The loss of cable tension for civil infrastructure reduces structural bearing capacity and causes harmful deformation of structures. Currently, most of the structural health monitoring (SHM) approaches for cables rely on contact transducers. This paper proposes a cable tension identification technology using percussion sound, which provides a fast determination of steel cable tension without physical contact between cables and sensors. Notably, inspired by the concept of tensioning strings for piano tuning, this proposed technology predicts cable tension value by deep learning assisted classification of "percussion" sound from tapping a steel cable. To simulate the non-linear mapping of human ears to sound and to better quantify the minor changes in the high-frequency bands of the sound spectrum generated by percussions, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) were extracted as acoustic features to train the deep learning network. A convolutional neural network (CNN) with four convolutional layers and two global pooling layers was employed to identify the cable tension in a certain designed range. Moreover, theoretical and finite element methods (FEM) were conducted to prove the feasibility of the proposed technology. Finally, the identification performance of the proposed technology was experimentally investigated. Overall, results show that the proposed percussion-based technology has great potentials for estimating cable tension for in-situ structural safety assessment.
In an attempt to understand the possible effects of temperature and X-irradiation on the activities of surfactant in rabbits, the pulmonary surfactant from the rabbit was subjected to the incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ and X-irradiation with 900r in vitro, and activities of surfactant were measured at 10, 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Tension-area diagram of the lung extract was recorded automatically by the modified Langmuir-wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system designed in this Department. A comparison was made with the normal and the following results were obtained. 1) The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension, width of the tension area diagram at the surface area of 40% and stability index of the normal rabbit lung extract were $31.6{\pm}3.11\;dynes/cm,\;8.2{\pm}0.56\;dynes/cm,\;21.4{\pm}4.40\;dynes/cm\;and\;1.12{\pm}0.22$,respectively. 2) In the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group, maximal surface tension was similar to the normal value, while minimal surface tension was significantly lower and stability infer was markedly higher than the normal. 3) In the group where X-irradiation of 900r in vitro was applied, maximal surface tension did not differ greatly with the normal or the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group. The minimal surface tension was significantly lower than the normal but comparing with the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group, some decrease in minimal surface tension was noted. The width of the tension·area diagram at 40% and stability index in the irradiated group were significantly higher than the normal but a tendency of increase was noted comparing with the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group.
The dynamic surface tension of GL12 (easily biodegradable nonionic surfactant and mild to skin), LAS and SLES aqueous solutions and that of mixed surfactant systems were measured by the maximum bubble pressure method at different mixing ratios. The effects of various salt such as NaCl, CsCl and urea on the dynamic surface tension of mixed surfactant systems were also studied. The dynamic surface tension of GL12 was not influenced by the presence of salts. On the contrary, the dynamic surface tensions of anionic surfactants (LAS and SLES) were significantly affected by the salts. In the mixed surfactant systems, the effect of salt increased as the composition of anionic LAS or SLES increased in the GL12/LAS and GL12/SLES mixtures.
Objective: Various psychological factors influence the occurrence of tension-type headaches. The aim of this study is to compare the level of alexithymia between tension-type headache patients and normal controls. Methods: Sixty-six subjects with tension-type headaches and 59 controls were studied. The Beck Depression Inventory and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20K) were administered to the tension-type headache group and TAS-20K to the normal control group. Results: Compared with normal controls, the tension-type headache group had significantly higher alexithymia scores. There was also significant association between the level of alexithymia and the severity of the depression in tension-type headache patients. Conclusions: These findings suggest that patients with tension-type headaches have difficulty in expressing their emotions. And in patients with tension-type headaches, the more alexithymic they are, the more depressive.

