  • As a typical domestic subsea tunnel construction the Gadeok subsea tunnel applying the method of immersed tunnel has been completed and the Boryeong-Taean subsea tunnel is under construction using NATM. The high-speed railway subsea tunnels between the Honam and Jeju are under consideration, and the feasibility of constructing subsea tunnels with Japan and China is also under consideration. However, it is difficult to provide the process plan information for the construction work such as the analysis of the feasibility of the subsea tunnel and the prediction of the proper construction period because there is no case of domestic construction for it applying the shield TBM method. Due to economic and other reasons, government organizations are reluctant to apply the shield TBM, and there is lack of data on the construction process management field using the shield TBM method. Therefore, a standard construction process management system for the subsea tunnel is needed to analyze the feasibility of the subsea tunnel and to predict the proper construction period. By presenting the standard construction process management system of subsea tunnels such as WBS, Network Diagram, and construction period calculation model, I hope to contribute technically and economically to future subsea tunnel projects.

  • In general weed vegetation analysis has been applied to the study of weed population shift. However, it is a limited tool for understanding a problem region and a specific weed species in a certain area. Recently GIS may be used as an important tool to solve this target or to conduct specific field analysis which enables to introduce a reasonable management strategy. Thus, the GIS study was carried out to understand an integrated weed population changes between 1981 and 1992 in Korea. The nationwide weed survey was performed through the whole rice paddy fields in 1981 and 1992. Weed occurrence was totally different over whole country based on these data. In 1981 a region with high weed occurrence was at western and central areas of Korea in terms of weed population density but this was changed into western and southern area in 1992. In both years there were high weed population density at Taean, Seosan county of Chungnam province in Korea. Thus, this particular area may be needed to introduce a special strategy to reduce weed population density and/or to control problem weed species.

  • Physico-chemical characteristics such as width, weight, color and aroma compounds of garlic from 9 different areas were analyzed. Also, antimicrobial activity was tested for their juices. Width of garlic bulb was larger in growing worm-season garlics (Jeju, Namhae, Hapcheon, Hampyeong and Muan) than those of cool-season garlics (Taean, Seosan, Uiseoung) and imported from China. But numbers of nuts were smaller in growing cool-season garlics than others. L color levels of garlics were 80.73~87.40 and a color level have not significantly difference in all samples, b color level was lower in growing Namhae ($20.79{\pm}1.20$) and Muan ($20.91{\pm}1.62$). 25~30 peaks obtained from aroma compounds analysis of various garlics. Among these compounds, 17 kinds of aroma compounds were identified by GC-MS. And, we showed that 15 kinds of compounds were sulfur containing aroma compounds. Diallyl disulfide was contained 34.90~60.54% in various garlic and the highest contents than other compounds in total compounds. It was detected the highest in China garlic but the lowest in growing Muan garlic. All of garlic samples showed antimicrobial activity against Strep. mutans, B. subtilis, E. coli. V. parahaemolyticus, Asp. flavus, and C. albicans. Especially antimicrobial activity was stronger against E. coli, and C. albicans. Antimicrobial activity was enhanced by sample addition volume and the highest in Namhae garlic sample.

  • KIOST-HYU joint acoustics experiment was performed on the western shallow water off the Taean peninsula in the Yellow Sea in May 2013. In this paper, mid-frequency (6~16 kHz) bottom loss data measured in a grazing angle range of $17{\sim}60^{\circ}$ are presented and compared to the predictions obtained using a Rayleigh reflection model. The sediment structure of the experimental site was characterized by multi-layered sediment and the components of the surficial sediment consisted of various types of particles with a mean grain size of $5.9{\phi}$. The model predictions obtained using the mean grain size were not in agreement with the measured bottom loss, and those obtained using the grain size of $4{\phi}$, which was estimated by an inversion process, showed a best fit to the measurements. It would be because the standard deviation of the gain-size distribution of surficial sediment is $4.3{\phi}$, which is much larger than those of other areas around the experimental site. Finally, the model predictions obtained using the geoacoustic parameters estimated from the inversion process for the surficial sediment layer and those corresponding to the mean grain size of $1.3{\phi}$ for lower layer are reasonably agreement with the measured bottom loss data.

