History and Trends of Data Education in Korea - KISTI Data Education Based on 2001-2019 Statistics

  • Big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning are keywords that represent the Fourth industrial Revolution. In addition, as the development of science and technology, the Korean government, public institutions and industries want professionals who can collect, analyze, utilize and predict data. This means that data analysis and utilization education become more important. Education on data analysis and utilization is increasing with trends in other academy. However, it is true that not many academy run long-term and systematic education. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is a data ecosystem hub and one of its performance missions has been providing data utilization and analysis education to meet the needs of industries, institutions and governments since 1966. In this study, KISTI's data education was analyzed using the number of curriculum trainees per year from 2001 to 2019. With this data, the change of interest in education in information and data field was analyzed by reflecting social and historical situations. And we identified the characteristics of KISTI and trainees. It means that the identity, characteristics, infrastructure, and resources of the institution have a greater impact on the trainees' interest of data-use education.In particular, KISTI, as a research institute, conducts research in various fields, including bio, weather, traffic, disaster and so on. And it has various research data in science and technology field. The purpose of this study can provide direction forthe establishment of new curriculum using data that can represent KISTI's strengths and identity. One of the conclusions of this paper would be KISTI's greatest advantages if it could be used in education to analyze and visualize many research data. Finally, through this study, it can expect that KISTI will be able to present a new direction for designing data curricula with quality education that can fulfill its role and responsibilities and highlight its strengths.

포스텍 캠퍼스의 전력 사용 데이터 수집 및 분석 (Collection and Analysis of Electricity Consumption Data in POSTECH Campus)

  • Purpose: This paper introduces Pohang University of Science Technology (POSTECH) advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and Open Innovation Big Data Center (OIBC) platform and analysis results of electricity consumption data collected via the AMI in POSTECH campus. Methods: We installed 248 sensors in seven buildings at POSTECH for the AMI and collected electricity consumption data from the buildings. To identify the amounts and trends of electricity consumption of the seven buildings, electricity consumption data collected from March to June 2019 were analyzed. In addition, this study compared the differences between the amounts and trends of electricity consumption of the seven buildings before and after the COVID-19 outbreak by using electricity consumption data collected from March to June 2019 and 2020. Results: Users can monitor, visualize, and download electricity consumption data collected via the AMI on the OIBC platform. The analysis results show that the seven buildings consume different amounts of electricity and have different consumption trends. In addition, the amounts of most buildings were significantly reduced after the COVID-19 outbreak. Conclusion: POSTECH AMI and OIBC platform can be a good reference for other universities that prepare their own microgrid. The analysis results provides a proof that POSTECH needs to establish customized strategies on reducing electricity for each building. Such results would be useful for energy-efficient operation and preparation of unusual energy consumptions due to unexpected situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • This fault diagnosis system consists of qualitative models, qualitative interpreter, and inference engine. Qualitative models are formed by analysis of the relationships between faults and behaviors of sensor trends, which are described by state transition trees. Qualitative interpreter outputs confidence factors with three qualitative quantities which represent the states of sensor trends. And then, the possible faults are detected by inference module which matches the states of trends within a window size with the qualitative models using the well-known min-max operation.

특허분석을 통한 천연염색기술의 현황 (Technology Trends Related with the Natural Dyeing by Patent Analysis)

  • The trends of patents related to natural dyeing were examined in order to guide the development of natural dyeing into a high value-added technology. Total 181 patents data provided from KISTI were analyzed and following results were drawn. Korea had the overwhelming number of patents related to natural dyeing over Japan or United States of America from 1970 to 2007. In case of domestic, the number of patent applications were heavily focused on the metropolitan area in 1990's, but started to increase in the Honam region and Youngnam region in the first half of the year 2000 which indicated that the researches and the developments of natural dyeing were very active. In the case of foreign countries, most of their patent applications comes from the corporation such as a company while the number of patents applications from individuals overwhelms that of corporation in South Korea. Also, more of individuals' patent applications were denied than corporations' patents applications. The vegetable dye, a type of dyestuff which is a research subject for patent application, had the most research done above all other dyestuff.

