Fertilized eggs of Takifugu pardalis (Temminck et Schlegel) were collected on the coast of Jook-do in Tongyong, Korea, from March 1997 to June 1999, and hatched and reared in the laboratory to investigate osteological development of the larve and juveniles. The newly hatched larvae attained a mean of $3.13{\pm}0.05mm$ in total length (TL). Ossification first began in the parasphenoid, premaxillary and dentary. At 5 days after hatching, the postlarvae attained a mean of $3.82{\pm}0.03mm$ in TL, and their sphenotic, prefrontal, preopercle, opercle, maxillary, and articular were ossified. At 15 days, the postlarvae attained a mean of $7.84{\pm}0.06mm$ in TL, their nasal and posttemporal bones were ossified and the hyoid arch completed ossification. Ossification of all bones was completed in the juveniles (mean = $10.21{\pm}0.06mm$ in TL) at 21 days.

Microstructure of otoliths and early growth in total length of laboratory-reared river puffer, Takrifugu obscurus were observed from 1 to 63 days after hatching. The total length of Takifugu obscurus was 3.09${\pm}$0.02 mm, 4.96${\pm}$0.24 mm, 5.39${\pm}$0.42 mm,9.13${\pm}$0.59 mm, 10.78${\pm}$0.96, 16.40${\pm}$2.31 mm, 30.49${\pm}$l.53 mm in 1, 10, 20, 30, 34, 43, 63 days respectively. The mean radius of otoliths was 14.20${\pm}$1.21 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 1 day, 31.06${\pm}$2.31 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 10 days,57.19${\pm}$6.19 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 20 days,127.13${\pm}$13.13 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 34 days,190.79${\pm}$17.08 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 43 days and 281.85${\pm}$23.81 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in 63 days after hatching. Growth of otoliths were similar to the growth pattern in total length during 20-63 days after hatching. Hatch mark was distinguished with other growth increments and within a hatch mark two or three increments were observed. The number of growth increments was correlated with the days after hatching between 20 and 63 days after hatching.

Toxic effect of landfill leachate on the larvae and juvenile stage of the river puffer fish, Takifugu obscurus, were investigated in order to assess severity of environmental impact of leachate effluent on the general population of estuarine fishes. A short-term toxic experiment was designed to test both laboratory hatched larvae and juveniles (5, 10 and 15 mm in length) and in-situ juveniles (30 and 45 mm in length) using the leachate concentrations between 0 and 16%. Lethal concentrations of 50% mortality ($LC_{50}$) were observed using Spearman-karber Method. 24hr-$LC_{50}$ appeared at the leachate concentrations ranging from 3.03 to 8.57%, 48hr-$LC_{50}$ at 2.73 to 6.21 %, 72hr-$LC_{50}$o at 2.45 to 5.53%, and 96hr-$LC_{50}$ at 2.38 to 4.93%, respectively. Leachate concentrations between 0.69 and 1.51% induced 96hr-$LC_1$. Respiratory frequency was significantly affected even at low leachate concentrations between 0.5 and 1.0% (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the leachate effluents may cause a harmful impact on the physiology of river puffer fish, especially for younger cohorts.
To investigate the influence of density and feeding frequency (food amount) on growth, cannibal dynamics and survival of puffer Takifugu obscurus (TL $25.0{\pm}0.5$ mm, BW $0.53{\pm}0.03$ g) during early life history, we conducted one experiment composed with 6 density groups set up as 1.43 inds./${\ell}$, 2.14 inds./${\ell}$, 2.86 inds./${\ell}$, 3.57 inds./${\ell}$, 4.29 inds./${\ell}$ and 7.14 inds./${\ell}$. The experiment was triplicately performed in 1 ton FRP tank for 30 days. Daily food intake (DFI), feed efficiency (FE), growth, cannibal frequency, and survival rates were examined. Although not find any significant relation of density to DFI and FE, we found that growth decreased significantly with the increasing of density under 3.57 inds./${\ell}$, but significantly increased with the increasing of density over 4.29 inds./${\ell}$. Cannibal frequency and daily mortality rate was significantly increased with increasing density and decreasing feeding frequency, inducing the most poor survival rate in the highest density group and low feeding frequency. Therefore, we concluded that the density and the feeding frequencies affect sibling cannibal dynamics and survival of puffer stock.

