In spite of progress in predicting ductile failure, the development of a macroscopic yield criterion to describe damage evolution in HCP (hexagonal close-packed) materials remains a challenge. HCP materials display strength differential effects (i.e., different behavior in tension versus compression) in their plastic response due to twinning. Cazacu and Stewart(2009) developed an analytical yield criterion for porous material containing randomly distributed spherical voids in an isotropic, incompressible matrix that shows tension-compression asymmetry. The goal of the calculations in this paper is to investigate the effect of the tension-compression asymmetry on necking induced by void nucleation, evolution and consolidation. In order to investigate the effect of the tension-compression asymmetry of the matrix on necking and fracture initiation, three isotropic materials A, B, and C were examined with different ratios of tension-compression asymmetry. The various types of material had BCC, FCC, and HCP crystal structures, respectively. The ratio between tension and compression in plastic flow significantly influences the fracture shape produced by damage propagation as well as affecting the localized neck.
In order to take into account the strong anisotropy and the tension-compression asymmetry of AZ31 sheet alloy, the Cazacu-Plunkett-Barlat yield criterion(Cazacu, 2006), CPB06, was adopted in the present material modeling. The variation of anisotropic coefficients which describe the yield surface evolution of AZ31 is optimized using an interpolation function based on specific calibration results. It generates continuous yield surfaces, which makes it possible to describe the different hardening rates in tension and compression as well as tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. The ability of the CPB06 yield criterion to predict experimental results was demonstrated and compared with that of the Hill(1948) yield criterion.
The cyclic hardening behavior of transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels shows tension-compression asymmetry known to be attributed to transformation of retained austenite into martensite during deformation. In this work, YoshidaUemori hardening model was used to represent the asymmetric hardening behavior of TRIP1180 steel. Yoshida-Uemori hardening model parameters were obtained from three sets of data: tension-compression, compression-tension, and a combination of the two. Material models were validated for U-bending and springback.

Off-axis compressive deformation behavior of a unidirectional CFRP laminate at high temperature and its strain-rate dependence in a quasi-static range are examined for various fiber orientations. By comparing the off-axis compressive and tensile behaviors at an equal strain rate, the effect of different loading modes on the flow stress level, rate-dependence and nonlinearity of the off-axis inelastic deformation is elucidated. The experimental results indicate that the compressive flow stress levels for relatively larger off-axis angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ are about 50 percent larger than in tension for the same fiber orientations, respectively. The nonlinear deformations under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions exhibit significant strain-rate dependence. Similar features are observed in the fiber-orientation dependence of the off-axis flow stress levels under tension and compression and in the off-axis flow stress differential in tension and compression, regardless of the strain rate. A phenomenological theory of viscoplasticity is then developed which can describe the tension-compression asymmetry as well as the rate dependence, nonlinearity and fiber orientation dependence of the off-axis tensile and compressive behaviors of unidirectional composites in a unified manner. It is demonstrated by comparing with experimental results that the proposed viscoplastic constitutive model can be applied with reasonable accuracy to predict the different, nonlinear and rate-dependent behaviors of the unidirectional composite under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions.

With the increasing demand for lightweight materials to reduce fuel consumption, especially in the transportation industry, magnesium alloys are being widely studied. However, there are several limitations to the large-scale application of magnesium alloys in a structure because of their low formability and strong anisotropy. In order to take into account both the strong anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry of AZ31 sheet alloy, the Cazacu-Plunkett-Barlat yield criterion (Cazacu, 2006) was adopted in material modeling. The variation of the anisotropic coefficients that describe the yield surface evolution of AZ31 is optimized using an interpolation function based on specific calibration results. It generates continuous yield surfaces, which makes it possible to describe different hardening rates in tension and compression as well as the tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. The performance of the CPB06 yield criterion for simulating an axial crushing test was tested and compared with that of the Hill (1948) yield criterion.

Mg-(9-x)Sn-xAl-1Zn (x=1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.%) alloys were subjected to indirect extrusion, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-extruded Mg-Sn-Al-Zn (TAZ) alloys were investigated. The TAZ 811 alloy exhibited a finer grain structure than the TAZ 541 alloy due to a larger number of Mg2Sn particles, which pinned the grain boundaries and prevented growth of recrystallized grains. The TAZ alloys showed an unusual yield asymmetry behavior. The tension-compression yield asymmetry increased with decreasing average grain size. The TAZ 811 alloy with a small grain size exhibited a larger yield asymmetry than that of the TAZ 541 alloy having a relatively large grain size, which is mainly attributed to the low Al content and large number of second phase particles in the TAZ 811 alloy.
Magnesium alloy sheets in room temperature have unusual mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening behavior. In this paper, the continuum plasticity models considering the plastic behavior of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet were derived. A new hardening law based on modified two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metals including Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. To include the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified by adding anisotropic constants.

Magnesium alloy sheets have unique mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening response. The unusual mechanical behavior of magnesium alloys has been understood by the limited symmetry crystal structure of HCP metals or by deformation twinning. In the present study, the continuum plasticity models considering the unusual plastic behavior of magnesium alloy sheet were derived for a finite element analysis. A new hardening law based on two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metal sheets such as Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. In terms of the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified to include the anisotropy of magnesium alloys.
Unique constitutive behavior of magnesium alloys as one of hexagonal close packed(hcp) metals has been implemented into the commercial finite element program ABAQUS. The constitutive equations can represent asymmetry in tension-compression yield stresses and flow curves. For the verification purpose, the springback of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was measured using the unconstrained cylindrical bending test proposed in Numisheet'2002 benchmark committee. Besides the developed constitutive models, the isotropic models based on tensile and compressive properties were also considered for comparison purpose. The predicted results by the finite element analysis and corresponding experiments showed enhanced prediction capability in springback analysis.

In this paper, elasto-plastic constitutive equations for highly anisotropic and asymmetric materials are developed and their numerical implementation is presented. Some engineering materials such as fiber reinforced composites show different material behavior in the different material directions (anisotropy) as well as in tension and compression (asymmetry). Although these materials have mostly been analyzed using the anisotropic elastic constitutive equations, the necessity of consideration of plastic properties has been frequently reported in the previous works. In order to include both the anisotropic and asymmetric properties of composite materials, the Drucker-Prager yield criterion is modified by adding anisotropic parameters and initial components of translation. The implementation procedure for the developed theory and algorithms is presented based on the implicit finite element scheme. The measured data from the previous work are used to validate the present constitutive equations.