  • This paper presents an overview of the geological environment investigation and underwater acoustic measurements for the purpose of "Study on the Relationship between the Geological Environment and Acoustic Propagation in Shallow Water", which are jointly carried out by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology) and Hanyang University in the western shallow water off the Taean peninsula in the Yellow Sea in April-May 2013. The experimental site was made up of various sediment types and bedforms due to the strong tidal currents and coastal geomorphological characteristics. The geological characteristics of the study area were intensively investigated using multi-beam echo sounder, sub-bottom profiler, sparker system and grab sampler. Acoustic measurements with a wide range of research topics in a frequency range of 20~16,000 Hz: 1) low frequency sound propagation, 2) mid-frequency bottom loss, 3) spatial coherence analysis of ambient noise, and 4) mid- frequency bottom backscattering were performed using low- and mid-frequency sound sources and vertical line array. This paper summarizes the topics that motivated the experiment, methodologies of the acoustic measurements, and acoustic data analysis based on the measured geological characteristics, and describes summary results of the geological, meteorological, and oceanographic conditions found during the experiments.

  • After the juvenile octopus individuals being discharged, it is hard to separately capture them because they attach strongly to the wall of the aquarium by the suckers on the arms. Therefore, anaesthetics (MS-222 or lidocaine-HCl) are usually used for capture from attachment. The anaesthetized time of the octopus by lidocaine-HCl was more faster 1.6 to 4.5 times under 200 ppm and 6.0 to 6.5 times in 300 to 500 ppm than those in MS-222. In the anaesthetized and recovery rates (%) by the exposed time, the juvenile octopuses were anesthetized by lower concentrations of lidocaine-HCl within the short time, and rapidly recovered from anesthesia. In the secondary anesthesia of the juvenile octopuses exposed with lidocaine-HCl by the elapsed time after the primary anesthesia, the anesthetized time was later in case of lower concentrations and long elapsed times, However, the anesthetized time was faster when their concentrations were higher and the elapsed time after anesthesia were shorter. Recovery from the secondary anesthesia was faster when the elapsed time was long in lower concentration, and was later when the elapsed time was shorter. In case of Octopus ocellatus, anaesthetic effects by lidocaine-HCl concentrations were better than those of MS-222. Doses of lidocaine-HCl and critical time for works at the indoor laboratory were proper in concentration of 100 ppm within 15 min.

  • The ecophysiological characteristics of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in Taean area, west coast of Korea, were investigated after main spawning season from September 2011 to January 2012 to confirm the recovery process of condition. The cupped oysters, from 4 different off-bottom culture areas were compared the gonad indices, histological analysis combined with measurement of RNA/DNA contents and ratios in gonad of each sex were undertaken. To evaluate the health condition of oyster after spawning, the RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle, fatness and condition index (CI) were used. The results showed that cupped oysters cultured in Uihang coastal area were different physiological aspects than other experiment areas, namely continuously decreasing RNA/DNA content and ratio in adductor muscle, lowest CI and fatness. Oysters cultured in Iwon Station 1 and 2 showed fast recovery in RNA/DNA, increase in fatness and CI during post-spawning stage until October rapidly and there after it decreased. Oysters in Shinduri showed rapidly decrease in fatness and CI until October. On the contrary to this factors, RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle increased as like protein until October. Partially spawning season could be observed until December in Shinduri and Iwon Station 1.

