  • The new multi-dimensional higher order interpolation scheme called MHIS is developed. Firstly, multi-dimensional TVD condition is derived based on one-dimensional TVD condition. Using multi-dimensional TVD condition, 2nd, 3rd and 5th order MHIS are presented. By help of multi-dimensional TVD condition, it is possible to captured a discontinuity monotonically even in a multi-dimensional flow. It is verified through several test cases that the accuracy and the robustness of MHIS are enhanced in regions of shock discontinuities as well as boundary-layers.

  • A transcritical flow occurs when the width and slope of a channel are varying abruptly. In this study, the transcritical flow in a two-dimensional open channel is analyzed by using the shallow-water equations. A weighted average flux scheme that has flux limiter with a total variation diminishing condition is introduced for a second-order accuracy in time and space, and non- spurious oscillations at discontinuous points. A HLLC method with three wane speeds is employed to calculate the Riemann problem. To overcome difficulties resulting from variation of channel sections in a two-dimensional analysis of transcritical flow, the numerical model is developed based on a generalized grid system.

  • A new treatment of cell-interface flux in AUSM-type methods is introduced to reduce the numerical dissipation. Through analysis of TVD limiters, a criterion for the more accurate prediction of cell-interface state is found out and M-AUSMPW+ is developed by determining the transferred property newly and appropriately within the criterion. The superiority of M-AUSMPW+ is clearly revealed in multi-dimensional flow problems. It can eliminate numerical dissipation effectively in a non-flow aligned grid system. As a result, M-AUSMPW+ is shown to be much more accurate and effective than other previous schemes in multi-dimensional problems. Through a stationary contact discontinuity, a vortex flow, a shock wave/boundary layer interactions and viscous shock tube problems, it is verified that accuracy of M-AUSMPW+ is improved.

  • This study established a numerical model capable of calculating the wave overtopping rate of coastal structures by nonlinear irregular waves using the FUNWAVE-TVD model, a fully nonlinear Boussinesq equation model. Here, a numerical model was established by coding the mean value approach equations of EurOtop (2018) and empirical formula by Goda (2009), and adding them as subroutines of the FUNWAVE-TVD model. The verification of the model was performed by numerically calculating the wave overtopping rate of nonlinear irregular waves on vertical wall structures and comparing them with the experimental results presented in EurOtop (2018). As a result of the verification, the numerical calculation result according to the EurOtop equation of this model was very well matched with the experimental result in all relative freeboard (Rc/Hmo) range under non-impulsive wave conditions, and the numerical calculation result of empirical formula was evaluated slightly smaller than the experimental result in Rc/Hmo < 0.8 and slightly larger than the experimental result in Rc/Hmo > 0.8. The results of this model were well represented in both the exponential curve and the power curve under impulsive wave conditions. Therefore, it was confirmed that this numerical model can simulate the wave overtopping rate caused by nonlinear irregular waves in an vertical wall structure.

  • Present study examines the numerical issues of cell structure simulation for various regimes of detonation phenomena ranging from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonations. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations with $variable-{\gamma} $ formulation and one-step Arrhenius reaction model are solved by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and 4th order accurate Runge-Kutta time integration scheme. A series of numerical studies are carried out for the different regimes of the detonation phenomena to investigate the computational requirements for the simulation of the detonation wave cell structure by varying the reaction constants and grid resolutions. The computational results are investigated by comparing the solution of steady ZND structure to draw out the minimum grid resolutions and the size of the computational domain for the capturing cell structures of the different regimes of the detonation phenomena.

  • This paper presents a vorticity-based numerical method for analyzing an incompressible Newtonian viscous flow around an impulsively started cylinder. The Navier-Stockes equations have a natural Helmholtz decomposition. The vorticity transport equation and the pressure equation are derived from this decoupled form. The associated boundary conditions are dynamic for the vorticity and pressure variables representing the coupling relation between them and the force balance on the wall. The various numerical treatments for solving the governing equations are introduced. According to Wu et al.(1994), the boundary conditions are decoupled, keeping the dynamic relation between vorticity and pressure. The vorticity transport equation is formulated by FVM and TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) scheme is used for the convection term. An integral approach similar to the panel method is used to obtain the velocity field for a given vorticity field and the pressure field, instead of the conventional differential approaches. In the numerical process, the structured grid is generated. The results are compared to existing numerical and analytic results for the validity of the present method.

  • In present work, we study the hydrogen storage of MWNT decorated with bimetallic Pt and Pd nanosize catalysts by Thermal Vapor Deposition [TVD]. The size of Pt and Pd particles is controlled as 5nm, 3nm, respectively by TVD. Before hydrogen storage measurement, the sample was heated for 1hr at $200^{\circ}C$ in H2 atmosphere. The Hydrogen sto rage of the sample was performed at room temperature and 33~34atm. The hydrogen storage of this composite showed 3.2wt% at 298K and 34atm, for three times. At 4th cycle, hydrogen storage is decreased to 1.5wt%, owing to the aggregation of bimetallic Pt and Pd nano particles.

  • Though the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has been developed and applied to shallow water equations mainly in explicit schemes, they have been criticized for the limitation in treatment of bottom friction terms and severe CFL conditions. In this study, an implicit scheme is devised and applied to some representative benchmark problems. The linear triangular elements were employed and the Roe numerical fluxes were adopted for convective fluxes. To preserve TVD property, the slope limiter was employed. As the case studies, the model is applied to the flow around the cylinders and the dam-break flow. Then, the results are compared with the experimental and numerical data of previous studies and good agreements were observed.

  • This study presents numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for supersonic unsteady flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle with a isolator. The TVD scheme in generalized coordinates is employed in order to calculate the moving shock waves caused by thermal choking. We discuss on transient characteristics, unstart phenomena, fluctuations of specific thrust caused by thermal choking and effects of isolator. The adverse pressure gradient caused by heat addition brings about separation of the wall boundary layers and formation of the oblique shock wave that proceed to upstream. The proceeding speed of the oblique shock wave to upstream direction for the convergent-divergent nozzle with isolator is lower than that for the nozzle without isolator.

  • In this study, a time-dependent aspect of an embankment failure is considered to simulate a flood inundation map and calculate overtopping discharge induced by an embankment failure. A numerical model has been developed by solving the two dimensional nonlinear shallow water equations with a finite volume method on unstructured grids. To analyze a Riemann problem, the HLLC approximate Riemann solver and the Weighted Averaged Flux method are employed by using a TVD limiter and the source term treatment is also employed by using the operator splitting method. Firstly, the numerical model is applied to a dam break problem and a sloping seawall. Obtained numerical results show good agreements with experimental data. Secondly, the model is applied to a flow induced by an embankment failure by assuming that the width and elevation of embankment are varied with time-dependent functions. As a result of the comparison with each numerical overtopping discharge, established flood inundation discharges in the previous studies are overestimated than the result of the present numerical model.
