  • Nitric oxide ($NO_x$) formation characteristics in non-premixed diffusion flames of methane fuels have been investigated experimentally and numerically by adding 10% ammonia to the fuel stream, according to the variation of the oxygen ratio in the oxidizer with oxygen/carbon dioxide and oxygen/nitrogen mixtures. In an experiment of coflow jet flames, in the case of an oxidizer with oxygen/carbon dioxide, the $NO_x$ emission increased slightly as the oxygen ratio increased. On the other hand, in case of an oxygen/nitrogen oxidizer, the $NO_x$ emission was the maximum at an oxygen ratio of 0.7, and it exhibited non-monotonic behavior according to the oxygen ratio. Consequently, the $NO_x$ emission in the condition of oxyfuel combustion was overestimated as compared to that in the condition of conventional air combustion. To elucidate the characteristics of $NO_x$ formation for various oxidizer compositions, 1D and 2D numerical simulations have been conducted by adopting one kinetic mechanism. The result of 2D simulation for an oxidizer with oxygen/nitrogen well predicted the trend of experimentally measured $NO_x$ emissions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess characterize overseas company's Cellulose acetate glasses frame sheets (overseas company's CA sheet) Also, the optimum content of plasticizer and melt extrusion condition of industrial CA resin were established for appropriate glasses frame. Methods: Overseas company's Cellulose acetate glasses frame sheets (overseas company's CA sheet) were characterized by $^1H$-NMR, GPC, and TGA. Also, the optimum content of plasticizer and melt extrusion condition of industrial CA resin were established. Results: The plasticizer of overseas company's CA sheet measured by $^1H$-NMR was diethyl phthalate, and its content was measured 30 wt% by TGA. Also, industrial CA resin showed enough melting behavior in the range of 190~200$^{\circ}C$. Compared to overseas company's CA sheet's tensile strength value of 2.2~2.8 kgf/$mm^2$, industrial CA resin exhibited sufficient tensile strength value of 2.3 kgf/$mm^2$ for glasses frame. Conclusions: Industrial CA resin with 30 wt% plasticizer content would be a promising material for glasses frame prepared by melt extrusion to replace China CA sheet.

  • Groundwater flow induced by cracks in a buried pipe causes ground loss in the vicinity of it which can lead to underground cavities and sinkhole problems. In this study, the ground collapse mechanism and the failure mode based on an aperture in the pipe located in cohesionless ground were investigated through a series of physical model studies. As the influence parameters, size of the crack, flow velocity in the pipe, groundwater level, ground cover depth and ground composition were adopted in order to examine how each of the parameters affected the behavior of the ground collapse. Influence of every experimental condition was evaluated by the final shape of ground failure (failure mode) and the amount of ground loss. According to the results, the failure mode appeared to be a 'Y' shape which featured a discontinuous change of the angle of erosion when a groundwater level was equal to the height of the ground depth. While in the case of a water table getting higher than the level of ground cover depth, the shape of the failure mode turned to be a 'V' shape that had a constant erosion angle. As the height of the ground depth increased, it was revealed that a mechanism where a vertically collapsed area which consisted of a width proportional to the ground height and a constant length occurred was repeated.

  • This paper investigates the punching shear strength of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) slabs through a series of experimental study. Five full scale slabs were constructed using normal concrete and four different types of LWAC. Each lightweight aggregate (LWA) used in this study had different sources (clay, shale, or slate) and shapes (crushed or spherical shape). Based on the test results, the effect of the lightweight aggregates (LWA) on the punching shear behavior was investigated. From the test results, it was found that the punching shear failure surface of LWAC slab with spherical shape coarse aggregate was less inclined than that with crushed shape coarse aggregate, which resulted in an increase of the area of the shear failure surface. As a result, it leads to the increased punching shear strength of the slab. On the other hand, the failure surfaces of LWAC slab with crushed shape coarse aggregate and normal coarse aggregate were inclined similarly. Finally, the test results of this study were compared with the punching shear strength obtained from current design models, such as ACI and CEB-FIP, to examine the validation of current design model to predict the punching shear strength of the LWAC slab.

  • Effects of variations sulfur/accelerator ratio on cross-linking and thermal degradation behavior of NR/CR rubber compounds were studied using both dynamic DSC and non-isothermal TGA. DSC thermograms of the given samples were obtained with several different heating rates, and after cross-liked in DSC, TGA thermograms with the same samples also obtained. Kissinger analysis was applied to assess the activation energies for the cross-linking and thermal decomposition processes. Results showed that the formation and thermal decomposition reaction of the samples occurred in the overall temperature range of $120{\sim}180^{\circ}C$ and $350{\sim}450^{\circ}C$, respectively, exhibiting that data could be well-fittable by Kissinger method. Furthermore, formation activation energy by DSC was estimated as $83.0{\pm}5.0kJ/mol$, which was much smaller than that of degradation by TGA, $147.0{\pm}2.0kJ/mol$. From these results, it was considered that, although variations of sulfur/accelerator ratio in the present experiments affected little on the formation mechanism and/or thermal degradation, they could play roles as the catalysts which lower the activation energy of formation. Because of stabilization after formation reaction, however, they have no more effects on the lowering the activation energy, showing higher values when decomposition, caused by main-chain scissions.