We have developed the novel device that can extract energy from ocean waves utilizing the heaving motion of a floating mass. The major components of the energy converter are: a floater, a counterweight, a cable, a driving pulley, two idler pulleys, a ratchet, and a generator. The device generates power through the tension force in the cable and the weight difference between the floater and the counterweight. When the system is at static free condition, the tension in the cable is equal to the weight of the counterweight which is minimum. Therefore it is desirable to keep the counterweight lighter than the floater. However, experiments show that during the rise of the water level, the torque generated by weight of the counterweight is insufficient to rotate the driving pulley which causes the cable on the floater side to slack. The proposed application of the tension pulley rectifies these problems by preventing the cable from becoming slack when the water level rises. In this paper, the dynamics model is modified to incorporate the dynamics of the tension pulley. This has been achieved by first writing the dynamical equations for the tension pulley and the energy converter separately and combining them later. This paper investigates numerically the effect of the tension pulley on various physical quantities such as the cable tension, the floater displacement, and the floater velocity. Results obtained indicate that this application is successful in suppressing large fluctuations of the cable tension.
Post-tensioning (PT) tendons are commonly used for the assembly of modularized concrete members, and tension is applied to the tendons during construction to facilitate the integrated behavior of the members. However, the tension in a PT tendon decreases over time due to steel corrosion and concrete creep, and consequently, the stress on the anchor head that secures the PT tendon also diminishes. This study proposes an automatic detection system to identify tension reduction in a PT tendon using pulsed-eddy-current (PEC) measurement. An eddy-current sensor is installed on the surface of the steel anchor head. The sensor creates a pulsed excitation to the driving coil and measures the resulting PEC response using the pick-up coil. The basic premise is that the tension reduction of a PT tendon results in stress reduction on the anchor head surface and a change in the PEC intensity measured by the pick-up coil. Thus, PEC measurement is used to detect the reduction of the anchor head stress and consequently the reduction of the PT tendon force below a certain threshold value. The advantages of the proposed PEC-based tension-reduction-detection (PTRD) system are (1) a low-cost (< $ 30), low-power (< 2 Watts) sensor, (2) a short inspection time (< 10 seconds), (3) high reliability and (4) the potential for embedded sensing. A 3.3 m long full-scale monostrand PT tendon was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PTRD system. The PT tendon was tensioned to 180 kN using a custom universal tensile machine, and the tension was decreased to 0 kN at 20 kN intervals. At each tension, the PEC responses were measured, and tension reduction was successfully detected.

Measuring the tensile strength of steel cables used to support bridges is a critical inspection item in terms of the safety of a bridge. Today, cable tension is measured with the vibration method and loadcell. Recently, some advanced countries have conducted studies on measuring tension with magnetic method and are suggesting prospective results. Since there were no such studies ongoing in Korea, we began a study on measuring tension with magnetic method as we are undergoing researches to improve the precision of measurements. It is necessary to consider the influence for the magnetic field and the temperature of steel cables in tension measurement of magnetic method. In this paper, we tested an output characteristic of tension sensor according to temperature and deduced temperature compensation coefficient in the given magnetic field and applied the compensation coefficient to the tension measurement system in the lab. We analyzed and evaluated testing results for the output voltages of the tension sensor according to cable tensions.

In this study, the empirical formula for evaluating cable tension based on long-term measurement for about 3 years according to temperature change was proposed by proving the correlation between the expansion joint displacement of the upper road bridge and the cable tension of the lower railway bridge. The tension prediction results using the empirical formula for tension evaluation each cables proposed in this study were found to be in good agreement with the cable tension using the vibration method within 3%. Therefore, it was analyzed that it could be applied together with the vibration method that was an experimental technique, to predict and evaluate the cable tension in serviced railway steel composite bridge. As a result of applying the estimated temperature calculated by the empirical formula for expansion proposed in this study to the empirical formula, it was analyzed that a high level of reliability could be secured when compared with the vibration method. Therefore, it is judged that the empirical formula for cable tension evaluation reflecting the estimated temperature proposed in this study can be used to predict the tension of cables according to climate change in the future and establish a maintenance plan.

In the weaving process, tension control of the warp is important. The variation of the warp tension cause irregularities of the weft density and low quality of the woven fabrics. Due to the fact that the warp tension varies in depending on the difference between take-up velocity and let-off velocity, it is necessary to regulate the velocity of let-off in relation to that of take-up for keeping the warp tension. Futhermore, the diameter of warp beam changes in the weaving process. The changing diameter of warp beam cause changing inertia of warp beam and the velocity of the let-off. It makes the control of such a system more complex. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy controller for the warp tension control. From the computer simulation, it was observed that a developed fuzzy controller has a better performance than that of conventional PI controller.

The overhead transmission wires operating both at warm temperature and tighten state for a long period of time in a power transmission plant are degraded by air pollution, wind, creep and slip between steel wire and aluminium conductor. The objective of this study is to investigate to investigate the characteristics of fatigue properties with tension and bending loading of a high carbon steel wire. The fatigue behaviors have been carried out by tension-tension, 4 points bending and 3 points bending loading. In the present study, a conventional fatigue strengths between 4 points bending and tension-tension fatigue were determined by Gerber, Sorderberg and Goodmans theory and we investigated S-N diagram for bending and tensile loading.