  • Security threats in supply-chains can be targeted at all the users who use products related to these supply-chains as well as at single equipment or individuals. This implies that these security threats can cause nationwide economic and social damages. In particular, it is true that hardware security threat analysis technology in supply-chains has significant technical barriers due to the lack of software knowledge as well as the need to study and understand undisclosed hardware designs. In this paper, we discuss the future direction of studies by introducing basic concepts and attack cases, along with domestic and foreign technology trends related to supply-chain security technology.

비침습 연속혈당 모니터링 기술동향 (Trends in Non-invasive Continuous Glucose Monitoring Technology)

  • A technology to replace the traditional blood sampling method for glucose monitoring has been sought for a long time. It is now possible to measure the blood glucose change rate continuously for more than 24 hours using a minimally invasive method that does not involve blood collection. Furthermore, various technology development efforts are being made for innovative diabetes management through intermittent or continuous blood glucose monitoring in a non-invasive manner. In this paper, we present an overview of diabetes and the need for continuous blood glucose measurement techniques., and then introduce various non-invasive blood glucose measurement techniques currently being studied. In addition, through research and analysis of the recent commercialization development status of minimally invasive, non-invasive, and wearable continuous blood glucose measurement technologies, we examine global development trends of future technologies.

  • Market-oriented networks support various tasks in the market domain. We analyze trends in structural changes of such networks to adapt to preferences in general market movements. This analysis is different from conventional ones that focus on specific technologies. Instead, we focus on the paradigm shift of network technology from connectivity functionalities to platforms supporting business domains for direct modeling. Moreover, we analyze current development efforts of technologies based on popular and realistic solutions such as FIWARE, 5GinFIRE, IBN, IDN, and HNSP. Remarkably, we detail HNSP as an open research and development platform to experiment with business models and enable co-building with developers. We observe a clear paradigm shift of communications technology from a closed to an open job-shop style.

특허의 토픽 모델링을 활용한 증강현실 기술 모니터링 (Monitoring Augmented Reality Technology Using Topic Modeling of Patents)

  • Augmented reality (AR), which is a live direct or indirect view of a real-world environment combined with virtual objects, has grown rapidly owing to its wide application potential. Despite the growth of AR technology and its increased attraction, however, little attention has been paid to identifying sub-technologies of this technology and their evolving trends based on the data encompassing industrial competition. In the present study, therefore we collect AR-related patents granted until 2015 and then identify technology topics constituting AR technology by applying topic modeling to the patents' textual data. Subsequently, this study determines dynamic evolving trends with respect to those identified technology topics using indicators and maps based on the technology topics' patents and citations. The contributions of this study are twofold; it provides an overall understanding of AR technology's evolving trends based on text mining of AR patents and will assist technology experts in academia and industry in determining further R&D in the near future.

  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze the development trends of gene therapy. The possibility of technological development and commercialization of gene therapy has been increased along with the success of Human Genome Project. A lot of gene-therapy-based R&D and clinical trials have been advanced. The US and EU have led the global technological development, and Korea is in early stage although many institutions and firms have participated in this area.

신기술·트렌드의 국내 교육적 활용을 위한 촉진 및 방해 요인 분석 (An content analysis of facilitating and conflicting factors on the Korea's educational uses of emerging technologies and trends)

  • 본 연구는 미래교육의 변화를 주도할 것으로 예측된 신기술 및 트렌드가 국내 교육현장에 활용될 수 있는 촉진 요인과 방해요인은 무엇인지를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 문헌 분석을 통해 도출된 20개 신기술 트렌드에 대하여, 총 24명의 연구, 정책, 학교 및 기업현장 전문가들을 대상으로 촉진요인과 방해요인에 대한 개방형 온라인 설문 조사를 통해 수집된 질적 자료에 대한 내용 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 콘텐츠의 효과성과 기술의 성숙도가 가장 주요한 촉진요인이자 방해요인이 될 수 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 교수학습방법에서의 혁신적이고 다양한 교수 학습 방법 및 학습동기를 촉진할 수 있는 가능성, 기술의 성숙도를 비롯한 기술의 대중화와 보편성 확대가 주요한 촉진요인으로 드러났다. 반면, 윤리적 측면에서의 부작용이나 개인정보 보호, 제도적 측면에서의 낮은 부합성이나 불충분한 검증, 교육 환경 측면에서의 네트워크 및 인프라 환경 미비 등이 주요한 신기술 및 트렌드의 저해요인으로 밝혀졌다.
