  • The IHX (Intermediate Heat eXchanger) for a pool-type SFR (Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor) system transfers heat from the primary high temperature sodium to the intermediate cold temperature sodium. The upper structure of the IHX is a coaxial structure designed to form a flow path for both the secondary high temperature and low temperature sodium. The coaxial structure of the IHX consists of a central downcomer and riser for the incoming and outgoing intermediate sodium, respectively. The IHX of a pool-type SFR is supported at the upper surface of the reactor head with an IHX support structure that connects the IHX riser cylinder to the reactor head. The reactor head is generally maintained at the low temperature regime, but the riser cylinder is exposed in the elevated temperature region. The resultant complicated temperature distribution of the co-axial structure including the IHX support structure may induce a severe thermal stress distribution. In this study, the structural feasibility of the current upper support structure concept is investigated through a preliminary stress analysis and an alternative design concept to accommodate the IHTS (Intermediate Heat Transport System) piping expansion loads and severe thermal stress is proposed. Through the structural analysis it is found that the alternative design concept is effective in reducing the thermal stress and acquiring structural integrity.

  • Currently, the interim storage pools of spent fuels in South Korea are expected to become saturated from 2024. It is required to prepare an operation plan of a domestic dry storage facility during a long-term period, with the researches on safety evaluation methods. This study modified the FRAPCON code to predict the spent fuel integrity evaluation such as the axial cladding temperature, the hoop stress and hydrogen distribution in dry storage. The cladding temperature in dry storage was calculated using the COBRA-SFS code with the burnup information which was calculated using the FRAPCON code. The hoop stress was calculated using the ideal gas equation with spent fuel information such as rod internal pressure. Numerical analysis method was used to calculate the degree of hydrogen diffusion according to the hydrogen concentration and temperature distribution during a dry storage period. Before 50 years of dry storage, the cladding temperature and hoop stress decreased rapidly. However, after 50 years, they decreased gradually and the cladding temperature was below 400 K. The initial temperature distribution and hydrogen concentration showed a parabolic line, but hydrogen was transferred by the hydrogen concentration and temperature gradient over time.

  • High-temperature rupture behavior of 5083-Al alloy was tested for failure at 548K under multiaxial stress conditions: uniaxial tension using smooth bar specimens, biaxial shearing using double shear bar specimens, and triaxial tension using notched bar specimens. Rupture times were compared for uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stress conditions with respect to the maximum principal stress, the von Mises effective stress, and the principal facet stress. The results indicate that the von Mises effective and principal facet stresses give good correlation for the material investigated, and these parameters can predict creep life data under the multiaxial stress states with the rupture data obtained from specimens under the uniaxial stress. The results suggest that the creep rupture of this alloy under the testing condition is controlled by cavitation coupled with highly localized deformation process, such as grain boundary sliding. It is also conceivable that strain softening controls the highly localized deformation modes which result in cavitation damage in controlling rupture time of this alloy.

  • In this paper, a theoretical study has been made to reduce the residual stress and birefringence in the injection-molded parts. An optimization program has been used to minimize the residual stresses and birefringence calculated from a simulation program. The thermally induced stress has been calculated using a linear viscoelasticity model. The flow stress and birefringence has been calculated using the Leonov's viscoelasticity model. This has been applied to the injection molding of a circular disc and a plate. the optimization has been done either by changing process variables while maintaining the mold temperature constant or by varying the mold-wall temperature with time. This study shows the significant reduction in residual stress and birefringence is possible through the optimization of processing conditions.

  • In this study, the coupled effects of magnetic field, stress and thermal field on gravity waves propagating in a liquid layer over a solid surface are discussed. Due to change in temperature, initial hydrostatic stress and magnetic field, the gravity-sound Rayleigh waves can propagate in the liquid-solid interface. Dispersion properties of waves are derived by using classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity. The phase velocity of gravity waves influenced quite remarkably in the presence of initial stress parameter, magneto-thermoelastic coupling parameter in the half space. Numerical solutions are also discussed for gravity-Rayleigh waves. In the absence of temperature, stress and magnetic field, the obtained results are in agreement with classical results.

  • Recently, the continuous welded rail(CWR) track has been used for less maintenance of the High-speed railway tracks. In case of CWR track, track buckling has always been an unpredictable event under the high compressive stress in rail. The behavior and stress state of CWR track is manily influenced by its thermal variations, and it is important to understand seasonal variations of rail temperature and stress to predict the track stability. This paper describes the in-site measurement for the rail temperature and rail stress, and the correlation between the rail temperature and stress was examined.

  • As silica based optical fibers and preforms are processed at a high temperature, residual stresses are bulit in the strucure when cooled down to the room temperature. The magnitude of the residual stress depends on the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between core and cladding glass as well as on the temperature difference. Residual stress distribution determines the intrinsic strength and could affect the long term reliability of optical fibers. And furthermore, stress can introduces anisotropy into optical fibers by photoelastic effects. The analysis of thermal stress has been intensively studied for multimode fibers$^{(1)}$ and the authors and co-wokers recently reported the stress distribution in a depressed inner cladding structure$^{(2)}$ . The compositions of the glass in the previous studies, however, have been restricted to conventional glass formers, such as GeO2, B2O3, P2O5, Fluorine. (omitted)

  • In this paper, an effect of drive-in process temperature on the residual stress profile of the p+ silicon film has been investigated. The residual stress profile has been calculated as the fourth-order polynomials. All coefficients of the polynomials have been determined from the measurement of the vertical deflections of the p+ silicon cantilevers with various thickness and the tip displacement of the p+ silicon rotating beam. From the determination results of the residual stress profile, the average stress of the film thermally oxidized at 1000 $^{\circ}C$ is 15 MPa and that of the film oxidized at 1100 $^{\circ}C$ is 25 MPa. The profile of the residual stress through the high temperature drive-in process has a steeper gradient than the other case.

  • In this study, atomistic simulations are performed to study the effect of Al solute on the behaviour of edge dislocation in Mg alloys. After the dissociation of an Mg basal edge dislocation into two Shockley partials using molecular mechanics, the interaction between the dislocation and Al solute at different temperatures is studied using molecular dynamics. It appears from the simulations that the critical shear stress increases with the Al solute concentration. Comparing with the solute effect at T = 0 K, however, the critical shear stress at a finite temperature is lower since the kinetic energy of the atoms can help the dislocation conquer the energy barriers created by the Al atoms. The velocity of the edge dislocation decreases as the Al concentration increases when the external shear stress is relatively small regardless of temperature. The Al concentration effect on the dislocation velocity is not significant at very high shear stress level when the solute concentration is below 4.0 at%. Drag coefficient B increases with the Al concentration when the stress to temperature ratio is below 0.3 MPa/K, although the effect is more significant at low temperatures.