  • The objective of this study was to select a representative coastal disaster prevention forest type for each coastal area. In this study, we used cluster analysis with the results obtained from investigation for density of growing stock, tree height, DBH, and forest width and length of major coastal disaster prevention forests distributed in the west, the south, and the east coasts. The results showed that the coastal disaster prevention forests for each coast were classified into two types: a forest type with small DBH and high growing stock density (W1) or with high tree height (W2) in the west coast, a forest type with small tree height (S1) or with large DBH (S2) in the south coast, and a forest type with small growing stock density (E1) or with small tree height and low DBH (E2) in the east coast. The coastal disaster prevention forests located in Gurye beach (Hwangchon-ri, Wonbuk-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do) and in Gohsapo beach (Unsna-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do) were selected as the representative forests of W1 and W2, respectively. In addition, the coastal disaster prevention forests located in Namyang beach (Namyang-ri, Seolcheon-myeon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do) and in Donggo beach (Donggo-ri, Sinji-myeon, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do) were selected as the representative forests of S1 and S2, respectively. Last, the coastal disaster prevention forests located in Bonggil beach (Bonggil-ri, Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do) and in Anmeok beach (Gyeonso-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do) were selected as the representative forests of E1 and E2, respectively. Our finding is expected to be used as baseline data in establishing the most appropriate coastal disaster prevention forest for each coast.

  • To know the infection status of zoonotic trematode metacercariae in brackish water fish, we surveyed mullets collected from 18 coastal areas in the Republic of Korea. The metacercariae of Pygidiopsis summa were detected in 236 (68.2%) out of 346 mullets examined. They were found in mullets from 15 areas except for those from Boseong-gun (Jeollanam-do), Pohang-si, and Uljin-gun (Gyeongsangbuk-do). Especially in mullets from Taean-gun (Chungcheongnam-do) and Geoje-si (Gyeongsangnam-do), their prevalences were 100% and 95.5%, and the average metacercarial density was more than 1,000 per fish. They were also detected in mullets from 3 coastal lakes, Gyeongpoho, Songjiho, and Hwajinpoho, in Gangwon-do, and their average densities were 419, 147, and 672 per infected fish, respectively. The metacercariae of 5 other heterophyid species, including Heterophyes nocens, Heterophyopsis continua, Metagonimus sp., Stictodora fuscata, and Stictodora lari, were found in the mullets examined. The metacercariae of H. nocens were detected in 66.7, 100, 28.6, 81.6, 3.9, 61.5, and 27.3% of mullets from Muan-gun, Shinan-gun, Haenam-gun, Gangjin-gun, and Boseong-gun (Jeollanam-do), Hadong-gun, and Geoje-si (Gyeongsangnam-do), and their metacercarial intensities were 64, 84, 119, 99, 1, 24, and 24 per fish infected, respectively. From the above results, it has been confirmed that P. summa metacercariae are heavily infected in mullets from coastal areas of Korea. It is suggested that residents who frequently consume raw mullet dish can be easily infected with heterophyid flukes.

  • The transport of suspended matter was interpreted in the coastal zone off Taean Peninsula during the summer (June) in 1996. Coastal waters were homogenous in water temperature and salinity, whereas offshore waters were characterzed by the strong thermocline. Mixing between coastal and offshore waters are negligeable, largely lessened, due to the existence of strong tidal front between the two water masses. In the offshore area, less saline coastal waters from the Kyunggi Bay are considered to be transported southward along the mid-depth layer of thermocline. Concentration of suspended matters was higher than 5 mg/l in the northern coastal area near the Kyunggi Bay, but generally less than 2 mg/l in the offshore area. Less saline waters along the mid-depth layer in the offshore area sustain maximum turbidities throughout the water column. Therefore suspended matters supplied from the coastal area of Kyunggi Bay are considered to be transported southward by the advective movement of less saline coastal waters. Mean particle size of the suspended matters shows 2~9 ${\mu}m$. Coarse grains (mean size larger than 7 ${\mu}m$) are predominant in the less saline coastal waters extending to the offshore mid-depth waters. Such size distributions of suspended matters together with the characteristics of water masses are considered to be an indicator for the southward movement of suspended matters derived from Kyunggi Bay.
