Resin transfer molding (RTM) is one of the most popular processes for producing fiber reinforced polymer composites. In the manufacture of complex thick composite structures, analysis on flow front advancement on the resin impregnating the multi-layered fiber preform is helpful for the optimization of the process. In this study, three-dimensional mold filling simulation of RTM is carried out by using CVFEM (Control Volume Finite Element Method). On the assumption of isothermal flow of Newtonian fluid, Darcy’s law and continuity equation are used as governing equations. Different permeability tensors employed in each layer are obtained by experiments. Numerically predicted flow front is compared with experimental one in order to validate the numerical results. Flow simulations are conducted in the two mold geometries, rectangular plate and hollow cylinder. Permeability tensor of each layer preform in Cartesian coordinate system is transformed to cylinder coordinates system so that the flow within the multi-layered preforms of the hollow cylinder can be calculated exactly. Our emphasis is on the three dimensional flow analysis for circular three-dimensional braided preform, which shows outstanding mechanical properties such as high impact strength and toughness compared with other conventional two-dimensional laminar-structured preforms.
A two dimensional hierarchical elements are investigated for a use on the incompressible flow computation. The construction of hierarchical elements are explained through the tensor product of 1-D hierarchical functions, and a systematic treatment of essential boundary values has been developed for the degrees of freedom corresponding to higher order terms. The numerical study for the poisson problem showed that the present scheme can increase the convergence and accuracy of finite element solutions, and can be more efficient than the standard first order with many elements. Also, for Stokes and cavity flow cases, solutions from hierarchical elements showed better resolutions and future promises for higher order solutions.
Here, certain Ricci flow for Finsler n-manifolds is considered and deformation of Cartan hh-curvature, as well as Ricci tensor and scalar curvature, are derived for spaces of scalar flag curvature. As an application, it is shown that on a family of Finsler manifolds of constant flag curvature, the scalar curvature satisfies the so-called heat-type equation. Hence on a compact Finsler manifold of constant flag curvature of initial non-negative scalar curvature, the scalar curvature remains non-negative by Ricci flow and blows up in a short time.
Numerical prediction of the diffusion controlled transition in a turbine gas pass is important because it can change the local heat transfer rate over a turbine blade as much as three times. In this study, the gas flow over turbine blade is simplified to the flat plate boundary layer, and an adaptive grid scheme redistributing grid points within the computation domain is proposed with a great emphasis on the construction of the grid control function. The function is sensitized to the second invariant of the mean strain tensor, its spatial gradient, and the interaction of pressure gradient and flow deformation. The transition process is assumed to be described with a κ-ε turbulence model. An elliptic solver is employed to integrate governing equations. Numerical results show that the proposed adaptive grid scheme is very effective in obtaining grid independent numerical solution with a very low grid number. It is expected that present scheme is helpful in predicting actual flow within a turbine to improve computation efficiency.

The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence models by Launder et al.(1977, LPS) and Leschziner and Rodi(1981, LR) are modified to account for the secondary straining effect with having a generality in the present paper. The modified models are obtained by replacing the gradient Richardson number used to account for the secondary straining effect in the original models by a new parameter with a tensor-invariant correction form. These two modified models are used to predict the turbulent flow over a backward-facing step. In contrast to both standard and modified LR models, the modified LPS model is found to predict the reattachment point fairy well, as well as mean velocity, wall static pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in the recirculating region.

Prediction of 3-D permeability tensor for multi-axial preform is critical to model and design the manufacturing process of composites by considering resin flow through the multi-axial fiber structure. In this study, the in-plane and transverse permeabilities for braided preform are predicted numerically. The flow analyses are calculated by using 3-D CVFEM(control volume finite element method) for macro-unit cells. To avoid checker-board pressure field and improve the efficiency of numerical computation, a new interpolation function for velocity is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. Permeability of a braided preform is measured through unidirectional flow experiment and compared with the permeability calculated numerically. Unlike other studies, the current study is based on more realistic unit cell and prediction of permeability is improved.
Fine grid calculations are reported for the developing turbulent flow in a straight duct and a curved duct of square cross-section with a radius of curvature to hydraulic diameter ratio ${\delta}=R_c/H_H=3.357$ and a bend angle of 180 deg. A sequence of modeling refinements is introduced; the replacement of wall function by a fine mesh across the sublayer and a low Reynolds number second moment closure up to the near wall sublayer in which the non-linear return to isotropy model and the cubic-quasi-isotropy model for the pressure strain are adopted; and the introduction of a multiple source model for the exact dissipation rate equation. Each refinement is shown to lead to an appreciable improvement in the agreement between measurement and computation.
In liquid composite molding (LCM), composites are produced by impregnation of a dry preform with liquid resin. The resin flow through the preform is usually described by Darcy's law and the permeability tensor must be obtained for filling analysis. While the resin flow in the thickness direction can be neglected for thin parts, the resin flow in the transverse direction is important for thicker parts. However, the transverse permeability of the preform has not been investigated frequently. In this study, the transverse permeability was measured experimentally for five different fiber preforms. In order to verify the experimental results, the measured transverse permeability was compared with numerical results. Five different fiber mats were used in this study: glass fiber woven fabric, aramid fiber woven fabric, glass fiber random mat, glass fiber braided preform, and glass/aramid hybrid braided preform. The anisotropic braided preforms were manufactured by using a three dimensional braiding machine. The pressure was measured at the inlet and outlet positions with pressure transducers.
Sintered P/M connecting rod is forged to increase density and to satisfy dimensional specifications. Flow of the materials is different form that of wrought materials due to pores in the preform. The Mises yield function was modified to. include the first invariant of stress tensor, and the associated flow rule was derived by applying the normality rule to the yield function. Axisymmetric and plane-strain finite element analyes were carried out for the ring and beam portions of the connecting rod, respectively. The flow of the preform and density change of the analysis are presented in this paper. A load-stroke curve was also presented by superimposing analysis results for the ring and beam portions.
An Aquifer test was carried out on five boreholes to determine the hydrologic anisotropy and the major groundwater flow direction in the aquifer system of the study area. With an assumption of the aquifer's anisotropy and homogeneity, the major transmissivity(T(equation omitted)), the minor transmissivity( $T_{ηη}$ ), and primary tensor direction ($\theta$) for each borehole were determined from the test. Besides the boreholes BH-1, BH-4 and BH-5, the anisotropy transmissivity tensor values of BH-2 and BH-3 did not correspond with the assumption. Thereafter the values were plotted on the polar coordinate, and showed that the tensor values were out of the anisotropy ellipsoid due to the high heterogeneity of BH-2 and BH-3 comparing with the other boreholes. Therefore. the anisotropy of the aquifer was examined from BH-1, BH-4. and BH-5. In BH-1, T(equation omitted) is 171.9 $\m^2$/day. $T_{ηη}$ is $71.01\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is Nl5.39$^{\circ}$E. In BH-4. T(equation omitted) is $268.2 \m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ / is $28.75\m^2$/day and the principal tensor direction is N7.55$^{\circ}$E. In BH-5, T(equation omitted) is $168.4\m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ is 66.80 $\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is $N76.59^{\circ}$E. On the basis of teleview logging performed on each borehole. the principal fracture directions were revealed as $N0^{\circ}$~4$^{\circ}$E/$30^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$SE and $N30^{\circ}$~$80^{\circ}$W/$20^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$NE that are the most frequently occurred sets as well as that correspond well with the calculated transmissivity tensor.
