we experiment the throughput by using high volume music data which is creased by real-time performance of piano. The experiment results is shown that buffer tuing based on MBT shows 20.3%, 21.4%, and 45.4% throughput improvement under 5ms RTT, 10ms RTT, and 20ms RTT, respectively, comparing with the throughput of operation system default buffer size, In addition, we describe that The setting of TCP buffer size by exceeding MBT does not have an effect on the performance of TCP.

  • In the past composers used to make music with classical instruments such as piano, violin, guitar, flute, drums, and other well-known tools. With the advent of digital technology many software programs were developed which allow musicians to compose tunes using personal computers. Many file formats were introduced such as NIFF, SMDL and MIDI but none besides MIDI has been successful. Recently MusicXML has emerged as a de-facto standard for the computer representation of music. This paper presents a brief description of the structure of the MusicXML format and describes the development of a music score editor based on MusicXML. We implemented a MusicXML-based score editing software using C# language and a feasibility test showed the efficiency of our proposed method.

As for the objectives, the result showed the highest needs was the ability to communicate with audience by expressing one's feeling. For the high school students, a large number items had significant differences between the necessary level and the current level. As for the contents, the highest needs were the class piano, second instrument, and the experience of the musical field. High school students needed the second instrument more than middle school students did. As for the teaching strategies, the highest needs were the autonomous choice by learners, the instruction pursuing learners' interests, and the field work. As for the evaluation, the highest needs were the peer evaluation and the evaluation on the collaborative performance or team work. As for the educational environment, the gifted in music strongly needed spaces to practice instruments. Additionally, high school students needed a space to perform like a concert hall. Thus the gifted curriculum in music must be thoroughly developed based on the result above.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the different environment among the young children of large and small cities and rural areas in Korea, in order to know how these different environment have an effect on the children's intellectual and emotional development. For this subjects, 2,700 questionares with 51 items were distributed to the infants' mothers in each area to interview and answer. About 1,800 questionaires were gathered from 3 metropolitan, 6 cities and 6 rural areas in (each 2 farming, fishing and mining villages) The results of analyzing these questionaires were like following; 1. The average number of children of each family was 2.5 in large cities, 3.0 in small cities and 3.6 in the rural areas. 2. White about 75% of infants' parents of large cities graduated college education, only 6% of the rural parents did it. Most infants' parents of the rural areas have only graduated the elementary school. 3. About 90% of the rural, small and large cities family have had radios and T.V sets, and 90% of infants watched T.V program for 2 hours a day in average. 4. While about 50% of large cities' young children were not reared by their mother's milk but by milk and other foods, about 95% of rural infants by breasting mills. 5. Young children of large cities were wearing about 5 months earlier than those of the rural. 6. While 20% children of cities were taught in the kindergarten, most children of the rural areas could not be taught in the kindergarten. 7. About 45% young children of the rural areas and cities were understood and taught reading, writing letters and numbers by their parents, brothers and sisters before entering primary school. 8. While 50% young children of large cities have had pianos and were taught music in kindergarten or piano tutor's, most of the rural areas have not had pianos and could not be taught music. 9. Most children's favorite music songs were T.V signals or C.M songs in both the rural and cities. 10. While most children of cities have had lots of children's pictures or fairy tale books. most infants of the rural areas have had nothing or a few. 11. As lots of infants could not find their pleasure resorts of sport tools outside, they used to play in side streets or publicroads with their friends. 12. While most infant's parents in cities wanted to make their infants lawyer or medicine doctor, most parents in rural areas wanted to make their children teacher or technician. 13. About a half of Korean infants have had their own rooms or have lived in it together with their brother or sister. In conclusion, as children of large cities have had more various kinds of cultural circumstances than the rural areas in aspects of cultural institutions' tools and environment of their parents' education, books, toys, pleasure resorts and their own rooms, the intellectual development of the former could be considered to surpass those of the latter. In other words, the average IQ points of urban's young children are 10 point higher than those of the rural areas, which means the better circumstance would affect the infant's intellectual development. Therefore, the government must support to make good circumstances of the children in the rural areas.
