  • Since Universal Design emerged as a new design paradigm for future, the strategies of implementing UD in educational setting has been continuously pursued. Many university programs in North America especially explored the possibility and shared their experiences in the international conferences. In asia, however, no attempt was tried. This presentation will share the navigation teaching modules used in a undergraduate course “Interior Environment and Human Behavior” class, its methodology of experience and data analysis, and finally educational outcome. Since UD is a basic human oriented design, the modules surely provided affluent and realistic opportunity for students to feel emotional sympathy to understand a diverse range of users and to facilitate creative design solution for them.

  • This paper is aimed at the investigation of the teacher's perspectives on students' language anxiety. The teachers who participated in this study include six Asian ESL teachers from four different countries: Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. The methodology employed by this case study, helped to determine teachers' perspectives on students' language anxiety. This study, which was conducted by means of in-depth interviews with six experienced language teachers, offered some alternative insights on language anxiety from a different perspective. The findings indicate that the participants' views on language anxiety management seem to be fairly consistent with their own beliefs about teaching and their own assumptions about the role of the teacher.

  • Over the last decade, the field of Southeast Asian Studies has been inundated with issues of its "territory" (or the definition of what comprises Southeast Asia), relevance and future. The methodology of approaching Southeast Asian Studies has also come under constant scrutiny providing much fodder for debate. One significant suggestion was that the field of Southeast Asian Studies should "break out of the comfort zone" (Van Schendel, Bijdragen, 2012:168(4)). This paper will explore some of the ways of approaching Southeast Asian Studies beyond that comfort zone by examining other/alternative units of studying Southeast Asia in place of the traditional (or statist) perspectives that tend to confine the field within the scope of the national/nation-state boundaries. The paper will also provide some personal observations of the author on the current state and limitations to teaching and researching Southeast Asian Studies in the region.

  • The purpose of this investigation is to: (1) to derive an improvement factor for inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning in pre-service teacher training programs, and pre-service teachers practice simulated teaching that reflect the improvement factor, (2) to analyze the difference in science intrinsic motivation according to science self-efficacy and inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning experience. To achieve these goals, we recruited five elementary and secondary teachers as experts to help us develop an improvement factor based on expert interviews. Subsequently, third-year pre-service teachers of a university of education participated in our analysis of differences in science intrinsic motivation, according to their level of science self-efficacy and experience with inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning. Our methodology involved applying the analytic hierarchy process to expert interviews to derive improvement factor for inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning, followed by a two-way ANOVA to identify significant differences in science intrinsic motivation between groups with varying levels of science self-efficacy. We also conducted post-analysis through MANOVA statements. The results of our study indicate that inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning can be improved through activities that foster digital literacy, ecological literacy, democratic citizenship, and scientific inquiry skills. Moreover, small group activities and student-centered teaching-learning approaches were found to be effective in developing core competencies and promoting science achievements. Specifically, pre-service teachers prepared a teaching-learning course plan and inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning in seventh-grade in the Earth and Space subject area. Pre-service teachers' science intrinsic motivation analyze significant differences in all levels of science self-efficacy before and after simulated teaching-learning and significant difference in the interaction effect between simulated teaching-learning and scientific self-efficacy. Particularly, group with low scientific self-efficacy, the difference in science intrinsic motivation according to simulated teaching-learning was most significant. Teachers' scientific self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation are needed to improve science achievement and affective domains of students in class. Therefore, this study contributes to suggest inquiry-based simulated teaching-learning reflecting school practices from the pre-service teacher curriculum.

  • In teaching probability and statistics classes, we should increase efforts to develop examples that enhance teaching methodology in delivering more meaningful knowledge to students. Sports is one field that provides a variety of examples and World Cup Soccer events are a treasure house of many interesting problems. Teaching, using examples from this field, is an effective way to enhance the interest of students in probability and statistics because World Cup Soccer is a matter of national interest. In this paper, we have suggested several examples pertaining to counting the number of cases and computing probabilities. These examples are related to many issues such as possible scenarios in the preliminary round, victory points necessary for each participant to advance to the second round, and the issue of grouping teams. Based on a simulation using a statistical model, we have proposed a logical method for computing the probabilities of proceeding to the second round and winning the championship for each participant in the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

  • This article provides how to implement the use of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) in a teaching a function at a school to improve students' mathematization for their mathematical thinking using technology, This study was planed to get research results using the mixed methodology with quantitative and qualitative methodologies. 120 middle school students participated in the study to bring us data about their mathematical achievement and disposition. Through the data analysis used ANCOVA, the students with the experiment of the mathematization and technology excelled the other groups of students who were not provided with technology or both of them. In analysis of the questions of the achievement test, the problems for vertical mathematization were presented harder for the students than the other problems for horizontal and applicative mathematization. The technology environment might have helped students manipulate the application of real-life problems easier. This means that teachers can put more careful assignment on vertical mathematization using technology. We also explored that learning and teaching under RME using technology encouraged students to refine and develop their informal functional concept and pursue higher thinking of formalization. The study results in a lot of resources for teachers to use into their teaching mathematics for improving students' mathematical thinking.

  • Current up-to-date courses of study put emphasis on raising creative students. However, the cramming methods of teaching mathematics in the school seems far from the creativity and the number of students who feels mathematics difficult is increasing. To overcome this situation, the government proposed 'the mathematics education using storytelling', which leads to lots of developments of mathematics using serious game in many areas. However most of the current serious games couldn't do away with the deductive framework of mathematics, which makes it impossible to achieve the purpose of raising creative students. This is because existing mathematics serious games have not deeply contemplated many aspects such as the purpose and theories of teaching and teaching mathematics. Therefore, in order to overcome the limitations of cramming methods in existing mathematics educations, this research proposes the new method of developing serious game contents for elementary geometry that is useful to improve mathematical intuition, based on RME, the theory of teaching/learning mathematics.