  • In order to investigate the formation behavior of hollow Cu via for MEMS packaging, we observed the microstructure of the Cu vias and measured the average thickness and the thickness deviation with variations of pulse-reverse pulse current density and electrodeposition time. With electrodeposition for 3 hours at the pulse and reverse pulse current densities of $-5\;mA/cm^2$ and $15\;mA/cm^2$, the average thickness and the thickness deviation of the Cu vias were $5\;{\mu}m$ and $0.63\;{\mu}m$, respectively. With increasing the electrodeposition time to 6 hours, it was possible to form the Cu vias, of which the average thickness and thickness variation of the Cu vias were $10\;{\mu}m$ and $1\;{\mu}m$, respectively. With increasing the pulse and reverse pulse current densities to $-10\;mA/cm^2$ and $30\;mA/cm^2$, Cu vias of uniform thickness could not be formed due to the faster increase of the thickness deviation than that of the average thickness with increasing the electrodeposition time.

  • Poly(acrylonitrile)(PAN) solutions in dimethylformamide(DMF) were electrospun to prepare webs consisting of 400nm ultra-fine fibers. The webs were oxidatively stabilized, activated by steam and resulted to be activated carbon fibers(ACFs). The specific surface area was $800\~1230 m^2/g$, which showed a trend of a decrease of the surface area with an increase in activation temperature, showing opposite behavior to the other ACFs. The activation energy of the stabilized fibers for the steam activation was determined as 29.2 kJ/mol to be relatively low indicating the easier activation than that of other carbonized fibers. The ACF webs were characterized by pore size and specific surface uea which would be related to the specific capacitance of the electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC). The specific capacitances measured were 27 F/g, 25 F/g, 22 F/g at the respective activation temperature of $700^{circ}C,\;750^{\circ}C\;800^{\circ}C$, showing similar trend with the specific surface area i.e., the higher activation temperature was, the lower specific capacitance resulted.

  • An understanding of the failure mechanisms of the adhesive layer is decisive in interpreting the performance of a particular adhesive joint because the delamination is one of the most common failure modes of the laminated composites such as the fiber metal laminates. The interface between different materials, which is the case between the metal and the composite layers in this study, can be loaded through a combination of fracture modes. All loads can be decomposed into peel stresses, perpendicular to the interface, and two in-plane shear stresses, leading to three basic fracture mode I, II and III. To determine the load causing the delamination growth, the energy release rate should be identified in corresponding criterion involving the critical energy release rate ($G_C$) of the material. The critical energy release rate based on these three modes will be $G_{IC}$, $G_{IIC}$ and $G_{IIIC}$. In this study, to evaluate the fracture behaviors in the fracture mode I and II of the adhesive layer in fiber metal laminates, the double cantilever beam and the end-notched flexure tests were performed using the reference adhesive joints. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the experimental results of the adhesive fracture toughness can be applied by the comparison with the finite element analysis using cohesive zone model.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the degree nutrient intake, health status and other characteristics of females aged 65 years and over in a longevity area according to family arrangement. For analysis, 585 female elderly were recruited from the Kugoksoondam area (Kurye, Goksung, Soonchang and Damyang counties), known as the longevity-belt region in Jeonla province, Korea. The subjects were categorized into three groups according to family arrangement (living alone, living with spouse only and living with family). Demographic characteristics were collected, as well as information on physical measurements, blood tests for biochemical indicators, health status and health-related life style, dietary behavior, favorite food groups, consumption frequency of food groups, nutrient intake and mini nutrition assessment. In the group living with their spouse only, the highest education, physical activity, diverse food intake, frequency of eating meats and fish, energy and nutrients intake, and score on the mininutrient status assessment (MNA) were found to be significantly favorable factors. Taken together, these results demonstrated that the group living with their spouse only had relatively superior nutrient intake and the quality of diet. In contrast, the group living alone showed the lowest self-rated economic status, diversity of food intake, and physical activity, with the highest frequency of drinking, smoking and regular exercise for almost everyday compared with the other groups. On the other hand, those living with family demonstrated the lowest intake of supplements or functional foods, and levels of hemoglobin hematocrit MCH, but the highest HBA1c and blood sugar. Therefore, the group living with family was assumed to be at risk of anemia and diabetes. These results could be useful to plan effective strategies to increase the health-life expectancy of Korean elderly people living in rural areas, according to family arrangement.

  • This study provides numerical data on the status of music therapy practices in 54 hospice and palliative care settings in Korea. Two different questionnaires for music therapists and coordinators were sent to 54 coordinators via email, and 47 (87%) hospitals and centers replied by email or post. The survey period was October 30 through December 5, 2014. Music therapists were asked to respond to 65 questionnaire items regarding working conditions, environment, session process, and personal competence. Coordinators were asked to complete 28 questionnaire items regarding the status of music therapy in their perspective setting. Twenty-two (46.8%) hospitals and centers were running music therapy programs with 28 music therapists, and 19 (67.9%) of these music therapists majored in music therapy. There was a significant difference between music therapists (M= 3.43, SD = 0.96) and coordinators (M= 2.73, SD = 0.77) regarding conditions and environment of music therapy sessions (p < .05). The circumstances and conditions for music therapy are inad quate for optimal implementation of music therapy practice. However, the perceived benefits of music therapy by coordinators suggest that music therapists do play an important role in hospice and palliative care. This research provides the first quantitative baseline data of music therapy status in hospice and palliative care settings in Korea.