Species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay was determined using fish samples collected monthly by a surrounding net from October 2008 to September 2009. A total of 21 species, 582 individuals and 5,345.1 g of fishes were collected during the study period and Perciformes accounted for 47.6 % of the total number of species. Takifugu niphobles, Engraulis japonicus and Lateolabrax japonicus predominated in number, accounting for 55 % of the total number of individuals. Higher number of species and individuals occurred in June and in September-October. Species were grouped into three by cluster analysis: A) dominant species such as Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles, B) fish collected mainly in spring such as Sebastes inermis, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Pholis nebulosa, and Trachyrhamphus serratus, and C) fish collected mainly in autumn such as Engraulis japonicus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Hyporhamphus sajori.
In the present study, we investigated the effects of food and salinity on growth and survival of river puffer, Takifugu obscurus offsprings in indoor land-based tank during the early development. In the food experiment, the river puffer larvae (TL 8.7$\pm$0.1 mm, BW 20.0$\pm$3.2 mg) were fed with tubificid, Limnodrilus gotoi, water flea, Daphnia carinata, mysid, Neomysis awatschensis, Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum and artificial food together Artemia nauplii for 30 days, and the growth and the survival of larvae were investigated. In the salinity experiment, the river puffer larvae and juvenile at three stages (Stage I: TL 5.8$\pm$0.4 mm; Stage II: TL 12.0$\pm$0.2 mm, Stage III: TL 44.5$\pm$0.7 mm) were supplied with Artemia nauplii, water flea and/or artificial food and were reared in 0, 10, 20 and 30 psu at respective stages. The results shows that the growth rates of larvae feeding with artificial food and tubificid together Artemia nauplii were higher than those of larvae in other groups, but the survival rates of larvae feeding with water flea and mysid together Artemia nauplii were higher than those of larvae in other groups. In salinity, the results shows that the growth and survival rates of offsprings were significantly higher in 10∼20 psu than those in 0 and 30 psu at Stage I and n. At Stage III, the growth and the survival rates were the highest in 20 psu, but the lowest in 0 psu. However, it should be noted that the rates in 0 and 30 psu were significantly enhanced at Stage III in comparison with those at Stage I and II. Therefore, it is concluded that river puffer, T. obscurus is euryhaline marine species, which can normally grow and live at salinities from 0 to 30 psu, and that a combinative supplement with Artemia nauplii and water flea, D. carinata may confer an advantage on growth and survival of the river puffer offsprings in indoor land-based tank.
This study investigated external symptoms, behavior characteristics and the distribution pattern of the scuticociliates in the skin, gill and blood vessel of the tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes, infected with scuticociliates among tiger puffer cultured. The fish infected with scuticociliates did not show any external symptoms, such as change in body color or swimming behavior, in the early infection stage. However, they showed congestion, erosion, and ulcer on the skin and fin at advanced stages. They showed a turning movement, mainly stayed on the bottom, and swam with their mouths open at the surface of water. Some fish showed a sudden swimming movement of zigzag type. The scuticociliates were ovoid in shape and $20\times40{\mu}m$ in size. The scuticociliates had a contractile vesicle and a caudal cilium that ranged 10-12 ${\mu}m$, and reproduced by binary fission. Therefore the scuticociliates were identified as ciliated, belonging to class Hymenostomatia, order Scuticociliatida in morphogenetic character. The gills infiltrated with scuticociliates showed clubbed gill filament due to hypertrophy of gill lamella. Within the blood vessels, scuticociliates were observed one to ten individuals, depending on diameter of the blood vessels. Some of the scuticociliates were observed to have ingested erythrocytes.
The influence of starvation on survival, growth and feeding incidence of larval tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes was investigated for 16 days after let them hatched at the temperature of 16.5~18.5${\circ}C$. The effect by delayed initial feeding on larvace was also studied. Almost all larvae began to be fed from the stage of yolk absorption about 5 days after hatching, in which rearing trials revealed that their survival and growth were influenced by food availability. Survival of unfed larvae, which stated to decrease drastically since the oil globule was exhausted about 9 days after hatching, dropped to 50% and 0% respectively on the 11.5th and 16th day. the difference of growth between fed and unfed larvae came into sight on about 5th day after hatching when the initial feeding was started, and had reduced in proportion to the length of starvation period. The condition factors for the unfed larvae were lower than thost of the fed. Of the larvae which had starved less than 5 days, more than 80% could consume food upon feeding. No fish had the ability in having food after 10 days. It appeared that the turning point of recover for the starving larvae came on 7th or 8th day. Their taking-food ability seemed to be affected by the change in swimming activity which depended on the duration of starvation. For the seed production of tiger puffer, therefore, feeding should be initiated as soon as possible, so as to enhance the production and survival of healthy seeds.
As a part for the development of effective mass production techniqne of the puffer, Takifugu rubripes. seedfish, an investigation was carried out in 1989. 1991 and 1992 to determine the optimum starting feeding time of rotifers as a starting food for the fish larvae, and to find out the influences of the light intensitiy and LD cycles on the Artemia consumption by the larvae. The optimum starting time of feeding with rotifer. Brachionus Plicatilis was 2nd to 5th day from hatching resulting in survival of $96.5\~90.0\%$. Optimum light conditions for maximum feeding for fish larvae with Artemia were 1000 lux in 6mm, 600 lux in 8mm, and 200 lux in total length of 10-12 mm larvae. Relationship between total length (X: mm) of fish (6-12 mm in total length) and light intensity (Y: lux) for maximum feeding was:Y=2200-200X (r=-1.000). Relationship between days from hatching (X) and total length (Y: mm) of puffer fry was :Y=1.6427+0.2540X(r=0.9814) for 3 to 36 days after hatching, Y=-33.1452+1.1867X(r= 0.9854) for 36 to 68 days after hatching. Survival rate for 68 days after hatching was $24.1\%$ and the range of water temperature during this period was $21.25\pm1.67^{\circ}C$.
The fish fauna from the Yellow Sea was reviewed based on the published materials from Korea and China. As a results, author confirmed 389 species belonging to 257 genera, 123 families and 27 orders.
