Terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopy have been developed as non-destructive testing methods for various industrial applications. However, they have not been widely adopted in real applications owing to a high system price and the large size of conventional THz time-domain spectroscopy systems, which are based on ultrashort optical pulse lasers. Recently, various types of compact THz emitters and detectors have become available. As a result, THz non-destructive test (NDT) systems have become viable solutions. Herein, we briefly review the recent advances in THz NDT techniques adopting continuous-wave THz systems, including our recent results of a THz-based waterproof test system and an electrical connection inspection system for car manufacturing.

To obtain accurate and repeatable analyses using NIR technology it is important to select an NIR instrument and / or its sample presentation attachments which allow the operator to minimize sampling errors without compromising the benefits of NIR analysis -namely rapid, low cost, minimal sample preparation, minimal structural facilities, minimal hazards. For each sample type and consistency there may be different optimal combinations of instrument, sample presentation attachment, and sample preparation. This paper will consider options available to NIR users in the area of plant and soil analysis and evaluate the potential benefits and disadvantages of crop nutrient diagnoses using laboratory based and airborne imaging techniques.

Newly developed Atom Probe Tomography (APT) technique can provide the highest available spatial resolution, 3D tomography imaging and quantitative chemical analysis in a sub-nm scale. As a complementary technique to APT, Nano-secondary ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) also provides the boron distribution in micro-scale. Therefore, the exact behavior of boron at either grain boundary or grain interior in steels can be investigated by the combination of APT and SIMS techniques from the sub-nanometer scale to the micrometer scale. The results obtained by both APT and SIMS revealed that the boron atoms were mainly segregated to the grain boundaries rather than to the grain interior in the steels containing 50ppm and 100ppm boron. It also found that carbon atoms were segregated at the boron enriched regions, which were thought to be retained austenite phase due to the chemical composition of carbon atoms.
In last several years, a number of volume localization techniques, such as ISIS, VSE, SPARS and STEAM etc., have been developed for the MR spectroscopy. These localizing techniques, however, require application of several RF pulses for the 3-D volume selection and suffer from T1 and T2 decays due to relatively long RF excitation time. In this paper, we propose a single-shot RF pulse localization technique to achieve the localized 3-D volume selection. This technique combines the cylindrical volume selection technique with a radial gradient coil with single-shot RF pulse and the oscillating selection gradient technique, so thai it minimizes the volume selection time. We report some experimental results obtained with the proposed method which appears promising for 3-D volume imaging and localized spectroscopy.
Since the launch of the Herschel Space Observatory, our understanding about the photo-dissociation regions (PDR) has taken a step forward. In the bandwidth of the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) on board Herschel, ten CO rotational transitions, including J = 4 - 3 to J = 13 - 12, and three fine structure lines, including [$C{\small{I}}$] 609, [$C{\small{I}}$] 370, and [$N{\small{II}}$] $205{\mu}m$, are covered. I present our findings from the FTS observations at the nuclear region of M83, based on the spatially resolved physical parameters derived from the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) map and the comparisons with the dust properties and star-formation tracers. This article discusses (1) the potential of using [$N{\small{II}$] 205 and [$C{\small{I}}$] $370{\mu}m$ as star-formation tracers; (2) the excitation mechanisms of warm CO in the nuclear region of M83.
In pre-surgical evaluation of pediatric epilepsy, the combined use of multiple imaging modalities for precise localization of the epileptogenic focus is a worthwhile endeavor. Advanced neuroimaging by high field Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor images, and MR spectroscopy have the potential to identify subtle lesions. $^{18}F$-FDG positron emission tomography and single photon emission tomography provide visualization of metabolic alterations of the brain in the ictal and interictal states. These techniques may have localizing value for patients which exhibit normal MRI scans. Functional MRI is helpful for non-invasively identifying areas of eloquent cortex. These advances are improving our ability to noninvasively detect epileptogenic foci which have gone undetected in the past and whose accurate localization is crucial for a favorable outcome following surgical resection.
Defects exist underneath the fruit skin are not easily discernable by using conventional color imaging technique in the visible wavelength ranges. Development of sensitive detection methods for the defects is necessary to ensure accurate quality sorting of fruits. Hyperspectral imaging techniques, which combine the features of image and spectroscopy to acquire spatial and spectral information simultaneously, have demonstrated good potentials for identifying and detecting anomalies on biological substances. In this study, a high spatial resolution hyperspectral reflectance technique was presented as a tool for detecting bruises on apple. The two-band ratio (494 nm / 952 nm) and simple threshold methods were applied to investigate the feasibility of discriminating the bruises from sound tissue of apple. The pixel wise accuracy of the discrimination was 74%. The resultant images processed with selected wavebands and morphologic algorithm distinctively showed the early stages of bruises on apple which were not discernable by naked eyes as well as a conventional color camera. Results demonstrated good potential of the hyperspectral reflectance imaging for detection of bruises on apple.
Luminescent CdSe/ZnS QDs, with emission in the red region of the spectrum, were synthesized and encapsulated in poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(D,L-lactide) diblock copolymer micelles, to prepare water-soluble, bio-compatible QD micelles. PEG-PLA diblock copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide, in the presence of methoxy PEG as a macro initiator. QDs were encapsulated with PEG-PLA polymers using a solid dispersion method in chloroform. The resultant polymer micelles, with encapsulated QDs, were characterized using various analytical techniques, such as UV- Vis measurement, light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic forced microscopy (AFM). The polymer micelles, with encapsulated QDs, were spherical and showed diameters in the range of 20-150 nm. The encapsulated QDs were highly luminescent, and have high potential for applications in biomedical imaging and detection.

A number of fluorescence imaging techniques for use in the surgical removal of glioma have been developed over the course of the long history of neurosurgery. Various biomarkers, biochemical agents, and detection systems for glioma have also been developed. This review focuses on 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), which is used to detect glioma. Numerous forms of fluorescence-guided surgery use 5-ALA, which is helpful to the surgeon. The surgical microscope system is the observational method generally used with 5-ALA, while the loupe, endoscope, and exoscope are simpler alternatives. A system is needed for minimal resection and other issues that arise during neurosurgery. Such an enhanced system should be able to detect low-grade tumors and provide information on microinvasive diseases, resulting in an improved survival rate and better surgical skills. Development of systems that fulfill certain needs would help protect the brain function of the patient and broaden the use of such systems in neurosurgery.

We conducted an unbiased near- to mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a part of the AKARI Mission Program "Large-area Survey of the LMC" (LSLMC, PI: T. Onaka). An area of about 10 square degrees of the LMC was observed by five photometric bands (3.2, 7, 11, 15, and $24{\mu}m$) and a low-resolution slitless prism ($2-5{\mu}m$, R ~20) equipped with AKARI /IRC. We constructed and publicly released photometric and spectroscopic catalogues of point sources in the LMC based on the survey data. The catalogues provide a large number of near-infrared spectral data, coupled with complementary broadband photometric data. Combined use of the present AKARI LSLMC catalogues with other infrared point source catalogues of the LMC possesses scientific potential that can be applied to various astronomical studies.
