  • The purpose of this study is to explore and compare the regional characteristics of textile industries and corresponding education systems in Korea and Italy. The Italian textile industry is well known for its continuous development of high quality textile fabrics and aesthetic fashion design. One of contributing factors for the success of Italian textile industry is its regional specialization of the industry and corresponding education systems. In particular, the regional education systems in Italy are designed to educate and supply labors necessary to the development of the regional textile industries. According to the study, this characteristic is well shown in their curriculum which emphasizes the practicality and corporation with the industry. In contrast, the Korean education system for the textile industry ignores the regional specialization and its curriculum is designed, in large part, to produce textile designers. This causes difficulties in meeting the various demands from the industry such as the textile planning, textile production, and textile marketing and sales. To solve the problems, we must encourage the industrial-educational corporation to promote the practicality of the textile education system and make diversification and specialization of the curriculum of textile education to cultivate men of talent, such as merchandisers, fashion coordinators, converters, stylists, and displayer, necessary to the development of the Korean textile industry.

  • This study discuses the strategies for the reestabisgment of Korean textile industry by emphasizing the area of textile design which plays an important role in developing textile materials. The textile industry in Korea has been in stagnancy for a long period of time and appears to find no answer to the problem. The big part of the problem is that the industry itself does not realize the importance of textile design and its management does not understand its critical role in contributing the growth of the industry. To develop textile design, first, we need to foster textile designers who have the creativity, an understanding of international trend and a mind f management. This can be achieved through an education system with a close tie to the textile industry. Second, we need to globalize our textile design in three aspects : design, technology and marketing. A balanced and harmonized progression of these three aspects will guarantee a successful globalization of textile design. This progression, however, demands creativity, identity, and interaction on the design side, digital and networking on the technology side, and culture marketing, brand value, and global agent networking on the marketing side.

  • This study concerns the demand for Korean textile products in the USA, Japan, EU from 1997 to 2000. The conclusion from this study is that demand for Korean textile products in the USA, Japan, and the EU will steadily decline through to the year 2000. And with this conclusions, in order to rejuvenate the textile industry, we have to consolidate the system of production and proceed with the rationalization of management departments in the industry and the reduction of costs and develop new products. Also, the global policy strategy of the textile industry should be strongly promoted on order to make the textile industry a strong industry in the 21 century.

  • To regain competitive advantages in the global textile industry the Korean textile firms need to strategically collaborate each other on developing partnership relations. This study, as a first step for developing a futuristic partnership between textile firms, examined the characteristics of current partnership relations among textile firms in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. Data were obtained from 163 textile firms in the region by a questionnaire survey. More than a half of the textile firms had a partnership experience in product manufacturing and wanted to have one in product development. Partnerships with firms in the same sub-industry showed the highest frequency even though various pairs were observed. Length of partnership was related with the history and size of the firm but not with partnership performance. Partnership itself affected neither the firm's perception of its competitive power nor the perceived intensity of industry competition.

  • This study investigates the awareness levels of Korean textile companies and develops appropriate response plans for the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement. The study also explores practical and realistic directions that the Korean textile industry must initiate. A qualitative study was conducted on 10 individuals for a more in-depth and demonstrative understanding that provide a better awareness on the responses of the textile industry towards the Korea-US FTA. The results of this study are as follows. First, the effect of the Korea-US FTA on the textile industry was insignificant. Second, industry members determined that fabric sectors and specialized fabrics (such as industrial materials and finished clothing products) could realize benefits through the Korea-US FTA. Third, industry members emphasize that the current focus is on FTAs by countries that have solidified their positions as manufacturing and sewing bases for the US and Europe (such as Southeast Asia) and not the Korea-US FTA. Based on results acquired through this study, the response measures to enter the U.S. market are as follows. First, the industry must develop high-performance and high value-adding direct export products suited to the needs of the US market in order to realize the benefits of the Korea-US FTA. Second, the industry and government must cooperate to actively host and participate in overseas trade shows that can actively open sales channels within the US. Third, the self-sustainability of textile companies must be cultivated through continuous and focused government training.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the sectors of Korean textile complex based on various economic characteristics and performances. The sectors in the textile complex differed in many aspects. Man-made fiber industry showed capital-intensive characteristics even though most of the sectors in the textile complex were labor-intensive. Textile industry is composed of weaving and spinning, knitting, dyeing and finishing sectors and even within the textile industry, each sector had different characteristics from each others. Weaving and spinning sector seemed to require relatively high capital investment, while dyeing and finishing was very labor-intensive. Labor-intensive apparel industry has faced decrease in labor-productivity while wage has increased. Slow growth in labor productivity in Korean textile complex was shown to be a more problem than increase in wage or ratio of labor cost to value added. Apparel companies appeared to be in better financial states than the textile companies, even though the exports of apparel products have decreased in the 1990s. However, in overall the financial states of the Korean textile complex were not as strong as those of the other manufacturing sectors.
