  • This study reviewed terahertz technologies of time domain spectroscopy, T-ray imaging, and high rate wireless data transfer. The main topics of the terahertz research area were investigation of materials and package modules for terahertz wave generation and detection, and setup of the terahertz system for time domain spectroscopy(TDS), T-ray imaging and sub-THz wireless communication. In addition to Poly-GaAs film as a photoconductive switching antenna material, a table-top scale for the THz-TDS/imaging system and terahertz continuous wave(CW) generation systems for sub-THz data transfer and narrow band T-ray imaging were designed. Dielectric properties of ferroelectric BSTO($Ba_xSr_{1-x}TiO_3$) films and chalcogenide glass systems were characterized with the THz-TDS system at the THz frequency range. Package modules for terahertz wave transmitter/receiver(Tx/Rx) photoconductive antenna were developed.

  • A new method on the evaluation of insulation oil was proposed. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was applied to investigate the properties of the insulating oil. For the diagnostics of oil degradation, three kinds of oils have been analyzed by THz-TDS. The degraded oil showed different optical and electrical constants compared with a new one. Generally, the power absorption coefficient, the refractive index, the dielectric constant and loss $tan{\delta}$ of the oil increase as the aging of insulating oil proceed. And the characteristics of two kind of insulation oil, 1-4 and 7-4, was compared in terahertz spectral region. Difference in refractive index and complex dielectric constant has been observed between the samples. The results of this study suggest that THz-TDS is a promising new means for evaluating degradation and identification of insulating oil.

  • High-speed high-resolution terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is demonstrated using the asynchronous-opticalsampling (AOS) method. A time-domain signal with a 10-ns time window is rapidly acquired by using two femtosecond lasers with slightly different repetition frequencies to generate and detect a terahertz pulse wave, without a mechanical delay stage. The spectrum obtained by the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) of the time-domain waveform has a frequency resolution of 100 MHz. The time resolution of our spectrometer is measured using the cross-correlation method to be 278 fs. A transmission spectrum of water vapor is measured and the absorption lines are analyzed in the frequency range from 0.1 to 1.2 THz.

  • One of the important applications of THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) is the detection of explosive materials through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Most recent THz spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples, where disorder effects contribute to line broadening, which results in the merging of individual resonances into relatively broad absorption features. To address this issue, we used the technique of parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) THz-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of three explosive materials: TNT, RDX, and HMX. The measurement method for PPWG THz-TDS used well-established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. All materials were characterized as powder layers in 112 ${\mu}m$ gaps in metal PPWG. To illustrate the PPWG THz-TDS method, we described our measurement by comparing the vibrational spectra of the materials, TNT, RDX, and HMX, applied as thin powder layers to a PPWG, or in conventional sample cell form, where all materials were placed in Teflon sample cells. The thin layer mass was estimated to be about 700 ${\mu}g$, whereas the mass in the sample cell was ~100 mg. In a laboratory environment, the absorption coefficient of an explosive material is essentially based on the mass of the material, which is given as: ${\alpha}({\omega})=[ln(I_R({\omega})/I_S({\omega}))]m$. In this paper, we show spectra of 3 different explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 THz measured using the PPWG THz-TDS.

  • Terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is applied in transmission to identify the five forms of modifications of furosemide and one commercial product from 0.3 THz to 1.6 THz at room temperature. The different absorption spectra of the different forms are sensitive to crystal structures. Density function theory (DFT) calculation was used to understand the vibrational modes of furosemide in the THz region. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD) was applied to confirm the different forms of modifications. The results demonstrate that THz-TDS is a potential analytical technique in investigating polymorphic forms in the pharmaceutical fields.

  • We have developed a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system for transmission and reflection measurements of metallic thin films. Using our THz-TDS system, we studied the conventional superconductor niobium (Nb) in the normal state in the spectral range from 5 to $50cm^{-1}$. Both the real and imaginary parts of the conductivity are acquired without Kramers-Kronig analysis. Nb exhibits a nearly frequency independent real conductivity spectrum in the terahertz range, with a very small imaginary part.

  • Using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), the power absorption and the real conductivity of silica sand are measured terahertz frequency range. It is impossible to measure the characterization of the silica sand by simple electrical measurements using mechanical contacts, e.g., Hail effect or four-point probe measurements. However, the THz-TDS technique can measure not only electrical but also optical characterization of the sample. Also this technique can measure frequency dependent results. Especially, the real conductivity was increased according to THz frequency this is unusual material compare with metal and semiconductor materials; the measured real conductivity are not followed by the simple Drude theory.

  • The spiropyran is a typical material having photodegradation properties in the process of photochromism. The spiropyran has been utilized in various applications such as optical switch, optical memories, and biosensor because of its remarkable stability, fast responsive time, stronger color change, and photo-induced controllability. However, the spriropyran is photodegraded by the repetitive optical irradiation. The photodegradation of spiropyran have been investigated by using UV-Visible spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy. Herein, the properties of spiropyran were characterized by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in the terahertz frequency region. In terahertz region, the measured absorbance of spiropyran was increased due to the photodegradation induced by the repetitive UV irradiation. The absorbance tendency of spiropyran in the terahertz frequency region was compared with that in the visible region, and they were completely opposite to each other.

  • Analysis of defect signals inside glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) was conducted through deconvolution of terahertz (THz) wave. The GFRP specimen with internal defects was manufactured and the THz signal was measured through the reflection mode of the Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system. For deconvolution of the measured THz signal, the peak position of the THz signal was amplified through Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) of the incident and detected THz signals. The position and intensity of the amplified peak were extracted as impulse, and the extracted signal of the impulse position was removed from the THz original signal. By repeating the process, the critical impulses, which represent boundary of the specimen, were derived. The deconvolution process was verified by confirming that the original THz signal without noise can be restored through the convolution of the critical impulses and the incident signal. From the derived critical impulses, the thickness of the internal defect in the GFRP was calculated through the detection time of impulses within 15 ㎛ accuracy.

  • We utilized terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to measure the thickness and electrical properties of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) films. This technique not only aligns well with traditional methods, such as haze-meter and transmission-densitometer measurements, but it also reveals the electrical properties and thickness of films down to a few tens of nanometers. The complex conductivity of the Ni-Cr thin films was extracted using the Tinkham formula. The experimental values closely aligned with the Drude model, indicating the reliability of our Ni-Cr film's electrical and optical constants. The thickness of Ni-Cr was estimated using the complex conductivity. These findings emphasize the potential of THz-TDS in quality control of metallic nanofilms, pointing toward an efficient and nondestructive test (NDT) for such analyses.
