DISTURBANCE ATTENUATION FOR A CLASS OF DISCRETE-TIME SWITCHED SYSTEMS WITH EXPONENTIAL UNCERTAINTY

  • The disturbance attenuation problem for a class of discretetime switched linear systems with exponential uncertainties via switched state feedback and switched dynamic output feedback is investigated, respectively. By using Taylor series approximation and convex polytope technique, exponentially uncertain discrete-time switched linear system is transformed into an equivalent switched polytopic model with additive norm bounded uncertainty. For such equivalent switched model, one designs its switching strategy and associated state feedback controllers and dynamic output feedback controllers so that whole switched model is asymptotical stabilization with H-in nity disturbance attenuation base on switched Lyapunov function and LMI approach. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate our results.

Statistical Properties of Intensity-Based Image Registration Methods

  • We investigated the mean and variance of the MSE and the MI-based image registration methods that have been widely applied for image registration. By using the first order Taylor series expansion, we have approximated the mean and the variance for one-dimensional image registration. The asymptotic results show that the MSE based method is unbiased and efficient for the same image registration problem while the MI-based method shows larger variance. However, for the different modality image registration problem, the MSE based method is largely biased while the MI based method still achieves registration. The results imply that the MI based method achieves robustness to the different image modalities at the cost of inefficiency. The analytical results are supported by simulation results.

  • In most physical processes, the transfer function includes a time-delay, and in the general distributed control system using a computer network, an inherent time-delay exists due to the spatial separation between controllers and actuators. Under the circumstance where an input time-delay exits, the system response overshoots and tends to diverge. For this reasons described above, a controller design method is proposed for a discrete nonlinear system including input time-delay, which adopts the time-discretization using Taylor series. Controllers are synthesized using an input/output linearization method. Finally, several cases of the computer simulations were conducted, and the results validate the proposed methods.

  • This paper presents a tracking filter with ship's motion compensation for a ship-borne radar tracking system. The ship's maneuver is described by displacement and rotational motions in the ship-centered east-north frame. The first order Taylor series approximation of the measurement error covariance of the converted measurement is derived in the ship-centered east-north frame. The ship's maneuver is compensated by incorporating the measurement error covariance of the converted measurement and displacement of the position state in the tracking filter. The simulation results via 500 Monte-Carlo runs show that the proposed method follows the target successfully and provides consistent tracking performance during ship's maneuvers while the conventional tracking filter without ship motion compensation fails to track during such periods.

  • In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of verification core hole on the shaft tip capacity. The verification core extreted at shaft tip may deteriorate the shaft tip capacity when the clay shales (Taylor Marl) surrounding the shaft degrades and the empty core hole remains unfilled. Series of finite element analyses were conducted using Mohr-Coulomb model with total stress material parameters that were obtained from laboratory testing. The numerical analyses indicate that the shaft tip capacity does not decrease for most cases, and the maximum reduction does not exceed 5%.

  • Time dependent deflections of double composite box girders are investigated based on the on going laboratory experiments scheduled for 3months long. Two of 2-span double composite box girders with 2.5m each span length are cast and time dependent behaviors are measured using 30 strain gages and 2 LVDTs after 5 days' curing. The measured experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions performed based on the one dimensional finite element method adopting beam element. The FEM formulation adopts the time dependent concrete constitutive model which is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. A good agreement between the measured and predicted results are observed and the effects of the bottom concrete placed at the negative moment region of the bridge girder are discussed.

Intersymbol interference due to sampling-time jitter and its approximations in a raised cosing filtered system

  • This paper studies the effect of intersymbol interference due to sampling-time jitter on the worst-case bit error probability in a digital modultation over an additive white Gaussian noise channel, with the squared-root raised-cosine filters in the transmitter and the receiver. It derives approximation formulas using the Taylor series approximations. the principal results of this paper is the relationship between the worst-casse bit error probability, the degree of jitter, the roll factor of the raised cosine filter, and other quantities. Numerical results show, as expected, that the intersymbol interference decreases as the roll-off factor increases and the jitter decreases. They also show that the approximation formulas are accurate for smally intersymbol interference, i.e., for large roll-noise ratio $E_{b/}$ $N_{0}$.leq.7 dB and begin to lose accuracy for larger signal-to-noise ratio.o.o.

  • The free-model concept is introduced as an alternative intelligent system technique to design a controller with input and output data only. The idea of free model comes from the Taylor series approximation, where an output can be estimated when such data as position, velocity, and acceleration are known. The parameters in the free model can be estimated using the input-output data and a controller can be designed based on the free model. The free model thus developed is shown to be controllable, observable, and robust. The accuracy of the free-model approximation can be improved by increasing the observation window and the order of the free model.   • In the procedure of the hydraulic control system analysis, a linearized approximate equation described by the first order term of Taylor's series has been widely used. Such a linearized equation is effective just near the operating point. In this study, the authors estimate computational errors in the process of applying the existing linearized equation stated above. For evaluating the computational accuracy in practical applications of the linearized equations, dynamic behaviors of hydraulic control systems are investigated through simulations with several kinds of representative hydraulic systems and the linearized equations suggested in this study.

  • This paper presents the effect of boundary condition of failure pressure model for buried pipelines on failure prediction by using a failure probability model. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function is used in order to estimate the probability of failure associated with various corrosion defects for long exposure periods in years. A failure pressure model based on a failure function composed of failure pressure and operation pressure is adopted for the assessment of pipeline failure. The effects of random variables such as defect depth, pipe diameter, defect length, fluid pressure, corrosion rate, material yield stress, material ultimate tensile strength and pipe thickness on the failure probability of the buried pipelines are systematically studied by using a failure probability model for the corrosion pipeline.
